What “Duplicate file name or file not found” Means in IBM-DOS

The IBM-DOS V-7.0 reference ties this RENAME error to a name already in use or a source file DOS cannot locate.

In the IBM-DOS V-7.0 error reference, “Duplicate file name or file not found” is a RENAME command error: either the new name is already in use, or DOS cannot find the file you asked it to rename. Check the source filename and drive, then make sure the proposed new name is available before trying again.

What does “Duplicate file name or file not found” mean?

The phrase appears in an IBM-DOS V-7.0 error-message reference in connection with the RENAME command. It describes two reasons the rename may fail: the destination filename already exists on the disk, or the source file cannot be found on the specified or default drive. The reference advises checking the filename and re-entering the command. IBM-DOS V-7.0 error-message reference

What should you check before renaming the file?

  1. Check the source name. Confirm that the filename you want to rename is spelled correctly and that you are using the intended drive or location.
  2. Check the new name. Make sure another file on the disk is not already using the destination filename.
  3. Enter the RENAME command again. After correcting the source or choosing an available destination name, retry the command, as the IBM-DOS reference recommends. IBM-DOS V-7.0 error-message reference

Does “duplicate” mean the files have the same contents?

No such conclusion follows from this IBM-DOS message. In this context, “duplicate” refers to a filename collision during a rename; the reference does not say that the files’ contents match. Other tools make a distinction between comparing names and comparing file hashes. For example, rclone’s dedupe command addresses duplicate names on some remote backends and can compare hashes instead; its documentation warns that deduplication can cause data loss. rclone dedupe documentation

Does the message mean the same thing in every program?

No. Error wording depends on the operating system, application and operation that produced it. The IBM-DOS explanation applies to the documented RENAME context; similar terminology elsewhere does not establish that another product uses this exact message or shares the same causes. For instance, Actian Zen v15 documents its own file-name and access status cases. Actian Zen v15 documentation

If you encountered the phrase outside IBM-DOS or a compatible rename operation, identify the program and the action that triggered it before following DOS-specific advice.
