An M.2 slot can host more than an SSD: some are designed for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards, and some systems support cellular WWAN modules. But M.2 describes a compact card-and-connector format, not a universal function. The slot in your computer may not support a card that physically fits, so check the exact system manual before buying or moving one.
What else can an M.2 slot do besides hold an SSD?
Wireless networking is one common non-storage use. For example, MSI lists a pre-installed wireless module in the M.2 Key E slot on its PRO B550M WIFI6E. ASUS specifies an E-key, 2230 Wi-Fi module for the designated Wi-Fi slot in its E500 G9 manual. These are examples of particular systems, not proof that any Key E slot accepts any Wi-Fi card.

Some supported systems can also use M.2 cellular modules for mobile broadband, often called WWAN. MSI documents 5G module support for a B-key slot on its MS-98N1 industrial board. That is a board-specific capability, not a general property of B-key slots.

M.2 cards vary in keying, dimensions, and function. The slot’s wiring and supported signals determine what it can communicate with; a card’s edge shape alone does not establish compatibility. A system can even have separate M.2 sockets for storage and wireless networking: Lenovo’s system-board illustration labels M.2 solid-state-drive slots separately from an M.2 Wi-Fi card slot.

Supermicro’s documentation for the named A4SAN board illustrates how implementations differ: it describes M-key, B-key, and E-key slots with distinct supported signals, dimensions, and functions. Its B-key cellular-related capabilities, including Nano SIM/5G, apply to that documented board and should not be generalized to other machines. See the A4SAN M.2 slots manual.
What to check before buying an M.2 card
Find the exact computer or motherboard model, then use its manual or specification page to verify the intended role of the slot. Dell’s M.2 card and slot guide explains why key, size, and functionality all matter. A slot can also impose platform-specific interface requirements: MSI’s CF19 manual, for example, describes an E-key slot with PCIe x1 and USB 2.0 support and identifies CNVi support.

- Ideal for high speed, low power storage
- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software
- 5-year limited warranty
- Slot role and key: Confirm that the manufacturer identifies the slot for the type of card you want, rather than relying on appearance.
- Signals and module requirements: Check supported interfaces and any platform-specific requirement, such as CNVi.
- Card dimensions and mounting: Match the supported module length and screw position. A 2230 card is not automatically suitable for every M.2 slot.
- Wireless installation: Check whether the host has the required antenna connections and whether the card is supported by the platform and operating system.
- WWAN installation: Verify support for the exact modem and account for SIM or eSIM arrangements, antenna connections, firmware, regional radio bands, and carrier requirements.
Wi-Fi cards and WWAN modules are not interchangeable
A compatible M.2 Key E Wi-Fi card is a possible upgrade only when the host manual confirms the slot, interface, module dimensions, and platform requirements. Cellular modules are a separate option: consider an M.2 B-key WWAN card only if the specific machine documents support for that modem and its network setup. Some installations may require suitable antenna leads; MSI’s CF19 manual illustrates antenna cables as part of a module installation, but that does not make them a universal M.2 accessory.
