Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For liquid-nitrogen CPU cooling, you need two separate cryogenic components: a CPU-mounted LN2 pot that holds coolant at the processor, and a purpose-rated, vented dewar for storing or transferring the liquid. The rest of the setup is just as important: compatible mounting hardware, temperature monitoring, condensation insulation and absorbent materials, a stable test bench, cryogenic PPE, and a ventilated work area. This is specialist equipment for short extreme-overclocking or benchmarking sessions—not a routine desktop cooling upgrade.
Start by separating the pot from the dewar
The CPU pot and the dewar have different jobs. The pot mounts over the processor and acts as the cooling interface; the dewar is the purpose-built vessel used to store or transport liquid nitrogen. A dewar is not the part that attaches to the CPU, and the pot is not a substitute for a cryogenic storage vessel. Planning for both prevents a common equipment mistake: sourcing a CPU pot while overlooking safe storage and transfer.

Liquid nitrogen (LN2) is used in specialist overclocking to cool a processor far below ordinary operating temperatures during a benchmarking session. It is not a set-and-forget cooler. The hardware, temperature monitoring, insulation, and safe handling arrangements must work together, and the right choices depend on the processor, socket, motherboard layout, pot, and operator.
Equipment checklist
1. CPU LN2 pot and compatible mount
The pot holds LN2 at the CPU. Its mounting system must fit the processor socket and the board arrangement. Do not assume that pots or mounts follow a universal standard: check the pot maker’s compatibility information for the exact socket and mounting configuration, and confirm that the arrangement clears nearby components.

Mounting is only one part of the fit. The pot, its contact surface, and the motherboard area around the socket must allow the insulation to be applied and the temperature probe to be positioned as intended. A specialist build guide illustrates fitting and insulating a pot, but it does not establish that one pot design or mounting method works for every board.
2. Stable motherboard setup or open test bench
You need a motherboard and processor configured for benchmarking, with a stable way to support the board and pot. An open test bench is a practical format because it leaves the CPU area accessible for mounting, insulation, and observation. A different stable setup may be suitable, but it must provide room to work and must not make the pot or board liable to shift.
Some enthusiast builds include motherboard changes, but these are not universal requirements. Do not treat a modification shown in one build as necessary for every board. Determine what the specific platform and session require rather than altering hardware by default.

A temperature-measuring instrument is part of the cooling setup, not an optional convenience. Specialist LN2 preparation material identifies a K-type thermocouple and reader for monitoring temperature. Before choosing a probe and meter, check the probe’s temperature range, connector, and compatibility with the reader. A probe that physically plugs in is not automatically suitable for the temperatures or equipment involved.

Also check how the probe is intended to be positioned for the particular pot and session. The equipment overview does not establish one universal probe location, target temperature, or operating recipe. Temperature behavior depends on the hardware and the way the session is run, so do not infer a target from an unrelated build.
4. Condensation insulation and absorbent materials
Cold surfaces can lead to moisture around the CPU socket and nearby board components. Insulation and moisture management are therefore part of the build, not cosmetic finishing. Specialist guides describe kneadable eraser around the socket and nearby components, neoprene or foam around the pot, and towels as absorbent layers. One cited setup also uses thermal paste at the CPU-to-pot interface.
These are examples, not a universally validated recipe. Board layouts, insulation materials, pot designs, and application methods differ. Select materials that can be applied around the actual socket and pot, do not obstruct the mount or probe, and can be removed or inspected as needed. The objective is to manage condensation around the cold area; copying a material list without accounting for the specific board does not establish that the insulation is adequate.

Use a vessel designed and rated for cryogenic service, with its intended venting and pressure-relief provisions intact. Confirm whether the vessel is intended for the storage, transport, or dispensing role you need, and follow its manufacturer’s instructions. Transfer equipment must likewise be suitable for cryogenic use and compatible with the vessel and local supplier procedures.

Do not use an ordinary thermos or vacuum flask as a cheaper substitute. Berkeley Lab guidance explicitly rejects consumer thermoses and vacuum flasks for cryogens; they are not approved replacements for equipment designed to manage cryogenic liquid and boil-off. Never seal a vessel containing LN2 or defeat its safety devices.
6. Cryogenic PPE and a ventilated work area
Handling and transferring LN2 require suitable personal protective equipment and a work area with adequate ventilation. University safety guidance calls for loose-fitting cryogenic gloves, protective clothing, and suitable eye or face protection. Follow the procedures of the site where the work takes place; clothing and protective equipment must be appropriate to the transfer task and local rules.
Handle slowly to limit splashing, and keep the work in a ventilated space. LN2 can cause cold injury and splashes, while evaporating nitrogen gas can displace oxygen. These risks are why a specialist overclocking guide should not be treated as a complete cryogen-handling procedure.

