Nana, Press the Green Button is a small WhatsApp helper designed to guide a grandparent through everyday tasks with large buttons and short, step-by-step instructions. Malisha, its creator, describes support for English, Hindi and Marathi, with guidance for video calls, photos, voice messages, forwarding messages, text size and blocking spam. It is a project description, not an independently tested product or security review.
What the helper is designed to do
Malisha created the helper after regular calls with their grandmother, who often asked questions such as “Sweety, how do you video call?” and “How do I forward this message?” The project was submitted to DEV’s Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend. Its goal is to make familiar WhatsApp actions easier to follow without assuming the user knows the names of every control.

Instead of relying on technical labels, the instructions identify controls by their appearance or location—for example, the small camera at the top of the screen. The project description says the interface uses large buttons and instructions of no more than five steps.

- Increasing text size.
- Blocking spam.
The author lists English, Hindi and Marathi as instruction languages. The description does not establish whether every task is available in every language or how the guidance changes across WhatsApp versions or phone interfaces.

How the instructions are meant to stay focused
According to Malisha’s account, the app is built with Streamlit and uses a hand-written WHATSAPP_NOTES cheat sheet to guide Gemma through the Gemini API. The model is instructed to answer from those notes, use the selected language and keep instructions to five steps or fewer. For a question the notes do not cover, the intended response is to ask the user to get help from a grandchild rather than invent an answer.
Malisha summarizes that design principle as: “A wrong step is worse than no step.” That explains the intended fallback, but it does not prove that the app always follows its notes or gives accurate instructions. The author also recounts trying an offline local model and finding it too slow for the intended user; that is the author’s experience, not a current performance comparison.

What to know about safety and limitations
The project description says the helper warns users about requests for one-time passwords (OTPs) and bank details. It does not explain the warning’s implementation or report an independent security audit. Treat this as a stated warning, not a scam detector or a guarantee that a user will be protected.
- Do not share an OTP, banking password or other sensitive credentials in response to an unexpected message or call.
- If a step is unclear, the app’s intended fallback is to seek help from a trusted family member rather than guess.
- The project description does not establish current code behavior, model version, service availability, cost or compatibility with a particular WhatsApp or phone version.
Opening it on a phone
Malisha says the helper can be opened on the intended user’s phone and added to its home screen. The write-up does not specify a required screen size, provide a particular phone recommendation or establish exact installation steps, so those details should not be assumed. The described setup depends on having the helper available on the phone; the source does not establish whether it works offline.

What the project description does—and does not—establish
The description gives a clear picture of the intended experience: short instructions, large buttons, three named languages and a fallback for questions beyond a written reference. It does not independently verify usability with older adults, the accuracy of the instructions, the reliability of the fallback, or the effectiveness of the safety warning. Those are important distinctions for anyone deciding whether to rely on it for real-world guidance.
