What Dual-Purpose Function Keys Do and How to Use Them

Dual-purpose function keys assign two actions to one key. Learn how Fn, F Lock, and model-specific settings determine which action runs.

Dual-purpose function keys are single keyboard keys that can perform two actions. Usually, pressing a key by itself triggers its primary function, while holding Fn and pressing it triggers its secondary function. Some keyboards offer a lock or setting that reverses which action happens on a direct press; the exact behavior depends on the keyboard model.

How dual-purpose function keys work

A dual-purpose key has two functions assigned to one physical key. Its keycap may show both functions, often with one legend printed above or in a different color. Lenovo describes these as primary and secondary functions: on the documented keyboard, pressing the key alone calls the primary function, and holding Fn while pressing it calls the secondary one. Lenovo’s guide to dual-function keys explains that arrangement.

On many keyboards, this is how the top row works: a key may control a device feature, such as volume or screen brightness, and also send a standard F1–F12 command. The mapping and which action is primary vary by keyboard. A key’s effect can also depend on the active application or configuration.

What Fn and F Lock change

Fn commonly acts as a modifier: hold it while pressing a dual-purpose key to access its alternate command. Microsoft documents that behavior for the keyboards covered by its Fn key, F Lock key, and alternate command keys support page. Some keyboards instead have an F Lock key that switches between standard and alternate commands when pressed.

  • FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.

Fn behavior is not standardized across all devices. For example, HP says the Fn key is hardware-controlled on HP PCs, while Microsoft Surface documentation describes using Fn with top-row special keys to access function-key behavior. The available keys and their behavior depend on the keyboard or Type Cover model. See HP’s documentation on Fn and function keys and Microsoft’s Surface Type Cover guidance for those specific device families.

How to find which function a key will perform

  1. Check the keycap legends. Look for two symbols or labels on the key. The device manual can identify which is primary and which is secondary.
  2. Try the key by itself, then with Fn. Press the key once on its own, then hold Fn and press it. Check the result in a safe context, since some commands change settings or trigger application actions.
  3. Check for a lock or toggle. If the direct-press behavior is opposite of what you expect, look for an Fn Lock or F Lock key, or consult the device’s settings and manual. Do not assume a shortcut used by another keyboard will work on yours.

Can you change the default action?

Some keyboards let you switch which action runs when you press a dual-purpose key without Fn. For example, Lenovo documents Fn+Esc as the Fn Lock toggle for a particular Legion 5i model generation: with Fn Lock off, a direct press calls the primary function and Fn plus the key calls the secondary; with Fn Lock on, those actions are reversed. That shortcut is specific to the documented model family, not a universal rule. Other keyboards may use a different shortcut, a software or BIOS setting, or provide no user-accessible toggle. See the relevant Lenovo model guidance and check the documentation for your exact device.

Where to get model-specific instructions

Use the manual or manufacturer support page for the exact keyboard, laptop, or detachable keyboard model. Check both the keycap legends and the documentation: the same label does not guarantee the same default behavior across brands or models. If you are choosing a replacement keyboard, verify which action is the default on a direct press, whether a lock or comparable toggle exists, which alternate commands are supported, and compatibility with your device and operating system.
