Employees may rate workplace AI favorably in a survey and still raise a substantive concern when asked about the same theme in a later AI voice interview. A September 2026 preprint reports that pattern at one global consulting firm—but it does not show that voice interviews reliably uncover hidden views or produce more honest answers than surveys.
What the voice-agent study found
In a field study at one global management consulting firm, researchers paired a pre-survey with an adaptive AI voice interview about the same themes during one session. The accessible record reports 44 first-session interviews and 132 matched theme observations.

Depending on the threshold used to classify a survey rating as favorable, 20–41% of sessions included a favorable rating alongside a substantive concern voiced later. The outcome was a mismatch between channels, not proof that a worker had deliberately concealed an opinion or that the voice agent uncovered a definitive truth.
The authors’ qualitative analysis drew on 158 “protective quotes” from 65 eligible sessions. They describe employees as softening concerns, deflecting accountability, or limiting how far they went, with this protective framing related to how legitimate the listening process seemed to them. As the authors put it, “Silence, we argue, can persist inside expression.”

The preprint, “Positive Ratings, Hidden Concerns: Employee Voice Disclosure in AI-Mediated Organizational Listening,” by Thilo Tamme, Michael Saatkamp, Alma Bonte, Daniel Weiss, Anton Hantel, and Andrej Levin, is dated September 30, 2026. It concerns one organization whose identity is not given in the accessible record. The study paired two ways of asking questions; it does not establish that the voice format caused greater candor. The arXiv record is a preprint, and peer-review status is not established.
Does an AI voice interview get more honest answers than a survey?
This study cannot answer that as a general rule. It documents that a favorable survey response did not always preclude a later concern in the same listening process. A mismatch may reflect nuance, different wording or context, or a person choosing how much to disclose; it is not, by itself, evidence of dishonesty.

To judge a survey-and-interview comparison, organizations and readers would need to know whether both channels asked about the same theme, whether the interview adapted its questions, and whether workers thought their answers could be linked to them or affect their standing. They would also need clear information about who could access recordings or transcripts, how long data would be retained, and how the responses would be used. Finally, “more candid” must be distinguished from more detailed, more comfortable, or simply longer responses. The accessible study record does not establish all of these conditions or compare the channels in a way that proves one is superior.
Why workplace AI and monitoring are sensitive subjects
Broader surveys help explain why employees might approach workplace listening carefully, but they measure AI use, attitudes, or monitoring—not disclosure to a voice agent.

AI use and management practices in the EU
The European Commission’s October 21, 2025 summary of the AIM-WORK survey reports that 30% of workers in the EU use AI tools at work, including large-language-model chatbots; common uses include writing and translation. The same summary says 37% report that employers use AI and other tools to monitor working hours, while 24% report that schedules are set automatically. These are workers’ reports of workplace practices, not estimates of how candidly they talk to AI interviewers.
The Joint Research Centre’s methodology record describes 70,316 respondents aged 16–65 across all 27 EU Member States. Fieldwork ran from October 23, 2024, through January 21, 2025, using mobile-only computer-assisted telephone interviewing. The survey covered digital devices, AI tools, digital monitoring, and algorithmic management.

U.S. workers’ feelings about AI
Pew Research Center reported in February 2025 that 52% of surveyed U.S. workers felt worried about how AI might be used at work in the future. In that survey, 36% felt hopeful, 33% overwhelmed, and 29% excited. These responses describe attitudes, not whether workers conceal their own AI use or how an interview format affects their answers.

A U.S. Government Accountability Office review from August 2024 summarized 217 public comments from 211 stakeholders about automated worker surveillance. The comments discussed cameras and microphones, computer-monitoring software, geolocation, tracking applications, and wearables. Some stakeholders described security or safety benefits; workers and unions also raised concerns about stress, morale, privacy, distrust, and possible bias. Because GAO synthesized submitted comments, this review does not estimate how common each experience is among workers.

The study does not test a particular privacy policy or prove that any safeguard increases candor. Still, its emphasis on perceived legitimacy, alongside the concerns raised in surveillance discussions, points to a practical requirement: employees should understand the listening arrangement before being asked to discuss potentially sensitive subjects.
- Access: Say who can see recordings, transcripts, summaries, or individual answers.
- Use: Explain how feedback will inform decisions and whether it may be linked to an employee or affect their standing.
- Retention: State what data is kept and for how long.
- Choice and limits: Describe any applicable limits on participation or confidentiality, without promising anonymity unless it is actually protected.
Those disclosures are recommendations for responsible practice, not interventions tested by the field study. A voice agent can collect speech without making the listening process feel safe; the format alone does not guarantee unguarded feedback.
