Firebase Studio is Google’s cloud-based environment for building and sharing applications, developed from Project IDX. Bytes issue #419, published August 26, 2025, highlighted three parts of that evolution: AI assistance in the terminal, connections to external tools through MCP, and temporary public access to development servers and previews. The features are useful, but they have important boundaries: the CLI naming has since changed, MCP servers must fit the hosted environment, and public ports are not production hosting.
What is Firebase Studio?
Firebase Studio is a browser-based development environment for creating and sharing applications. Bytes #419 described it as the renamed Project IDX, presenting the change as Google’s continued development of a cloud workspace with AI assistance and closer Firebase integration. The newsletter’s account is editorial coverage; the individual Firebase product posts provide the more specific guidance on CLI, MCP, and public ports.

That distinction matters when reading the feature claims. Bytes reported that developers could prompt the environment to configure Authentication, Firestore, and Cloud Storage together. That combined workflow is described in the newsletter, but it is not independently confirmed by the official Firebase posts cited here.

The shift described in Bytes was not just a new name: Firebase Studio was presented as an environment integrating development tools, Firebase services, and ways to share work. The issue called attention to a terminal-based AI assistant, MCP connections for external tools, and public ports for accessing a running backend or preview. These capabilities address different needs; they are not interchangeable parts of a single deployment workflow.

What happened to Gemini CLI in Firebase Studio?
In a Firebase post published July 22, 2025, Jess Kuras described Gemini CLI as preinstalled in Firebase Studio. The documented historical workflow was to open a terminal in Code view and run gemini; the post also described non-interactive prompts using --prompt or -p. Firebase’s Gemini CLI post now includes an update about the transition to Antigravity CLI and links to migration guidance. Consequently, the 2025 command and setup should not be assumed to be the current Firebase Studio instructions. Check the updated migration information before using a CLI command or relying on the old integration.
How does MCP work in Firebase Studio?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) gives an AI development environment a standardized way to connect to external MCP servers, which can provide tools or data. Firebase’s July 9, 2025 post, by Staff Developer Relations Engineer James O’Reilly, documents configuration in .idx/mcp.json. It covers stdio and SSE/Streamable HTTP transports without special authentication. The instructions are specific to that documented setup; they do not establish support for every MCP server or authentication scheme.

Save the configuration and follow the workspace’s MCP setup flow to make the server available to the development environment.
Firebase says servers that require a graphical interface or desktop session are unsupported because the hosted workspace runs in a constrained virtual machine. Its documented MCP focus is on tools, so a server that depends on an interactive desktop or other unsupported requirements may not work even if it implements MCP.

Can you share a preview without deploying the app?
Yes. Firebase Studio’s public ports can expose a running backend or let someone open an app preview for feedback and testing. Firebase’s July 1, 2025 post, by Software Engineer Chandra Sekhar Pydi, says access lasts while the workspace is active; the underlying virtual machine typically runs for a few hours. This is temporary development access, not a production deployment. A production app needs to be deployed to a dedicated service rather than relying on a workspace port.
Firebase explains the feature and its limits in its public ports post.
Quick Recap
Which feature should you use?
| Need | Firebase Studio feature | Key boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Run AI-assisted terminal tasks | CLI integration; the 2025 post documents Gemini CLI | The post now notes the transition to Antigravity CLI, so verify current naming and instructions. |
| Connect external tools or data sources | MCP servers configured through .idx/mcp.json |
Documented transports are stdio and SSE/Streamable HTTP; GUI- or desktop-dependent servers are unsupported. |
| Let another person access a running backend or preview | Public ports | Access lasts only while the workspace is active; it is not production hosting. |