A benchmarking setup also needs the ordinary platform equipment: a stable power supply, the motherboard, CPU, and memory being tested, plus suitable voltage and diagnostic tools. The exact supporting hardware varies by platform. Specialist preparation material discusses close voltage monitoring and bench preparation, but it does not establish a single required tool list for every CPU and board.

Choose support tools around the intended platform and the measurements you need to make. Avoid treating any voltage setting or diagnostic arrangement from one enthusiast configuration as a universal recommendation.
How to choose among equipment options
There is no established universal “best” pot, probe, or insulation method in the available specialist material. Use compatibility and safe intended use as the decision criteria, rather than assuming a popular design fits your hardware.
| Equipment | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CPU pot and mount | Socket and board fit; clearance around the socket; compatibility of mounting hardware. | The pot must attach securely and leave room for the rest of the setup. |
| Thermocouple and reader | K-type compatibility; probe temperature range; connector and meter compatibility. | A mismatched probe or reader may not provide the monitoring the setup requires. |
| Insulation and absorbent materials | Fit around the actual board and pot; application and removal needs; moisture management. | Materials and layout vary, so an example from another build is not a guaranteed recipe. |
| Dewar and transfer equipment | Cryogenic-service rating; intended storage or dispensing use; venting and pressure-relief design; supplier and manufacturer instructions. | Equipment must be designed to manage cryogenic liquid and boil-off safely. |
| PPE and work area | Suitability for the task; eye or face protection; protective clothing; ventilation and site procedures. | Handling presents cold-injury, splash, and oxygen-displacement hazards. |
The comparison criteria above are selection checks, not a ranking or compatibility guarantee. Product specifications and fit must be verified for the actual equipment; no standard pot mount, preferred insulation recipe, or universally suitable probe range is established here.
Why ventilation and vessel design are non-negotiable
The University of Houston’s Environmental Health and Safety guidance gives LN2’s boiling point as −195.6 °C and its liquid-to-gas expansion ratio as 696:1. The large change in volume as liquid becomes gas helps explain why venting and room ventilation matter. It is not safe to treat LN2 like an ordinary liquid in a closed container.

A dewar’s intended venting and pressure-relief provisions are safety features. Keep them in service and follow the vessel manufacturer’s instructions. Penn guidance describes dewar pressure-relief and use considerations, while Berkeley Lab warns against consumer vacuum flasks for cryogens. These institutional safety sources support a straightforward rule: use equipment designed for cryogenic service, never seal LN2 in a container, and do not improvise a vessel from household drinkware.
What this equipment list does—and does not—tell you
This is an equipment overview, not an LN2 operating procedure. It does not establish how to pour or top up LN2, how to apply a particular insulation system, or what temperature or voltage to target. Those details depend on the hardware, procedure, and operator; the specialist build examples do not prove a technique safe for every configuration.
Before a session, consult the manufacturer instructions for the pot, mount, probe, dewar, and transfer equipment, and follow local cryogen-handling rules. If you cannot confirm that the vessel and transfer arrangement are rated for the intended use, or cannot provide appropriate PPE and ventilation, do not proceed.
Practical pre-session equipment check
- Match the cooling hardware. Confirm that the pot and mounting hardware fit the CPU socket and motherboard arrangement.
- Prepare a stable bench. Arrange the motherboard, processor, memory, and power supply so the socket and pot area remain accessible and supported.
- Confirm the temperature instruments. Check that the K-type probe and reader have compatible connectors and a suitable temperature range for the intended equipment.
- Plan socket and pot insulation. Choose materials for the actual board layout, including an approach to moisture absorption, rather than relying on another build’s recipe as a universal standard.
- Check the cryogenic supply equipment. Verify the dewar and transfer equipment are intended for cryogenic use, and that venting and pressure relief remain intact.
- Set up the work area and PPE. Confirm suitable gloves, protective clothing, eye or face protection, adequate ventilation, and compliance with local procedures.
If any compatibility or safety check is unresolved, pause and confirm it with the equipment manufacturer, LN2 supplier, or site safety staff. Having a CPU pot alone is not a complete or safe LN2 cooling setup.
