DRAM and NAND prices rise or fall with supply and demand, but the market does not move as one. Suppliers decide which products get limited manufacturing capacity, while customer inventories, contracts, product mix and affordability shape prices in each segment. Higher prices can lift a memory maker’s revenue and margins, but the result depends on its shipments, costs and product mix—not price alone.
Why DRAM and NAND prices change
When demand for memory exceeds the bits suppliers can deliver, suppliers gain negotiating power and contract prices tend to rise. When supply is ample or buyers have enough inventory, they can push back, delay purchases or negotiate more favorable terms. The balance can change quickly as production plans and demand shift.

DRAM and NAND are distinct markets. DRAM is used for working memory in devices and servers; NAND Flash is used for persistent storage, including SSDs. Even within either market, prices vary by product category and customer. A server-memory contract is not a proxy for a desktop memory kit or a consumer SSD.

What determines supply and demand by product
AI and data-center demand
AI and cloud investment have strengthened demand for server DRAM and enterprise SSDs. TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 outlook says suppliers continue prioritizing advanced-process DRAM capacity for high-performance server products in 4Q26. It also identifies cloud-provider demand as support for enterprise SSD prices. That demand can put pressure on other buyers when manufacturers direct constrained capacity toward products serving data centers. TrendForce’s 4Q26 outlook details the segment differences.

Capacity allocation and product mix
Memory manufacturers cannot instantly make every product in whatever quantity customers want. They allocate production capacity among product types, and those choices affect how much supply remains for PCs, smartphones, graphics and consumer storage. A shift toward server DRAM, high-bandwidth memory or enterprise SSDs can tighten supply elsewhere even if total industry output is growing.
Product mix matters to suppliers as well as to buyers. Higher-value products can raise a company’s average selling price and profitability even if its total bit shipments grow only modestly. The effect depends on the products a supplier actually sells and the costs of producing them.

Inventories, contracts and bargaining power
Customers with ample inventory may postpone orders; customers worried about shortages may procure earlier or seek longer-term agreements to secure supply. Those choices affect negotiating leverage and when price changes show up in contracts. Contract pricing can therefore move differently from spot transactions or open-market quotes, and neither automatically tells you the current retail price of a particular component.

What the latest 4Q26 forecast says—and what it does not
In its outlook published 30 September 2026, TrendForce projected conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20%. These are forecasts for contract categories, not reported outcomes, retail-price predictions or a promise that every DRAM or NAND product will rise by those amounts. The full forecast also describes enterprise SSDs as a category where price growth accelerates, while inventories and limited purchasing needs constrain increases in several consumer-facing NAND categories.
The pace matters. In an earlier forecast published 31 March 2026, TrendForce projected 2Q26 conventional DRAM contract prices up 58–63% quarter over quarter and NAND Flash up 70–75%. Those were forecasts for that quarter, not realized results; they illustrate how sharply expectations changed during the year, rather than provide a current price comparison. Consumer demand and affordability later became more important constraints. TrendForce’s earlier forecast provides the dated figures.

TrendForce’s 3 July 2026 outlook described memory gains moderating as consumer demand weakened and high base effects took hold. It also reported that higher memory costs were feeding into notebook prices in 3Q26, while consumer affordability limited how much device makers could raise prices. The 3Q26 outlook discusses that pass-through. Higher component costs may lead device makers to raise prices, accept lower margins or offer lower memory and storage configurations. If products become less affordable, demand can weaken and eventually limit suppliers’ pricing power.
How memory prices affect chipmakers
A higher selling price can increase a supplier’s revenue and gross margin when shipment volumes, production costs and other factors do not offset the gain. But price is only one part of the result: bit shipments, manufacturing costs, product mix and execution all matter. Companies also have different customer contracts and product exposures, so one supplier’s results cannot establish what the whole industry earned.

Micron’s fiscal Q3 2026 results as an example
Micron reported fiscal Q3 2026 DRAM revenue of $31.3 billion, up 343% year over year. It said DRAM prices increased in the low-60s percentage range sequentially, while DRAM bit shipments rose in the low-single-digit percentage range. For NAND, Micron reported $9.9 billion in revenue, up 361% year over year; NAND prices rose in the mid-80s percentage range sequentially, while bit shipments increased in the mid-single-digit percentage range. These are Micron-reported figures for its fiscal quarter, not industry averages. Micron’s fiscal Q3 2026 prepared remarks provide the company’s figures and explanations.
Micron reported consolidated gross margin of 84.9%, up 10 percentage points sequentially. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said the improvement was driven primarily by higher pricing and also benefited from continuing strong execution and favorable mix. That is the company’s explanation of its own result; it does not show that higher prices alone caused the improvement or that every memory supplier had the same outcome. Micron’s prepared remarks contain the attribution.
Quick Recap
How to read a memory-price claim
- Identify the product: DRAM or NAND, and then the category—such as server DRAM, PC memory, client SSD or enterprise SSD.
- Check the price type: Contract forecasts, spot quotes and retail prices describe different parts of the market.
- Check the period and status: A quarter-on-quarter percentage may be a forecast or a realized result; the date and source should make that clear.
- Separate price from company performance: Revenue and gross margin also depend on bit shipments, costs, mix and execution.
- Consider the buyer response: Inventory, purchasing timing and affordability can affect both current negotiations and later demand.
