A broad restriction under REACH is still being assessed; narrower rules already apply to certain PFAS and uses, and a separate EU measure limits PFAS in food-contact packaging placed on the market from 12 August 2026.
For consumers, that means some product formulations may change as rules develop, but the proposal alone is not a reason to discard an existing pan, jacket or other item. The eventual scope, exemptions and application dates for a broad restriction are not settled.

What are PFAS, and why are EU regulators considering restrictions?
PFAS—per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances—are a large family of synthetic chemicals, not a single ingredient. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) describes thousands of PFAS. Their strong carbon-fluorine bonds help make many of them persistent in the environment. ECHA’s PFAS overview explains the chemical family and the regulatory work underway.

PFAS are used for properties such as water repellency, grease resistance and non-stick performance. The European Commission identifies uses in products including cookware, textiles, food packaging, cosmetics and ski wax. Those are categories where PFAS may be used—not proof that every product in a category contains them. The Commission also says PFAS can be released during product use and when products become waste. It identifies contaminated drinking water and food as the primary human exposure routes in its overview, so a product category’s inclusion does not by itself show that an item is a major exposure source for an individual. The Commission presents the scale of pollution as an economic as well as environmental concern. It estimates that, if current pollution levels continue until 2050, the cost to society would be €440 billion; it puts the cost of treating polluted water alone at more than €1 trillion and says tackling releases at source could save €110 billion. These are Commission-presented estimates; its overview does not set out the underlying methodology, so they should not be read as independently verified totals. European Commission estimates
Is the broad EU PFAS restriction already law?
No. The broad restriction proposed under the EU chemicals regulation REACH is still in the assessment and decision-making process. It is not an enacted EU-wide consumer-product ban, and it does not currently require consumers to replace products.
National authorities from Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden submitted the proposal in January 2023. ECHA’s scientific committees assess it, including comments received during consultation. ECHA reports that its Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) adopted its opinion on 3 March 2026 and its Committee for Socio-Economic Analysis (SEAC) agreed its draft opinion on 11 March 2026; consultation on that draft closed on 25 May 2026. In June 2026, the Commission said it expected ECHA’s final scientific assessment by the end of 2026, after which the Commission would prepare a restriction proposal. A proposal would still need to go through subsequent EU decision-making before any resulting rules could apply. ECHA’s assessment status; Commission statement, 15 June 2026

- Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
- Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
- Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
- Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
- Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.
The Commission has said it will seek a ban on PFAS in consumer goods and on industrial uses where adequate alternatives exist. Commissioner Jessika Roswall described the direction as: “We support the transition away from forever chemicals and will seek a ban on PFAS in consumer goods and industrial uses where adequate alternatives exist.” That is a statement of future policy work, not the text of an adopted restriction. The Commission has also indicated that possible continued industrial use may depend on critical-use conditions and the availability of alternatives; the final treatment of those uses is not settled. European Commission, 15 June 2026
Which EU PFAS rules already apply, and when?
The broad proposal sits alongside separate measures that cover particular substances or uses. Their dates and scope should not be mistaken for the start of a universal PFAS ban.
| Measure | What it covers | Status and timing |
|---|---|---|
| C9–14 PFCAs and related substances | A defined group of PFAS and related substances | ECHA reports restrictions in the EU/EEA since February 2023. |
| PFHxA and related substances | A defined subgroup of PFAS, subject to the applicable restriction’s scope | ECHA reports that restrictions start in April 2026. |
| PFAS firefighting foams | PFAS in the specified firefighting-foam use | ECHA reports an adopted restriction beginning in October 2026. |
| Food-contact packaging | Packaging within the scope of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 that exceeds the regulation’s PFAS limits | From 12 August 2026, such packaging may not be placed on the EU market. |
| Broad REACH proposal | A proposed broad restriction whose final scope and conditions remain under assessment | Not final law. The Commission said in June 2026 it expected ECHA’s final scientific assessment by the end of 2026, followed by a Commission proposal. |
The packaging measure is a distinct adopted rule, not the broad REACH proposal. Regulation (EU) 2025/40 sets PFAS concentration limits for food-contact packaging placed on the market from 12 August 2026. The restriction concerns placing packaging that exceeds the applicable limits on the market; it should not be read as a direction to withdraw every existing package or as a rule covering every product that has ever contacted food. The regulation’s scope and qualifications determine which packaging is covered. Regulation (EU) 2025/40

