What Fiber Internet Installation Involves and How to Prepare Your Home

A fiber installation typically brings a line into the home, connects provider equipment and tests service. Here’s how to prepare and what can vary.

Fiber installation usually means running a line from nearby infrastructure into your home, fitting an optical network terminal (ONT) or provider-specific equivalent, connecting the router and testing the service. Before the appointment, clear the likely work area, plan where equipment could go and confirm your provider’s access requirements. The exact equipment, route and timing depend on the provider and property.

What happens during a fiber installation?

For full-fiber service, a technician brings a fiber cable from a nearby pole or underground route to the property, then routes it indoors. The line ends at equipment that converts the optical connection for your home network. Openreach describes an external junction box and an indoor ONT; Google Fiber (GFiber) describes a Fiber Jack connected to a router. These are provider-specific arrangements, not universal equipment names or steps.

The technician may discuss the route and where the cable will enter the home. The work can involve drilling a small hole, digging or other exterior preparation. Openreach says it will ask permission before drilling, and notes that renters need landlord approval. Ask your provider what work is planned and who must authorize it.

Inside the home

The technician installs the ONT, Fiber Jack or equivalent, connects the router and checks the service. GFiber says its technician works with the customer to choose the Fiber Jack location, validates the network and runs a speed test. Openreach says the engineer checks the service before leaving. The checks and equipment can differ by provider.

Hitron CODA56 Cable Internet Modem ONLY - DOCSIS 3.1 | 2.5 Gbps | NO WiFi - Requires Router | Xfinity/Spectrum/Cox Compatible | NOT for Fiber/DSL
  • ⚠️ CABLE INTERNET ONLY - NOT COMPATIBLE WITH: Fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, Satellite, or Fixed Wireless. ONLY works with cable providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox. Verify your internet type BEFORE purchase.
  • 🚫 NO WiFi INCLUDED - ROUTER REQUIRED: This is a modem ONLY. You MUST buy a separate WiFi router to get wireless internet. Without a router, only ONE device can connect via Ethernet cable. This does NOT replace your current WiFi router.
  • 🔌 CABLE INTERNET REQUIRED: Works EXCLUSIVELY with cable internet service (DOCSIS) from providers like Xfinity, Spectrum, or Cox. Will NOT work with fiber (Verizon FiOS, AT&T), DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet. Contact your ISP to confirm compatibility BEFORE purchasing.
  • 🚀 MULTI-GIG PERFORMANCE: Supports internet plans up to 2.5 Gbps with 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. Designed for plans 1 Gbps and faster from certified providers: Xfinity (up to 2.33 Gbps), Spectrum (1 Gbps), Cox (2 Gbps). Verify your plan speed and provider compatibility.
  • 💡 SETUP REQUIREMENTS: You need: (1) Cable internet service, (2) Separate WiFi router with 2.5 Gbps port for full speeds, (3) ISP activation. This modem cannot create WiFi networks or connect multiple devices without additional equipment.

How long does installation take?

Provider estimates are not guarantees and should not be treated as an industry-wide average. Openreach says most installations take one to four hours, depending on property type and how the fiber is routed; a blocked duct can make the appointment longer. GFiber says its in-home appointment can take around two hours. These estimates are from the providers’ current installation guidance, accessed in 2026.

Some work outside the home may happen before the scheduled indoor appointment. Openreach says complex work can require a follow-up visit, so exterior preparation and the home appointment may be separate stages.

What should you do before the appointment?

  1. Clear access. Make space near the likely cable entry point and possible equipment locations. GFiber asks customers to clear the area where work may take place.
  2. Think about equipment placement. Choose a preferred location for the ONT or Fiber Jack and router, with suitable power nearby where needed. Discuss it with the technician: the cable route and provider process may limit placement options. Openreach advises that its ONT and router be close together and near prepared double power sockets.
  3. Confirm who must be home. Check the appointment instructions. Openreach requires someone over 18 to provide access and agree on equipment placement; GFiber also requires someone aged 18 or older for its appointment.
  4. Check permissions and connected devices. If you rent, ask your landlord whether drilling or other work needs approval. If a phone line supports an intruder alarm, health pendant or wrist alarm, contact your provider before installation; Openreach specifically advises doing so.
  5. Follow provider-specific instructions. Check for requirements involving building access, account details, an app or equipment. For example, GFiber asks customers to have access to their sign-up email and password and describes using its app.
  6. Manage the changeover. If your provider advises it, keep existing service until the new fiber installation is complete and the provider confirms the service is active. GFiber’s new-customer guidance says not to cancel existing service before its in-home installation is complete and service is confirmed.

What equipment and cables are involved?

The provider’s installation arrangement includes the ONT, Fiber Jack or equivalent; you should not buy one in advance. Some equipment also differs in how it receives power. GFiber Help lists multiple Fiber Jack models: some plug into a standard electrical outlet, while others receive power from the router. Follow the instructions for the model installed in your home rather than buying generic replacement hardware.

GFiber describes connecting its router to the Fiber Jack with an Ethernet cable. Whether a cable is supplied, whether you need a different length or whether your provider uses the same setup depends on the provider. Confirm before purchasing a replacement or longer cable.

What varies by provider and property?

  • Outside preparation: Find out whether work on the pole, underground route or property will be completed before the indoor appointment.
  • Access and attendance: Confirm whether an adult must remain present and whether the technician needs access to shared areas.
  • Equipment placement: Discuss practical locations for the fiber termination point and router, taking the cable route, power and home layout into account.
  • Supplied equipment: Ask what the provider supplies and whether any extra cable or power arrangement is needed.
  • Phone-dependent devices: Tell the provider about alarms or health devices that rely on a phone line.
  • Extra work: Ask whether drilling, digging, a blocked duct or other complications could extend the work or require another visit.

The provider guidance cited here comes from Openreach in the UK and GFiber in the United States. It illustrates common installation elements but does not establish universal costs, eligibility rules or appointment policies. Check your own provider’s instructions for those details.
