What Ergonomic Home Office Essentials Do You Actually Need?

Most people can improve a home office by adjusting what they already own. Here’s how to fit the chair, desk, screen, and input devices—and when an accessory is worth considering.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You probably do not need a premium chair, standing desk, wrist rest, or specialist keyboard to make a home office more comfortable. Start by fitting the chair and desk to you, centering the screen, and keeping the keyboard and mouse close. Buy an accessory only when your current setup cannot solve a specific fit problem.

Start with the setup, not the shopping list

There is no single workstation arrangement that fits everyone. The right setup depends on your body, the work you do, and which parts of your existing desk and equipment can be adjusted. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) makes the same point in its Computer Workstations eTool: no one posture or component arrangement suits every worker.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That makes “ergonomic essentials” less a universal product checklist than a short set of fit principles. First adjust what you own. Then identify what still forces you into an awkward position. An accessory is useful when it fixes that mismatch; its label alone does not guarantee comfort or prevent pain.

Before comparing products, name the problem you are trying to solve. Is the screen too low to view comfortably? Do your feet lose support when you adjust the chair to reach the desk? Do you have to reach for the mouse? Those are different mismatches, and they call for different adjustments or accessories. The most useful purchase is the one that addresses the actual problem while fitting your body, task, and available space.

Fit your chair and desk first

Set the chair to support you

Adjust the seat so your feet rest flat on the floor, or on a footrest if needed, and your thighs are approximately parallel to the floor. Your back should have support, and your shoulders should remain relaxed. Mayo Clinic’s office ergonomics guide, published May 25, 2023, puts it simply: “Choose a chair that supports your spine.”

If your chair has armrests, set them so they support your arms without lifting your shoulders. Check that you can sit back against the chair and still leave adequate room for your knees, thighs, and feet under the desk. Chair height, desk height, and leg clearance work together; a comfortable seat height is not helpful if it leaves your legs cramped.

When existing seating cannot provide back support or a workable height, an adjustable office chair is a reasonable category to consider. Focus on whether its adjustment range lets you find a supported position at your desk, and whether the chair fits in the space beneath it. A higher price or an “ergonomic” label by itself does not show that a chair will fit you.

Check the desk and leg space

Make sure the desk surface lets you place the keyboard and mouse where you can use them with relaxed shoulders. Keep knees, thighs, and feet clear of drawers, supports, and other obstructions. OSHA’s computer workstation purchasing guide treats surface space, keyboard height, and legroom as connected parts of workstation fit.

If a fixed-height desk creates a tradeoff, adjust the chair to reach the work surface while maintaining back support. If raising the chair means your feet no longer rest comfortably, a footrest may solve that particular problem. Do not add one automatically: first see whether the chair and desk can be adjusted to work together.

Think of a footrest as a response to unsupported feet, not a general comfort upgrade. If your feet already rest securely on the floor after the chair is adjusted, the cited OSHA and Mayo Clinic guidance does not identify a reason to add one. Likewise, do not solve legroom by choosing a chair or desk accessory before checking whether an obstruction or placement can be changed.

Position the screen in front of you

Place the monitor directly in front of your body, rather than off to one side, so you do not have to keep turning your head. Mayo Clinic suggests a viewing distance of about an arm’s length, with a guide range of 20–40 inches. OSHA’s monitor guidance says to keep the screen at least 20 inches away and place its top line at or below eye level. These are practical setup recommendations, not a promise that one distance will suit every screen, eyesight, or task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust the height so you can look at the screen with your head and neck in a comfortable position. Also check for glare: a bright window or light reflected in the display can make a well-positioned monitor harder to use. OSHA’s monitor guidance covers viewing distance, height, angle, and glare. Treat the distance figures as starting points for arranging your workstation, not as a reason to force yourself into an uncomfortable position.