Which everyday products could be affected?
ECHA and the Commission identify uses across several consumer-facing categories. A future broad restriction could lead to substitution or other product changes, but the precise consequences depend on the final legal text, including its scope, exemptions and dates.
Non-stick cookware and domestic appliances
ECHA’s use mapping includes non-stick coatings in consumer cookware and domestic appliances, and the Commission also lists non-stick cookware. If a future rule covers a particular substance or use, manufacturers could change coating formulations or product availability. Those are possible outcomes, not requirements already adopted for pans or appliances. A stainless-steel pan is one possible cookware option, but the material example does not certify any particular product as PFAS-free or mean that replacing a working pan is necessary.
Water-repellent clothing, home textiles, footwear and leather
PFAS uses include water-repellent treatments for textiles and apparel. The Commission says alternatives exist for some consumer textile and footwear uses, including newer water-repellency technologies. A restriction could encourage substitution and change product claims or performance, but the official sources do not quantify any like-for-like durability or water-repellency trade-offs. Compare products by the function needed, the treatment or material the manufacturer discloses, and the quality of product-specific evidence—not by an unsupported blanket “PFAS-free” claim.

- Unmatched Contaminant Protection: Your tap water faces threats most filters never address; the Clearly Filtered pitcher is backed by NSF certification and targets 386+ contaminants at up to 99.99% removal, including fluoride, lead, PFAS/PFOA, arsenic, microplastics, chlorine, and perchlorate. Our proprietary Affinity Filtration Technology uses ionic binding to capture contaminants while preserving beneficial minerals your body needs, targeting up to 73x more contaminants than typical store-bought filters.
- Family-Sized 80 Fl Oz Capacity: Stop refilling constantly; this large pitcher holds 80 fl oz (approximately 10 cups / 2.4 L), delivering enough filtered water for your entire family in a single fill. Designed to fit on standard refrigerator shelves, it features a spill-resistant water dam, a redesigned ergonomic comfort handle for confident pouring, and an easy hinge fill lid so refilling takes seconds, not effort
- Premium Medical-Grade Materials: The pitcher filtering your water should be as clean as the water itself; that is why Clearly Filtered uses medical-grade Tritan plastic that is BPA-free, BPS-free, non-leaching, and free from endocrine disruptors.
- Long-Lasting 100-Gallon Filter Life: Each filter handles up to 100 gallons, approximately 200 refills or roughly 4 months of daily use, so you spend less time thinking about replacements and more time drinking clean water. When it is time to swap, replacing the filter is simple and available with convenient, recurring ordering through Clearly Filtered.
- Independently Tested and Fully Transparent: Independently tested by a third-party lab and NSF certified to NSF/ANSI 43 and 372. Removal rates for fluoride, lead, chlorine, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, PFAS, phthalates, microplastics, and VOCs are all publicly available, making this the top-rated choice for health-conscious parents, wellness-focused adults, and anyone with tap water quality concerns
Food-contact packaging
This is the category with a separate adopted measure already taking effect: from 12 August 2026, food-contact packaging within Regulation (EU) 2025/40’s scope cannot be placed on the EU market if it exceeds the stipulated PFAS limits. This measure is separate from the pending broad restriction.
Cosmetics and ski wax
ECHA includes cosmetics and ski wax in its assessment of consumer mixtures and uses. That category-level mapping does not establish that a particular cosmetic or wax product contains PFAS. The official sources cited here do not provide a verified product-by-product list.
Batteries, lubricants and other uses
The Commission also names batteries and lubricants among PFAS uses. These broad categories include industrial as well as consumer-relevant applications; their mention does not mean that a consumer rule for every battery or lubricant has been finalized. Any future effect would depend on the substances and uses covered by the final measure.

Should consumers replace products or look for alternatives now?
The pending proposal alone is not a basis for discarding existing items or following a universal replacement recommendation. Whether a product is covered by a current or future rule depends on the substance, concentration, use and applicable legal measure.
- For a product decision, check the specific manufacturer’s material or treatment disclosures and whether a claim is supported for that product.
- For alternatives, compare the function you actually need—such as non-stick performance, water repellency or durability—and any product-specific substantiation. The Commission notes that alternatives exist for some consumer textile and footwear uses, but the cited official sources do not provide a general price or performance comparison.
- Do not treat a category’s appearance in an official use list as proof that your item contains PFAS, or as proof that a product labeled “PFAS-free” has been independently verified.
For current rules, distinguish the named subgroup restrictions and the packaging measure from the broad REACH proposal. The latter’s final scope, exemptions and application dates remain unsettled as of 7 October 2026.
