A forward-deployed engineer (FDE) works close to a customer or operational team to understand a real workflow problem, build or integrate a technical solution, and help get it into use. The job can extend from discovery and design through coding, evaluation, production deployment, adoption, and handoff. It differs most clearly from roles focused mainly on advice or architecture—but titles and duties overlap, so the job description’s ownership boundaries matter more than the label.
What does a forward-deployed engineer do?
An FDE connects customer needs to hands-on engineering. Rather than stopping at a recommendation or design, the role may involve working with users to map a workflow, understanding technical and operational constraints, building or changing software, integrating systems, evaluating the result, and supporting its path into production.

The work often happens in close contact with the customer’s technical teams and users. FDEs may also carry what they learn back to their employer’s product and engineering teams, especially when the same problem recurs across deployments and could be addressed with a reusable product improvement.

The exact lifecycle depends on the employer and engagement. OpenAI’s healthcare FDE posting describes responsibility spanning customer discovery and workflow scoping, architecture, hands-on implementation, evaluation, production deployment, adoption, and handoff. It says that role owns the technical solution, while ownership of the commercial or executive relationship is not required. That is one healthcare role’s design, not a universal requirement for FDEs. Customer work can feed product work
Customer-specific delivery can reveal needs that are not unique to one customer. Accenture’s FDE posting describes engineers embedding in accounts, delivering production-grade solutions, owning outcomes, and bringing field learning back into the broader practice. The potential product loop is an important part of the role, but whether an FDE directly influences a product roadmap depends on the organization. Accenture’s FDE posting
How FDEs differ from consultants and solution architects
There is no universal boundary between these job titles. Consulting can include implementation, and a solution architect may stay involved well beyond design. A useful comparison is what the person is expected to own: code, technical decisions, production delivery, acceptance, and operation after release.

| Role | Typical center of work | Implementation and endpoint | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward-deployed engineer | Customer-close technical discovery and delivery | FDE postings reviewed include hands-on implementation; responsibility can extend through evaluation, production rollout, adoption, and handoff. | Which code and systems the engineer owns, and whether responsibility includes deployment and post-release work. |
| Consultant | An advisory or delivery engagement, with scope shaped by the assignment | May advise, implement, or lead delivery; the engagement defines the endpoint. | Whether the consultant is accountable for implementation or primarily for recommendations and other defined deliverables. |
| Solution architect | Technical design and alignment of a solution | May design integrations and guide implementation; involvement in production code and operations varies. | Whether the architect writes or owns production code, and who takes over at operational handoff. |
These are patterns, not fixed occupational definitions. Wipro’s September 30, 2026 posting for work with UnitedHealth Group business teams describes an FDE role as blending hands-on engineering, solution architecture, product thinking, consulting, and customer-facing execution. It also calls for building solutions and contributing to repositories—an example of overlapping labels alongside implementation responsibility. Wipro’s posting
How to evaluate an FDE job description
Look for concrete deliverables and decision rights, not just the title. These questions can reveal whether a role is hands-on engineering, architecture, advisory work, presales, account management, or some combination:
- What software or systems will I personally build, change, and review?
- How much time will I spend with users and customer technical teams?
- Who defines scope, accepts changes, and makes technical decisions?
- Does the work end at a prototype, or continue through evaluation, production deployment, adoption, and handoff?
- Who operates the solution after release, and who handles incidents or ongoing maintenance?
- Are customer-specific changes expected to become reusable product capabilities?
- Is the role primarily technical delivery, or does it center on presales, advice, account management, or project coordination?
FDEOps likewise recommends asking what you will build, how much time you will spend with customers, and who operates the result after release. FDEOps’ role guide

Employer descriptions help show the range, but each reflects one company’s framing rather than a labor-market standard. Cognizant describes client-embedded FDE work as building, customizing, and deploying software or AI in a customer environment, including integrations and collaboration with users. Cognizant’s FDE glossary
Across these descriptions, the practical through-line is proximity to the customer combined with technical delivery. The balance among coding, design, consulting, product feedback, and operational ownership varies; the job’s actual scope is more informative than the title alone.