When a monitor stand or arm helps

A separate monitor stand or arm can be useful if the display cannot otherwise be raised, lowered, or centered. It is an adjustment tool, not a basic requirement. Try repositioning the monitor and changing your chair or screen placement before buying one; choose an accessory only if the display still cannot reach a comfortable position.

When deciding between a stand or arm, the relevant question is whether it lets you make the adjustment your monitor needs and whether it works with your desk space. The cited guidance does not establish a universally preferable type or recommend a particular model.

Keep the keyboard and mouse close

Place the keyboard directly in front of you and the mouse beside it, within easy reach on the same surface. Keep your upper arms near your body, shoulders relaxed, and wrists straight while typing and pointing. Reaching forward or sideways for the mouse can pull your shoulders out of a relaxed position.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) advises against resting the wrists on the desk while typing or using a mouse, because pressure may contribute to contact stress. Its keyboard selection and use guidance, published and revised February 28, 2022, favors a neutral wrist position. A wrist rest is therefore not an automatic essential: do not use one as a reason to press your wrists into the desk or hold them in one position.

An external keyboard and mouse are worthwhile when your device or desk arrangement makes it difficult to keep your arms and wrists comfortable. For a desktop user, however, the key step is often simply moving existing input devices closer and arranging them well. Specialized keyboards are not part of the baseline checklist; consider a different device only if it addresses a specific difficulty with your current arrangement.

Keep frequently used items within reach

Also look at the objects you use throughout the day. Mayo Clinic’s guidance includes frequently used items as part of workstation setup. Keep the things you reach for often close enough that you do not have to repeatedly stretch or twist away from your working position. The same practical test applies: use the space you have to arrange them first, and buy storage or desk accessories only if your existing layout cannot do that.

If your work involves frequent phone calls, Mayo Clinic Health System’s home-workspace tips include headset use among their setup guidance. Consider whether a headset suits the way you work rather than treating it as a required purchase for everyone. The broader aim is to make common tasks fit the workstation, not to accumulate accessories by default.

For desk-based laptop work, consider a stand

A laptop combines the display and keyboard, which can make comfortable positioning a compromise: raising the screen also raises the built-in keyboard, while keeping the keyboard low can leave the display too low. For laptop use at a desk, Mayo Clinic suggests considering a laptop stand along with an external keyboard and mouse to more closely mimic a desktop setup.

That is a task-specific recommendation, not a rule for every laptop owner. If you use the laptop briefly, or its screen is already at a comfortable height for your work, the cited guidance does not make a stand mandatory. If you do raise the laptop, use a separate keyboard and mouse so you can keep the screen up without reaching awkwardly to the laptop’s built-in controls.

Mayo’s advice is to “consider” the combination; it is not a product test or a claim that a stand prevents pain. For desk-based laptop users, compare options by whether the stand places the screen where you need it, whether the separate keyboard and mouse can stay close, and whether the arrangement fits the desk. The stand solves the screen-height side of the laptop compromise; it does not replace the separate input devices that let you position your hands independently.

Buy accessories only for a remaining mismatch

Use this decision check before spending money. A useful accessory should solve a problem you can identify in your actual setup, fit your body and task, and work with the desk space you have.

  • Adjustable office chair: Consider one if your current seating cannot support your back, provide a workable seat height, or leave your feet supported. Check the chair’s adjustment range and whether it fits under your desk with enough legroom.
  • Laptop stand: Consider one for desk-based laptop work when the built-in screen sits too low and raising it would improve viewing position. Pair it with a separate keyboard and mouse.
  • External keyboard and mouse: Consider these when a laptop’s integrated keyboard and touchpad prevent you from placing your hands comfortably while the screen is at a usable height.
  • Footrest: Consider one only if adjusting the chair leaves your feet unsupported and the desk cannot be adjusted to fix the problem.
  • Monitor stand or arm: Consider one if you cannot otherwise center or raise a separate monitor to a comfortable position.
  • Specialized keyboard or wrist rest: Neither is a default requirement. The basic aim is comfortable reach and straight wrists; a specific accessory needs a specific reason.
  • Headset: Consider whether it fits your phone-call tasks; it is not a universal workstation requirement.

