One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFirmware is software and associated data stored in a hardware device to help initialize it, control its functions, or provide an interface for its operation. It can be part of a computer’s platform or belong to a specific component, such as a router. Firmware is often updateable, but how it is stored and updated depends on the device.
What firmware means
Firmware is code and data associated with hardware and used to make that hardware work. One definition recorded in the NIST Glossary describes programs and data stored in hardware—typically ROM or PROM—that cannot be dynamically modified while they are running. That is one context-specific definition, not a rule that all firmware is permanently unchangeable.

In many consumer devices, firmware is kept in nonvolatile storage and can be replaced through a controlled update process. NETGEAR, for example, describes firmware as software placed semi-permanently in hardware and uses a router as an example in its firmware glossary explanation. The practical distinction is that firmware is closely tied to a device’s operation; its exact scope and updateability vary by implementation.
What firmware does
Firmware handles functions close to the hardware. It may initialize components, control device-specific behavior, or provide services that other software relies on. A computer can have platform firmware that supports starting the system, while a router can use its own firmware to control network functions. A complex product may include multiple components, each with its own firmware and update route.

Platform firmware in a computer
Platform or system firmware serves the computer as a whole. In a PC, it helps initialize hardware and supports the boot process that starts an operating system. Microsoft describes UEFI firmware as initializing hardware and booting an operating system in its Azure firmware overview.
Firmware for a device or component
Device firmware controls a particular device or component. A router’s firmware, for instance, can implement functions such as filtering network traffic. Microsoft distinguishes device firmware from system firmware: device firmware is tied to a specific device and typically works alongside a driver, whereas system firmware provides critical boot and runtime services to the system as a whole. See Microsoft’s explanation of device firmware.

Firmware vs. BIOS, UEFI, drivers, and applications
| Term | What it is | How it relates to firmware |
|---|---|---|
| Firmware | Code and data associated with hardware and used in its operation. | The broad category; it can serve a whole platform or a particular device, and its updateability varies. |
| BIOS | In the cited ACPI terminology, traditional BIOS specifically means x86 BIOS. | It is not a universal synonym for all firmware. The ACPI terminology distinguishes traditional BIOS from UEFI Core System BIOS. ACPI specification terminology. |
| UEFI | A specification describing the interface between an operating system and platform firmware. | It defines structures and boot and runtime services; it is not the firmware image installed on a particular computer. UEFI Specification 2.9A. |
| Driver | Operating-system software that communicates with or exposes a device to the OS. | A driver can work with device firmware, but it is separate software with a different role. Microsoft’s device firmware overview. |
| Application | Higher-level software used for tasks such as browsing, writing, or editing. | It is not synonymous with firmware. The boundary between firmware and embedded software can depend on the device. |
What UEFI firmware is
UEFI is often mentioned alongside firmware because it standardizes how an operating system interacts with platform firmware. The UEFI Specification 2.9A describes an interface between the operating system and platform firmware, including data tables and boot and runtime services. The goal is to provide a standard environment for booting an operating system across different platform designs.

BIOS, by contrast, should not be used as a blanket name for every kind of firmware.

Why firmware updates are released
An update can change a device’s behavior after it has shipped. Microsoft’s Component Firmware Update (CFU) Protocol Specification lists fixing functional or security issues and adding features as possible reasons for an update. Not every update does all of these things, and an update notice for a specific model is the best guide to what a particular release changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How firmware updates work—and why the device matters
There is no single update procedure for every device. A manufacturer may provide its own update utility or instructions, while supported Windows systems can use a documented UEFI-based route for certain firmware packages. In that Windows method, the package contains a firmware image and Windows passes its payload to platform firmware through UEFI UpdateCapsule. Microsoft distinguishes system firmware from device firmware in its system firmware update documentation and says this UEFI method should not be used to update peripheral devices, since a removable peripheral may not be present during reboot. These details describe that particular Windows/UEFI path, not a universal process.

The UEFI Firmware Management Protocol includes services for identifying a firmware revision and programming a device with an image. Under the protocol, authentication may be required when an image’s attributes call for it, and the image must be supported for the target device. - Confirm that the update is intended for your exact device or component.
- Read the manufacturer’s release notes and installation instructions.
- Follow any power, restart, or recovery directions the manufacturer provides.
- Do not assume that an update is available, necessary, or delivered through the same mechanism on every device.
Microsoft states that CFU is available in Windows 10 version 2004 and later in its CFU specification. That version statement applies to CFU, not to firmware updates in general.
