Fruit and vegetable scraps are accepted by most compost pickup programs. Many also take meat, fish, bones, dairy, eggs, grains, bread, pasta, coffee grounds and leftovers—but local rules vary, especially for raw meat, tea bags, food-soiled paper, liners and compostable packaging. Check the accepted-items list for your specific city, building or hauler before adding anything uncertain.
Commonly accepted food scraps
Municipal programs commonly accept the following food waste, though no single list applies everywhere:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Fruit and vegetable scraps, peels, pits and spoiled produce.
- Meat, poultry, fish, shellfish and bones, where the program allows them.
- Dairy products, eggs and eggshells, where listed.
- Bread, baked goods, pasta, rice, beans, cereal, nuts and seeds.
- Leftovers and plate scrapings, if prepared food is accepted.
- Coffee grounds and, often, paper coffee filters.
For example, Portland’s curbside guide includes meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs, dairy, grains, nuts, seeds, produce, bones, coffee grounds and raw or cooked leftovers. Minneapolis’ accepted-organics list includes fruits and vegetables, meat, fish and bones, dairy, eggs, pasta, beans, rice, bread, cereal, nuts and shells.

Raw meat, bones and leftovers
Acceptance can depend on the collection service, not just the type of material. Milwaukee’s food-scrap drop-off accepts cooked meat and animal or fish bones but excludes raw meat. By contrast, Portland’s curbside list includes raw and cooked leftovers. Follow the rules for your own pickup or drop-off site rather than assuming that another city’s list applies.
#1 Best Overall
- ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
- ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
- ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
- ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
- ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.
Milwaukee’s food-waste guidance also excludes liquids, cooking oil and grease, yard waste, food packaging, and compostable utensils or takeout containers.
Tea bags
Tea bags are a good example of a local-rule difference: Portland and Nashville list them as accepted, while Milwaukee excludes them. Check your provider’s list before putting tea bags in the bin.

- Twin chambers: Two separate chambers allow one side to finish composting while leaving the other side available to add fresh wastes; Constant alternation of the two sides will create an uninterrupted stream of nutritious compost
- 360⁰ Tumbling Design: The rotating design prevents you from digging or mixing the pile by hand; And the deep fins on eight panels make it easier to turn the compost bin
- Excellent Aeration: Air vents can make the air fully circulate and will not cause an explosion due to excessive internal pressure; Deep fins can better break the clumps, which is conducive to the full fermentation of oxygen
- Sturdy & Durable Construction: Constructed of premium metal frame and high-quality pp plastic body, this tumbling composter is corrosion-resistant, weathering-resistant, sturdy, and durable for long-lasting service life
- Garden Gloves Included: The gloves that not only protect your hands from injury, but are also waterproof, making them easy to clean; With 4 durable ABS plastic claws for easy digging, planting and other gardening work
Food-soiled paper, liners and compostable products
Paper and products labeled “compostable” are not automatically accepted. Minneapolis accepts specified food-soiled paper and compostable products bearing the BPI logo. Portland allows paper, paper bags or BPI-certified compostable liners in its residential program. Vancouver says not to use plastic bags, including bags labeled biodegradable or compostable. A label alone does not show that a local collection program or its processor accepts an item.

What to keep out
Unless your local guide explicitly permits a specific item, keep conventional plastic, wrappers, metal, foil and glass out of the food-scrap bin. Other common exclusions include liquids, grease or cooking oil, expanded foam, food packaging, and animal or human waste. Some services also exclude yard waste or compostable food-service items.
For examples of exclusions, consult Milwaukee’s guide, Fairfax County’s organics guidance and Nashville’s drop-off composting list.

How to check your pickup bin’s rules
- Find the accepted-items list for your exact city, building or hauler; curbside pickup and drop-off services may have different rules.
- Check specifically for raw meat and bones, tea bags, food-soiled paper, liners and certified compostable products.
- Review the exclusions before adding packaging, liquids, grease or yard material.
- If the guide does not clearly accept an item, leave it out or ask the service provider.
A food-scrap pickup program is not necessarily the same as backyard composting or a yard-waste collection program. If you gather scraps in a countertop pail before taking them to a cart, check the local liner rules for that collection service.
