Bitcoin’s price is set by buyers and sellers, but the forces shaping their decisions—supply expectations, crypto-market momentum, investor access, risk appetite and liquidity—change over time. That is why a limited supply does not guarantee a rising price, and why a relationship that seemed useful in one period may fail in another.
How Bitcoin’s price is set
At any moment, Bitcoin trades at the price where a buyer and seller agree to transact. When buyers are willing to pay more than available sellers will accept, the price can rise; when sellers outnumber buyers at current prices, it can fall. The traded price is therefore an outcome of supply and demand—not a value dictated by any single feature of Bitcoin.

Scarcity matters, but it is not a price formula
Bitcoin’s issuance schedule makes its supply an important part of the investment story. But a limited supply does not determine short-term price changes on its own. Demand can rise or fall, and the price responds to that changing balance. Scarcity is context for the market, not a guarantee of appreciation.
Crypto-market momentum and global conditions
A 2023 study of Bitcoin trading against fiat currencies across 44 currencies in large peer-to-peer exchanges identified crypto-market momentum and volatility, as well as volatility and liquidity in global financial markets, as relevant to trading. The authors also found suggestive evidence of a global speculative crypto cycle. These are associations in the study’s setting, not a universal model of every buyer’s decision. - BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The same study found that Bitcoin trading increased when domestic currencies were unstable in some emerging and developing economies. That points to a possible transactional motive in those settings; it should not be treated as an explanation for all Bitcoin demand.
Investor access and market participation
New ways to invest can make Bitcoin accessible to people who do not buy or hold it directly. In its May 2025 Financial Stability Review, the European Central Bank (ECB) said the launch of US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) helped enable the expansion in participation it described. The ECB reported that these products had aggregate assets under management of over USD 125 billion as of May 2025. That is a dated measure of assets under management, not a current figure or proof that ETP activity alone caused price movements. ECB, “Just another crypto boom? Mind the blind spots,” May 2025

The ECB also reported that Bitcoin’s share of total crypto-asset market capitalization rose from around 40% in 2022 to over 60% in May 2025. This is Bitcoin’s share of the crypto market, not its price return. A larger share can reflect changes in Bitcoin’s value, the value of other crypto-assets, or both.

It is tempting to assume that Bitcoin always rises when borrowing costs fall, or that it behaves like “digital gold.” The evidence does not support either as a dependable rule.

Macroeconomic news does not produce a consistent response
A February 2023 Federal Reserve Bank of New York event study used intraday data to examine Bitcoin’s response to monetary and macroeconomic news. Its authors, Gianluca Benigno and Carlo Rosa, found that Bitcoin was orthogonal to that news in their sample, unlike other US asset classes. This puzzling result does not prove macroeconomic conditions never matter; it describes a particular dataset, period and research question. Correlation with other assets can change
The ECB’s 2025 analysis describes historical co-movement between Bitcoin and risky assets, including technology stocks, and almost no historical correlation with gold in its comparison. Correlations depend on the period examined: they do not establish that one asset causes another to move, nor do they guarantee that Bitcoin will diversify a portfolio in the future. Why Bitcoin predictions can be wrong
The balance of influences shifts
Supply expectations, investor interest, market momentum and trading conditions can interact, and their relative importance can change between market regimes. A forecast built around one dominant driver can fail when another becomes more influential.

Historical relationships are not fixed rules
The New York Fed study’s finding about macroeconomic news and the ECB’s account of Bitcoin’s historical co-movement with risky assets address different samples and questions. They are not necessarily contradictory: a relationship can vary by period, data frequency and the event or market behavior being measured. Neither result provides a universal forecast signal.

Volatility makes forecasts fragile
Bitcoin has experienced high volatility. In its comparison, the ECB found that Bitcoin was twice as volatile as gold and nearly three times as volatile as the S&P 500 in 2024. Sharp shifts in expectations, liquidity or investor positioning can make a forecast sensitive to the time window and assumptions used. ECB, “Just another crypto boom? Mind the blind spots,” May 2025
The ECB also points to crypto-market vulnerabilities including volatility, limited transparency, liquidity and maturity mismatches, leverage and concentration. Where positions are leveraged or assets cannot be sold readily when liabilities come due, losses can be amplified. These risks describe possible ways stress can spread; they do not predict the direction of Bitcoin’s next move.
A good fit to past prices is not proof of future accuracy
A model may explain or fit one historical period without reliably forecasting a different one. Forecasts should be judged by the sample they use, their assumptions, the variables included and whether they have been tested beyond the period used to build them. The institutional analyses cited here do not establish a dependable, universal method for predicting Bitcoin’s price.

How to evaluate a Bitcoin price claim
Before treating a forecast or explanation as persuasive, check what it actually measures:
- Time period and geography: Is the claim based on a particular market cycle, country or trading venue?
- Supply and demand: Does it explain both sides of the market, or assume scarcity alone sets the price?
- Market or macro variables: Does the analysis include crypto momentum, broader risk conditions, liquidity or investor access?
- Data and frequency: What source and sampling interval does it use? Intraday event responses and longer-term correlations answer different questions.
- Evidence type: Is the result a correlation, a causal finding, or a scenario? These are not interchangeable.
- Forecast validation: Was the model tested on a period it was not built on, or does it merely describe prices it already knows?
A claim that omits these details may still describe a possible scenario, but it should not be read as a reliable prediction. The ECB’s figures above are dated historical observations, and the New York Fed result is specific to its event-study sample—not real-time signals or investment advice.
