PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog; Essential does not. Extra is the tier to choose if access to that on-demand library is your main reason to upgrade. Premium includes Extra’s benefits and adds the Classics Catalog, Game Trials, and cloud streaming where available. All three tiers include Monthly Games and online multiplayer.
The practical choice is whether you want a changing subscription library, and whether Premium’s additional features are worth its higher price to you. A catalog listing is not a promise that a specific game is available in every country or will stay in the library, so check the current listing for your region before subscribing for one title.

Which PlayStation Plus tiers include the Game Catalog?
The Game Catalog is included with Extra and Premium, not Essential. PlayStation describes it as a library of hundreds of games, but its contents can change over time and vary by tier and region. A large catalog does not guarantee that a particular game is included now, so check the listing in your country before choosing a plan based on one title. PlayStation’s US plan comparison and games and plans page describe the current tiers and catalog.

In short, Essential is the core membership tier; Extra adds an on-demand library of catalog games; Premium includes that same Game Catalog and layers on additional benefits. If your question is simply “Which tier has the Game Catalog?”, the answer is Extra or Premium. If your question is “Which tier should I pay for?”, the deciding factor is whether you will use the catalog or Premium’s extras enough to justify the cost.
How the Game Catalog differs from Monthly Games
Monthly Games and the Game Catalog are separate membership benefits. Essential includes Monthly Games but not the Game Catalog; Extra and Premium include both. That distinction matters if you want to browse a larger subscription library rather than rely on the games offered through the monthly benefit.
Extra adds catalog access to Essential’s core benefits. Premium adds more than the Game Catalog: its additional features are the Classics Catalog, Game Trials, and cloud streaming where available. The US plan comparison also lists a Sony Pictures Catalog for Premium. These are separate benefits, not alternate names for the Game Catalog.
Think of these as different reasons to subscribe rather than interchangeable labels. The Game Catalog is the benefit tied to Extra and Premium. Monthly Games are part of all three tiers, including Essential. The Classics Catalog is a Premium addition, as are Game Trials and cloud streaming where offered. If a feature name is what brought you to the plan page, check which benefit the game or service is actually listed under; seeing a game mentioned in a PlayStation Plus context does not by itself establish that it is part of the Game Catalog or available to every tier.
Extra also includes Ubisoft+ Classics. That is another added library benefit associated with Extra and Premium, not a reason to mistake Essential for a catalog tier. PlayStation describes the Game Catalog as containing hundreds of games, but does not publish a precise count on the pages reviewed here. Treat “hundreds” as a broad description, not a count of titles guaranteed to be available in your country on a particular day.
What does each tier cost in the United States?
The following prices were displayed on PlayStation’s US plan comparison, accessed October 13, 2026. They are US storefront figures, not a global price list, and are subject to change. Check the price shown in your local PlayStation Store before buying or upgrading.
| Tier | Monthly | Every three months | Annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 |
These amounts are the listed US storefront prices, rather than a guarantee of what a customer will be charged in another country or at a later date. See the US plan comparison and US games and plans page for plan information; verify the amount displayed for your account and region at checkout.
The listed annual prices make the upgrade differences easier to see. Extra is $55 more per year than Essential at these US prices; Premium is another $25 per year above Extra. On the monthly option, Extra is $6 more than Essential, while Premium is $3 more than Extra. For three-month plans, those respective differences are $16 and $11. These are simple comparisons of the displayed prices, not a promise that every plan or price will remain available. They can help frame the decision: the first step up buys Game Catalog access, while the additional Premium step buys Premium’s extra benefits on top of Extra.

Compare like with like when budgeting. A monthly figure is not the same commitment as an annual price, and prices differ between the plan durations listed above. If you are uncertain whether you will use the catalog or Premium features, consider the price and duration offered by your local store rather than assuming the US annual comparison applies to you. Taxes, currency, promotions, and local plan options may affect what appears at checkout; the reliable amount is the one shown for your account and region when you are ready to buy.
Is Extra or Premium the better upgrade?
Choose Extra when the Game Catalog is the deciding factor
If your main goal is access to the Game Catalog, Extra is the relevant tier: it includes the catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics, along with Essential benefits. Premium also includes the Game Catalog, but its additional price is for its extra benefits—not a different version of the Game Catalog.
Extra is the straightforward middle option if you want to browse and download games from the catalog but do not particularly want the Classics Catalog, Game Trials, or cloud streaming. It also preserves the Essential benefits, including Monthly Games and online multiplayer. Before paying, check whether the games that interest you are currently listed in your region and whether the tier shown for those titles is Extra or Premium.

