What Frequency Will 6G Use? Candidate Bands and the ITU Timeline

There is no single finalized worldwide frequency for 6G. The ITU is studying additional IMT bands for WRC-27 while existing mobile spectrum remains relevant.

There is no single finalized worldwide frequency for 6G as of October 2026. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) calls the next generation IMT-2030; existing bands identified for mobile communications remain relevant, while several additional ranges are being studied for possible consideration at the 2027 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-27). Those candidate ranges are not final 6G allocations.

What does “6G frequency” mean?

6G is the common name for the next generation of mobile communications. In ITU materials, it is called IMT-2030. Rather than assigning the generation one worldwide frequency, regulators and standards bodies work through spectrum identification and technical standards. The ITU says frequency bands already identified for IMT remain relevant to IMT-2030; it is also studying possible additional bands.

A band described as a “candidate” or “under study” is being evaluated for possible regulatory identification. That status does not guarantee that the range will be adopted, used by every country, or supported by 6G devices. The ITU identifies WRC-27 as the decision point for the additional ranges currently under study.

Which frequencies are being considered for possible additional IMT identification?

The ITU’s FAQ, updated 30 September 2024, lists the following ranges for study under WRC-27 agenda item 1.7. Regional scope matters: the ranges are not uniformly proposed for every ITU region.

  • Application: wireless network router, PCIe network card, notebook PC desktop computer external USB network adapter, WLAN AP & Hotspot wireless range extender, security IP cameras
  • Support Wi-Fi 6E: the new 6 GHz band can bring more bandwidth, faster speeds, lower latency and less interference; perfect for online gaming and streaming 4K/8K video
  • Improve Signal Reception: Enhance the speed and stability of your Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connection, ensuring no network drops even when using multiple devices simultaneously
  • Long Cable & Magnetic Base: With 6.5ft cords, you can position the antenna in a better signal spot, while the strong built-in magnet securely attaches the base to any steel surface
Frequency range Regional scope listed by ITU Status
4.4–4.8 GHz Regions 1 and 3 Under study for possible additional IMT identification at WRC-27
7.125–8.4 GHz Regions 2 and 3; in Region 1, only 7.125–7.25 GHz and 7.75–8.4 GHz Under study for possible additional IMT identification at WRC-27
14.8–15.35 GHz Global, as listed in the FAQ Under study for possible additional IMT identification at WRC-27

These ranges and regional scopes are from the ITU-R FAQ on International Mobile Telecommunications. The ITU says the studies are to be submitted for decision to WRC-27, and its IMT-2030 overview describes the conference’s consideration as dependent on studies of sharing and compatibility with existing services.

Has the 6G frequency plan been finalized?

No. The three ranges above remain under study, not final assignments to 6G. WRC-27 is expected to consider the studies and decide whether to make additional IMT identifications. Even a future IMT identification would not, by itself, establish that every country will use the spectrum or that a particular 6G phone will support it.

It is therefore too early to state that 6G will use only one of these ranges—or to treat a proposed frequency as a confirmed worldwide 6G band. The ITU materials do not establish which range, if any, will be used for a specific service, device, or national deployment.

Where does 6G standardization stand?

Spectrum discussions are only one part of defining a new mobile generation. In 2026, the ITU’s Working Party 5D completed draft IMT-2030 technical performance requirements in February and evaluation guidelines in June. Both were sent to Study Group 5 for approval at its December 2026 meeting, according to the ITU’s IMT-family process page.

In a 17 March 2026 update, the ITU reported that experts had agreed on the performance requirements and said formal approval was expected after the parent study group met in December. These are performance and evaluation milestones, not a finalized frequency plan. The ITU’s update is titled “IMT-2030: Technical requirements for the 6G future.”

What should readers expect next?

  • WRC-27 is the conference identified by the ITU materials for decisions on the additional ranges under study.
  • The regions listed for each candidate range differ, so a decision would not automatically mean the same spectrum is available everywhere.
  • The standards and regulatory process does not yet establish a particular 6G phone’s supported bands, launch date, speed, coverage, or country-level deployment.
