Deuterium can be extracted from water; tritium is scarce and radioactive, so a power plant would need to breed it from lithium and recycle fuel that does not fuse. Deuterium–helium-3 and proton–boron-11 are also proposed, but they demand more difficult plasma conditions and have their own supply challenges.
Why deuterium–tritium is the leading fuel
Deuterium and tritium are two isotopes of hydrogen. A deuterium atom has one proton and one neutron; a tritium atom has one proton and two neutrons. When they fuse, they produce helium and an energetic neutron.

D-T is the leading practical fuel pathway in current fusion research because it reaches fusion conditions at lower temperatures than other candidate fuels, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). ITER, the international fusion experiment, also plans to use D-T in future operations.
Where D-T fuel comes from
Deuterium: extracted from water
Deuterium occurs naturally in water and can be distilled from different forms of it. The DOE says seawater contains about one deuterium atom for every 6,500 hydrogen atoms. ITER gives an illustrative figure of 33 grams of deuterium per cubic metre of seawater. These figures describe natural abundance, not the amount a particular plant can extract economically.

Tritium: scarce, radioactive, and short-lived
Tritium exists in trace quantities in nature and is also produced as a by-product in some fission reactors, including heavy-water CANDU-type reactors. Existing production is limited relative to the needs expected for a commercial fusion fleet. Tritium’s half-life is about 12 years, so stored inventories decrease over time as it decays.
That makes tritium the main fuel-supply bottleneck for D-T fusion. A plant would need an initial supply, then reliable systems to produce, recover, and reuse tritium.

How a D-T plant could make more tritium
The intended approach is to surround the plasma vessel with a lithium-containing blanket. Fusion releases energetic neutrons; when those neutrons interact with lithium in the blanket, they can produce tritium. The plant would then extract that tritium and return it to the fuel cycle. The DOE identifies lithium-6-enriched material as important to breeding.

ITER is testing blanket concepts, but that work is not proof that a commercial plant can already breed all the tritium it needs. The quantities and enrichment levels needed for deployment still require further research and development, and commercial closed-cycle performance has not been established.

Figures about lithium supply need careful interpretation. The DOE reports USGS 2023 estimates of up to 98 million tons of identified lithium resources and 26 million tons of reserves; those totals are not estimates of fusion-ready lithium-6. Lithium-6 makes up about 7.5% of natural lithium, according to the DOE. These figures alone do not establish how much suitable material a fusion fleet could obtain or use.
Why fusion plants recycle fuel
Not every fuel particle fuses during its passage through the plasma. ITER describes pumping out unconsumed fuel along with helium ash and impurities, processing the mixture in a tritium plant, separating usable isotopes, and reinjecting the fuel. This recovery system would work alongside tritium breeding; breeding and recycling are different parts of the fuel cycle.

The DOE estimates that the fusion energy released by one gram of D-T fuel is equivalent to the energy released by about 2,400 gallons of oil. That is a comparison of fuel energy released, not net electricity delivered by a power plant or a measure of plant efficiency.

Other proposed fusion fuels
| Fuel combination | Fuel source | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Deuterium–tritium (D-T) | Deuterium from water; tritium from limited existing supplies and, in a planned power plant, breeding from lithium | Most favorable fusion conditions among these options, but tritium supply, breeding, and fuel recycling are major engineering needs |
| Deuterium–helium-3 (D–3He) | Deuterium from water; a sustainable helium-3 supply would also be required | Requires higher ion temperatures than D-T; it is a proposed pathway, not an established commercial alternative |
| Proton–boron-11 (p–11B) | Protons and boron-11 | Requires higher ion temperatures than D-T; describing it as “aneutronic” does not mean the full reactor cycle is free of engineering challenges |
The DOE and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) describe higher temperature requirements for alternatives such as D–3He and p–11B. Those fuels change the trade-offs; they are not established as easier commercial routes. The IAEA’s tritium-breeding overview discusses breeding as part of the fuel-cycle challenge.

What the fuel question means for future plants
- D-T is the leading near-term fuel choice because it can fuse under less demanding conditions than the alternatives covered here.
- Deuterium is abundant in water, but still has to be extracted and processed.
- Tritium is not an abundant natural resource. Planned plants depend on making it from lithium, recovering unused fuel, and managing radioactive inventories.
- Breeding remains an engineering goal under test, not a commercially proven guarantee of self-sufficient fuel supply.
- Alternative fuels shift the challenge toward higher plasma temperatures and, in the case of D–3He, a sustainable helium-3 supply.
ITER’s pages on tritium breeding, fuel recovery and fuelling, and its fuel-supply FAQ describe the systems and open questions behind the D-T pathway.
