It can also destroy data on that volume, so check the selected drive and back up anything you need before formatting. In everyday speech people say “disk,” but Windows’ formatting operation generally applies to a volume or partition—not a physical, low-level disk procedure.
What does formatting a disk mean?
A volume is a usable storage area Windows can address with a drive letter, such as D:. Formatting creates a file system—the structure Windows uses to organize files and folders—on that volume. Microsoft’s format command documentation describes creating a new file system and root directory. Depending on the options used, the command can also check for bad areas.

Formatting is not the same as physically repairing or rebuilding a disk. It changes how Windows organizes a selected volume, and formatting an existing volume can make its previous files inaccessible.
Will formatting delete everything?
Assume that formatting an existing volume will destroy the data you wanted to keep. Microsoft Support warns, “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” Back up needed files and verify the drive before confirming. The warning and Disk Management steps are in Microsoft’s Disk Management in Windows guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Formatting should not be treated as a guarantee that data has been securely erased. A quick format, in particular, does not fully overwrite or erase the volume.
Quick format and full format
Microsoft Support says that the quick-format option creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume. In the command-line documentation, /Q removes the file table and root directory from a previously formatted volume and skips a sector-by-sector scan for bad areas. Microsoft says to use it only for a previously formatted volume known to be in good condition.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

So, quick format is faster, but it is not secure erasure. Do not infer more about what a “full” format does than the applicable Windows documentation states; the key distinction established here is that quick format does not fully overwrite the volume.

- Back up files you need, then confirm the target volume by its drive letter, label, and capacity. Formatting the wrong volume can destroy the data on it.
- Open Disk Management. In Windows 10 or 11, you can right-click the Start button and choose Disk Management.
- In the lower pane, right-click the intended volume and choose Format.
- Choose the available formatting options, then confirm only after checking the selected volume again. Formatting destroys data on that partition.
For a new disk that appears as unallocated space, Disk Management’s workflow is to create a new simple volume and choose whether to format it during setup. The ordinary in-Windows workflow cannot format a disk or partition that is currently in use, including the partition containing Windows.

Which file system should you choose?
There is no universal choice for every drive. The right file system depends on the device and which computers or devices need to read it. Microsoft’s format command reference lists FAT, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, ReFS, and UDF as options. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance gives FAT or exFAT as examples for SD cards and flash or USB drives, and NTFS for computers and external hard drives. These are examples, not universal compatibility rules; check the requirements of the devices that will use the volume.
Can you format the Windows drive while using Windows?
No. Disk Management cannot format a disk or partition that is currently in use, including the partition containing Windows. If your aim is to prepare another volume, make sure it is the intended one rather than the system partition.

What to do if you formatted the wrong volume
If you need files from a volume that was formatted by mistake, stop writing new data to it and do not format it again. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance describes an extensive mode for files on NTFS after formatting and lists extensive mode for FAT and exFAT. Recovery is not guaranteed; follow Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery instructions for the relevant file system.

Command-line formatting is for careful, targeted use
Windows also provides the format command and DiskPart. The DiskPart documentation explains that the tool works by selecting a disk, partition, or volume before applying operations. Because selecting the wrong target can be destructive, beginners should use Disk Management rather than copying command-line instructions without first verifying the target and understanding each command.
