Decades of unexplained bald eagle deaths were linked to a fatal neurological disease called avian vacuolar myelinopathy (AVM). In 2021, researchers identified its cause: aetokthonotoxin (AETX), a neurotoxin produced by a cyanobacterium that grows on aquatic plants. The toxin can move through the food web from contaminated vegetation to animals that eat it, and then to predators such as eagles.
What caused the eagle deaths?
The disease is AVM; the toxin identified as its causal agent is AETX. The 2021 study by Steffen Breinlinger and colleagues described AETX as a pentabrominated biindole alkaloid and concluded that it causes the neurological damage associated with AVM. The study, published in Science on March 26, 2021, resolved the central question of what causes this disease.

The toxin is produced by the cyanobacterium Aetokthonos hydrillicola, which grows on submerged aquatic vegetation, including invasive hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata). Hydrilla is not itself the toxin: it provides a surface and setting where the cyanobacterium can grow.

The evidence supports a food-web pathway. Animals that graze on contaminated aquatic vegetation can ingest AETX; predators may then be exposed when they eat affected prey. This explains how a toxin produced on underwater plants can ultimately affect eagles without the birds needing to eat the plants themselves.

The pathway depends on more than the presence of hydrilla. Bromide availability is an important environmental factor that promotes AETX production in the plant–cyanobacterium setting. Researchers found the toxin in environmental colonies on plant leaves; attempts to culture the cyanobacterium had not initially produced it. Mass-spectrometry imaging helped reveal a brominated compound associated with those colonies, directing attention to bromide’s role in toxin formation.
How was a decades-old mystery solved?
- The disease was recognized. AVM was first diagnosed in bald eagles in Arkansas in 1994, but its cause remained unknown.
- Researchers narrowed the setting. Earlier work associated AVM-positive waters with submerged aquatic vegetation and an epiphytic cyanobacterium—one living on plant surfaces.
- Environmental samples revealed a toxin. The decisive chemical evidence came from colonies on plant leaves, where imaging identified a brominated compound associated with the cyanobacterium.
- The causal role was tested. Breinlinger and colleagues reported the toxin’s identity, its biosynthetic gene cluster, and biological activity, concluding that AETX causes AVM.
The authors summarized their conclusion in the paper abstract: “We identify this cyanobacterial neurotoxin as the causal agent of vacuolar myelinopathy and discuss environmental factors—especially bromide availability—that promote toxin production.”

What do the reported numbers show?
- 1994: The year AVM was first diagnosed in bald eagles, according to the 2021 primary study.
- At least 130 bald eagles: Chemistry World reported this historical total in 2021 for birds recovered and properly diagnosed since AVM’s discovery. The report said actual fatalities were likely higher. It is not a current cumulative count.
- More than half of surveyed watersheds: The 2021 study summary reported that this share had hydrilla colonized by A. hydrillicola. That finding does not mean every such watershed had documented wildlife deaths.
Chemistry World’s March 2021 report describes the discovery chronology and the qualified historical eagle count. The available sources do not establish an updated cumulative death toll through 2026.
Does this explain every bald eagle death?
No. AETX explains AVM, a disease identified in particular affected reservoirs; it is not an explanation for every bald eagle death. Finding hydrilla or the cyanobacterium in a watershed does not by itself demonstrate that a specific bird died of AVM. The field findings describe colonization and associations, not a universal mortality outcome. The Max Planck Society study summary reports the watershed and reservoir findings in that context.

What questions remain?
Identifying AETX established the cause of AVM, but it did not settle every ecological question. The sources describe open questions about where bromide in affected waters comes from, how the toxin’s detailed mechanism works, and the extent of exposure or risk across other animal groups. The findings support a specific disease pathway; they do not establish how often all parts of that pathway occur across all waters.
