These are separate features, not a promise that a controller replaces a mouse and keyboard across Windows. What works depends on the app, Windows version, and controller model.

Navigate apps that support gamepads
Windows gives app developers ways to make interfaces work with a gamepad. In an app that implements directional focus navigation, use the D-pad or left stick to move between controls, then press A or Select to activate the focused item. This is most useful for interfaces designed around discrete buttons, tiles, or menus.

It is app-level support, not a universal gamepad mode for the Windows desktop. If an app has not implemented gamepad navigation, the controller may do nothing outside the game or feature that recognizes it. Microsoft also describes mouse mode for app experiences where moving focus through controls is not practical: “For app experiences where XY focus navigation isn’t practical (such as maps or drawing apps), enable mouse mode.” That guidance is for developers; it does not mean every Windows app automatically provides mouse control from a standard gamepad. Use Windows 11 Xbox mode for full-screen gaming
Xbox mode is a console-inspired, full-screen gaming experience with an interface designed for controller navigation. It is a better fit for browsing and launching games from a couch than trying to control the ordinary desktop with a gamepad.

Check requirements and availability
Microsoft Support documents Xbox mode for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and says it is available only in supported markets. Its page, originally published October 20, 2025, lists Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 as applicable. Availability can depend on market and rollout, so confirm the current support information for your region and PC before relying on it. Microsoft Support: Windows Gaming: Full screen experience
Turn it on and leave it
- On a supported Windows 11 PC, open Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode and enable the feature.
- Use a documented entry point such as Game Bar or Task View to enter the full-screen experience.
- To return to the desktop, use Task View or press Win+F11.
Expect a gaming-focused environment rather than ordinary desktop multitasking. Microsoft notes that apps may show one window at a time, some desktop keyboard shortcuts are disabled, and an app that does not support full screen may appear against a black background. Keep a keyboard handy if you need desktop controls or text entry that the controller interface does not provide. Microsoft Support

Map controller buttons to keyboard inputs on specific Xbox controllers
Xbox Accessories supports controller-to-keyboard input mapping on PC for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. The feature lets a mapped button send a keyboard input in addition to the controller’s other functions; it is not a general-purpose keyboard emulator for every Windows task, and it does not extend to every controller model.

- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Consider adaptive hardware and button layouts
For players who need different ways to hold or operate a controller, the Xbox Adaptive Controller can connect to external switches, mounts, and joysticks. Xbox also lists button-layout configuration in Xbox Accessories for the Adaptive Controller, Adaptive Joystick, Xbox Wireless Controller, Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and many third-party external joysticks. These are options to explore for a particular setup, not a one-size-fits-all solution; verify that a specific peripheral and configuration meet your needs. Xbox Accessibility Features
Microsoft’s accessibility guidance encourages developers to support players’ choice of input, including remapping where a game offers it. The available controls still vary by game, so check its own input and accessibility settings as well as the hardware. Xbox Accessibility Guideline 107

When a controller is not enough
- Use the app’s support as your guide: gamepad focus navigation works only where the app implements it.
- Check the exact model: Xbox-to-keyboard mapping documented by Xbox applies to Elite Series 2 and Adaptive Controller, not all controllers.
- Keep a mouse for pointer work: precise pointing, maps, drawing, and interfaces without gamepad navigation are better handled by a pointer or an explicitly supported mouse mode.
- Keep a keyboard for text and desktop tasks: a mapped key in a game is not the same as controlling all Windows functions with the controller.
- Confirm Xbox mode eligibility: Windows version and supported-market availability matter.
