A desktop search launcher gives you one place to find and open apps, files, and other supported items instead of navigating menus. What it can search or do depends on your operating system and the launcher: macOS Spotlight, Microsoft PowerToys Run, PowerToys Command Palette, and Raycast have different feature sets.
What a desktop search launcher does
A launcher combines a search box with ways to open results or trigger supported actions. You bring up the search surface, enter a recognizable name or query, then choose the intended result. Depending on the tool, results may include installed applications, files, folders, commands, or other items.

Which options work on your platform?
| Option | Platform | Documented capabilities |
|---|---|---|
| Spotlight | macOS | Apple’s macOS Tahoe materials describe search filters and an Actions browsing view. Apple’s employee guide describes opening Spotlight from the menu-bar icon or with Command-Space. Apple’s macOS Tahoe feature overview |
| PowerToys Run | Windows | Search and launch applications and files, use calculator functions, and access system commands. It also supports plugins. Microsoft PowerToys Run documentation |
| PowerToys Command Palette | Windows | Launch apps, run commands, search files, browse the web, and reach Windows tools. Its documentation also describes a compact search-box option. It is a separate PowerToys utility from Run. Microsoft Command Palette overview |
| Raycast | macOS and Windows materials are available | Its documentation describes access to apps, files, folders, windows, links, commands, AI, and snippets. Features and availability can vary by platform, so check the current documentation for your system. Raycast Quickstart and Raycast Search Bar |
How to use one in a basic workflow
- Open the search surface. Use the launcher’s configured shortcut or its documented entry point. On macOS, Apple describes opening Spotlight from the menu-bar icon or pressing Command-Space; shortcuts for third-party tools may depend on their settings.
- Type a distinctive query. Enter an app name, file or folder name, or a command supported by the selected tool. Search scope varies, so a result may not appear if its type is unsupported or unavailable to that launcher.
- Choose the intended result. Check the result’s name and type before opening it or invoking an action. A search launcher can surface different kinds of results in the same interface.
What to compare before choosing
- Platform and version: Spotlight is a macOS feature; PowerToys Run and Command Palette are Windows utilities. Feature details can change with operating-system and app versions. Apple’s newer Spotlight features described above are specifically associated with macOS Tahoe.
- Searchable item types: Decide whether you mainly need apps and files or also folders, windows, links, commands, and other supported results.
- Actions and extensions: PowerToys Run supports plugins; Command Palette documents commands and access to Windows tools; Apple describes an Actions browsing view in Tahoe Spotlight. Check the relevant product documentation for the actions you actually need.
- Setup and fit: PowerToys Run and Command Palette are separate utilities within Microsoft PowerToys, while Spotlight is built into macOS. Confirm availability and current setup instructions for your operating system before settling on a workflow. Microsoft describes PowerToys as free and open-source in its PowerToys overview.
Choosing a starting point
If you use a Mac, start with Spotlight if its search and actions cover your needs. On Windows, compare PowerToys Run with Command Palette rather than treating them as the same tool: Run offers plugins, while Command Palette documents a broader command-and-search surface with a compact search-box setting. Raycast is another option to investigate if its documented platform support and feature set suit your workflow; verify current platform availability before relying on a specific feature.
