“Facebook smart glasses” usually means Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses: camera- and audio-equipped eyewear made by Meta and EssilorLuxottica. They connect to a phone and app, and supported models and regions also offer Meta AI features. They are ordinary-looking connected glasses, not a virtual-reality headset or necessarily display-based augmented-reality eyewear.
Why are they called Facebook smart glasses?
Facebook is the former name of the company now called Meta. The current product name is Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, so people searching for “Facebook smart glasses” are generally asking about that product. Meta and eyewear company EssilorLuxottica announced the collection in 2023. Meta’s announcement and EssilorLuxottica’s launch release describe the collaboration.

What do Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses do?
The glasses combine familiar eyewear with a camera, microphones, open-ear speakers, voice controls, and a connection to a phone and app. The wearer can use them for first-person photos and video, listening to audio, phone calls, and voice interaction with Meta AI where that feature is supported. Meta also described livestreaming to Facebook or Instagram at launch. Features can vary by model, software, country, and date; not every capability is available to every wearer.

Meta’s 2023 announcement listed a 12-megapixel camera and video recording at 1080p for clips up to 60 seconds. Those are launch-era specifications, not a guarantee for every current model or software configuration. The camera is intended for hands-free capture from the wearer’s point of view.

Audio, calls, and voice interaction
Open-ear speakers let the wearer hear audio without covering the ears, while built-in microphones support calls and voice commands. EssilorLuxottica’s 2023 release listed five built-in microphones for the announced collection; treat that as a historical specification rather than a universal description of later models.
Meta AI and livestreaming
Meta announced voice interaction with Meta AI and livestreaming to Facebook and Instagram as launch features. Whether AI functions, languages, social services, and other features are available depends on the model, app and software version, and supported region.

Are they VR or augmented-reality glasses?
Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are not a standalone immersive VR headset: they do not enclose the wearer’s view in a virtual environment. Nor should they be assumed to have an in-lens display. Their main functions are camera capture, audio, phone connectivity, and supported voice features. The product’s conventional eyewear form does not by itself indicate that it overlays digital images on the wearer’s view.

How recording and privacy signals work
Meta’s July 2026 FAQ says a white capture LED blinks when gallery content is captured and states that “The capture LED has no off switch.” Meta says covering or disabling that LED disables the camera. It also says gallery photos and videos remain on the glasses until the wearer chooses to import them to a phone. These are Meta’s descriptions of product behavior and data handling, not independent verification of privacy outcomes. Meta’s smart-glasses FAQ provides its guidance.

Meta’s responsible-innovation page describes controls in the Meta AI app for capture, voice, notifications, and sharing. Meta’s responsible-innovation information explains the company’s stated approach. In practice, recording rules and venue policies depend on location and setting. Meta guidance surfaced in current reporting advises users to respect people’s preferences and stop recording if someone objects; the Associated Press has also reported concerns and restrictions at some venues and retailers. AP’s report covers those concerns. Check local rules and venue policies rather than assuming one legal standard applies everywhere.

Styles, lenses, prescription options, features, supported languages, availability, and policies can change over time and by location. Meta’s 2023 announcement described prescription-lens compatibility and IPX4 water resistance for that announced generation. EssilorLuxottica’s release listed 21 style, color, and lens variations at launch. These are historical launch details, not current guarantees across all models. The companies’ current product and support information is the better place to verify what is offered in a particular country.