For any adjustable product, look at its adjustment range and whether it fits both your body and available workspace. Also ask whether moving existing equipment would solve the issue first. OSHA’s purchasing guide is useful for evaluating workspace surfaces, seating, and adjustment options without assuming that every worker needs the same equipment. This is a criteria-based way to compare categories; the cited guidance does not rank brands or models.

Movement is part of a workable home office

Good positioning does not mean holding one posture all day. Mayo Clinic Health System recommends varying sitting and standing time and making room for stretches and physical activity. Its home-workspace tips were published March 30, 2020. Changing position is a complement to a well-fitted workstation, not a reason everyone must buy a standing desk.

WorkSafe New Zealand’s guidance for people working from home recommends a five-minute break every hour of continuous mouse and keyboard use. Treat that as the interval from that specific guidance, not a universal schedule established across all authorities. The practical takeaway is to avoid treating a fixed setup as a substitute for movement and breaks.

In other words, buying a standing desk is not the only way to vary position: the recommendation is to vary sitting and standing time where practical, not that everyone needs a particular piece of furniture. Add stretches and physical activity as part of the day, while keeping the workstation fit check focused on the way you actually work.

A quick home-office fit check

  1. Sit back in your chair. Adjust its height so your feet are supported, thighs are approximately parallel to the floor, and your back is supported. Set armrests, if available, so your shoulders stay relaxed.
  2. Check the desk. Confirm that your knees, thighs, and feet have room, and that you can place the keyboard and mouse without reaching.
  3. Center the display. Put the screen in front of you, adjust its height to a comfortable viewing position, and check distance and glare.
  4. Arrange input devices. Keep the keyboard in front and the mouse close beside it. Use them with relaxed shoulders and straight wrists.
  5. Check everyday reach. Move frequently used objects close enough for comfortable access, and consider whether a headset fits your phone-call tasks.
  6. Resolve what remains. If a laptop screen, unsupported feet, or an unadjustable monitor still forces an awkward position, choose the accessory that addresses that specific issue.
  7. Vary your position. Make room for breaks, stretches, and changes between sitting and standing where practical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy an ergonomic chair to work comfortably at home?

Not necessarily. First adjust the chair you have so your back is supported, your feet are flat on the floor or supported, and your thighs are approximately parallel to the floor. Consider an adjustable chair if your current seating cannot provide support or a workable height, and check its adjustment range and fit under your desk.

Is a standing desk an ergonomic essential?

No. Mayo Clinic Health System recommends varying sitting and standing time, but that does not mean everyone needs to buy a standing desk. Use the setup and furniture you have to vary position where practical.

Do I need a wrist rest?

It is not a default requirement. CCOHS advises keeping wrists neutral and cautions against resting them on the desk while typing or using a mouse because pressure may contribute to contact stress. Arrange the keyboard and mouse close, with shoulders relaxed and wrists straight.

When should I use a laptop stand?

Consider one for desk-based laptop work if the built-in screen sits too low. Mayo Clinic suggests pairing a stand with an external keyboard and mouse so the screen and input devices can be positioned separately. A stand is not mandatory if your laptop is used briefly or its screen is already at a comfortable height.

How often should I take a break from computer work?

WorkSafe New Zealand recommends a five-minute break every hour of continuous mouse and keyboard use. That is the interval from that specific guidance, not a schedule established as universal consensus; Mayo Clinic Health System also recommends varying positions and making room for stretches and physical activity.

The Bottom Line

Start by adjusting your chair, desk, screen, keyboard, and mouse—not by buying a product bundle. Add an adjustable chair, laptop stand, external input devices, footrest, or monitor accessory only when it solves a specific fit problem that repositioning your existing equipment cannot. Keep the arrangement suited to your body and task, and make room for movement.