At the displayed US annual prices, Extra costs $55 more than Essential. That difference is the relevant comparison if you are upgrading specifically to get the Game Catalog. Whether that is worthwhile depends on how often you expect to use the added library and whether its current selection includes games you want to play. The catalog is not a fixed collection, so do not base the calculation on a title you have not verified in the current listing.
Consider Premium for its additional features
Premium may make sense if you also want its Classics Catalog or Game Trials, or if cloud streaming is available to you and is a feature you intend to use. Compare those benefits with the additional price shown for your region; do not assume that every Premium feature is available in every country.
At the listed US prices, Premium is $25 more per year than Extra, or $3 more per month on the monthly option. The question is not whether Premium has the Game Catalog—it does—but whether its extra benefits are useful enough to justify the difference. If your reason for considering Premium is a feature that depends on location or device, verify that feature’s availability and requirements first. Otherwise, you could pay more for an option you cannot use in your circumstances.
The US plan comparison also lists a Sony Pictures Catalog with Premium. That is a US-page detail, not evidence that the same catalog or benefit is available in every country. As with cloud streaming, check your local plan description rather than assuming the US feature list is universal.
Stay with Essential if the catalog is not needed
If Monthly Games and the core membership benefits meet your needs, Essential provides those without Game Catalog access. Paying for Extra or Premium is not necessary simply to receive online multiplayer or Monthly Games, which are included across all three tiers.
Rank #3
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Essential is also the clear answer if you do not plan to use an on-demand library and do not need Premium’s additional benefits. You still get the shared core benefits PlayStation lists: online multiplayer, Monthly Games, discounts, exclusive content, Share Play, and cloud storage. The fact that Essential does not include the Game Catalog does not mean it lacks the Monthly Games benefit; the two are distinct.
Check a specific game and feature before upgrading
- Look up the game in your country’s current catalog. Membership libraries vary by region and change over time, so confirm the title is listed for your location rather than relying on an old catalog reference.
- Confirm which tier includes it. The Game Catalog is an Extra and Premium benefit; Essential does not include it. Check the current title listing for tier eligibility.
- Decide whether Premium’s extras matter to you. If you want only the Game Catalog, Extra includes it. If you also want Classics Catalog, Game Trials, or cloud streaming where available, compare Premium’s additional price and regional availability.
- Verify the local price at checkout. US prices shown above may not match your storefront or a later price display.
PlayStation’s official games and plans page describes the catalog and plan options. Check the listing there or in your local store for the current availability of an individual title.
For a practical comparison, make a short list of the games and benefits you actually want rather than choosing by tier name or catalog size alone. First verify that the game is listed for your country and that the relevant membership tier is shown. Then compare the cost of the plan duration you would buy. If a game is not in the current catalog, a larger advertised library does not change that. If it is available through Extra, Premium does not provide a different Game Catalog entitlement; the Premium decision comes down to whether its other benefits matter to you.

For cloud streaming, confirm both that it is offered where you live and that your device meets PlayStation’s requirements. Important catalog and availability limits
The library changes
PlayStation says its game library varies over time and by tier. Catalog access is therefore access to a changing subscription library, not a promise that every listed game will remain available indefinitely. Confirm a specific title’s current status before subscribing for it.
This is especially important if you are upgrading for one game or planning around a future playthrough. A catalog description such as “hundreds of games” describes the scale of the offering, not a guarantee of permanence, a guaranteed selection in every country, or a specific number of games you can access. Check the current catalog listing before you make the purchase decision and again if you are planning to play a title later.
PS4 additions are becoming intermittent
PlayStation’s plan page says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. That affects expectations about future catalog additions: do not assume PS4 games will continue to arrive at a regular pace.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

This note is about the pace of additions, not a claim that existing PS4 catalog games have all been removed or that no PS4 titles will be added. The useful takeaway is narrower: if you are counting on a steady stream of new PS4 additions, PlayStation’s stated approach since January 2026 does not promise a regular cadence. Review the current library for the games you want rather than projecting future additions from past patterns.

Premium streaming is not universal
Cloud streaming has regional and device conditions. PlayStation’s US information notes streaming requirements, and its games page says streaming availability excludes overseas territories. Confirm eligibility and requirements for your country and device rather than treating streaming as a guaranteed Premium feature everywhere.
Premium includes cloud streaming where available; the qualification matters. Do not infer that a US plan description guarantees service in another territory, or that every device supports the feature. If streaming is the main reason you are considering Premium, verify the local availability and requirements before upgrading. If it is not available to you, compare Premium based on the other features you can use instead.

A PlayStation Store gift card can be a payment option or a gift for someone choosing a membership. PlayStation says gift-card credit can be used toward any PlayStation Plus membership, and cards are available from online and physical retailers. PlayStation Direct also lists digital gift cards and a PlayStation Plus gift-card category.

Match the card amount to the current price, plan duration, region, and any applicable taxes or checkout conditions. Check the recipient’s storefront and the current membership price before selecting a value. Gift-card availability and product listings can vary by retailer; these details do not establish that a particular retailer has stock or a current offer.
Gift-card credit can therefore help pay for Essential, Extra, or Premium, but it does not change which features each tier includes. If the recipient specifically wants the Game Catalog, Extra or Premium is still required. If the recipient only wants Monthly Games and core benefits, Essential remains the tier that includes those without Game Catalog access.
What to remember about the US price figures
The prices above are the amounts shown on PlayStation’s US pages, not a worldwide price schedule. The PlayStation Plus plan comparison and games and plans page are the relevant places to check the offer and price for the United States. For another country, use that country’s PlayStation Store or plan page. Currency conversion from a US figure will not reliably reproduce local pricing.
The figures are also a snapshot of what the US storefront displayed when checked on October 13, 2026. Plans and prices can change. Before buying, confirm the current amount and plan duration on the checkout screen. If you are comparing Extra with Premium, use the prices actually offered to you rather than treating the $25 annual or $3 monthly difference described above as permanent.
