Interest rates can influence it by changing financial conditions and investors’ willingness to take risk, but the effect depends on what markets expected, the broader economic mood, and crypto-specific forces. Rates matter; they do not provide a reliable Bitcoin price forecast.
What drives Bitcoin’s price?
At any moment, Bitcoin trades at the price where buyers and sellers meet. Their decisions reflect expectations about future demand and supply, access to trading, available liquidity, and willingness to bear risk. Several forces can influence those decisions at once.

Risk appetite and the broader market
When investors are more willing to take risk, demand for speculative assets may rise; when financial conditions tighten or risk aversion grows, that demand can weaken. An IMF working paper published August 4, 2023, identifies a common factor in crypto prices and finds that U.S. Federal Reserve tightening reduces that factor through a risk-taking channel. The authors estimate that this common factor accounts for 80% of variation in crypto prices in their analyzed sample. That is a sample-specific result about a common crypto component, not a permanent estimate for Bitcoin alone. IMF, “The Crypto Cycle and US Monetary Policy”
Bitcoin can also move alongside other risky assets without one market necessarily causing the other to move. The BIS reported that Bitcoin fell by about 50% from its 2025 highs after technology stocks dropped. This episode illustrates how cross-asset sentiment can coincide with a large crypto-market move; it does not show that technology-stock declines always cause Bitcoin to fall. - BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Trading activity, leverage, and investor attention
Spot demand is only part of the picture. Futures trading lets investors take leveraged positions, and crowded positioning can amplify price moves when traders add or unwind exposure. A BIS study of Bitcoin and Ethereum futures found that crypto carry—the difference between futures and spot prices—was driven more by trend-chasing, smaller investors’ attention to leveraged upside, and limits on arbitrage capital than by ordinary interest-rate differences. In the study’s historical data, average crypto carry exceeded 10% per year and reached as much as 60% per year. These are historical sample estimates, not current returns or forecasts. The study also found that high carry predicted future price crashes in its sample. BIS, “Crypto carry”
Issuance and the halving
Bitcoin’s protocol reduces the block reward periodically, slowing the creation of new coins. The latest completed halving cited in official filings took place in April 2024, when the reward fell from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC per block. This changes the pace of new issuance, but it does not dictate what buyers will pay: price still depends on demand, expectations, and liquidity. A halving is a change to supply issuance, not an automatic price signal. SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s statement on spot Bitcoin ETP listing approval

Market access and flows
On January 10, 2024, the SEC approved the listing and trading of certain spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) shares in the United States. Such products give investors another route to price exposure. Their share values can be affected by investor demand, issues involving an issuer, and broader crypto-market events, according to SEC investor information. A flow occurring alongside a price change is not, by itself, proof that the flow caused the move. Visible blockchain transactions do not necessarily capture all demand or cross-border movement. An IMF study published in April 2024 finds that on-chain transaction measures and off-chain Bitcoin flows behave differently; it also reports that off-chain flows appear associated with incentives to avoid capital-flow restrictions. How interest rates can affect Bitcoin
Policy rates do not directly set Bitcoin’s price. Their influence works through financial conditions, the relative appeal of other assets, and investors’ willingness and ability to take risk.
- Expectations shift. Central-bank decisions and communications change expectations for short-term rates and broader financial conditions. Markets may react to the surprise relative to expectations, not simply to whether the announced rate is high or low.
- Risk-taking may change. Higher expected returns on conventional assets or tighter funding conditions can make speculative and leveraged positions less attractive. The IMF’s 2023 study finds that U.S. monetary tightening reduces its common crypto factor through this risk-taking channel. IMF study
- Crypto markets may feel broader policy effects. A BIS study reports that U.S. monetary-policy shocks affect crypto and traditional markets; in its studied period, crypto prices fell and stablecoin capitalization declined as policy tightened. This is evidence from the study’s period and markets, not a rule for every rate announcement. BIS, “Stablecoins, money market funds and monetary policy”
- Other forces can counteract the rate effect. Easier conditions may support risk-taking, but recession fears, changing liquidity, regulation, positioning, or crypto-specific news can offset that support. The evidence does not establish a mechanical rule that rate cuts make Bitcoin rise.
It is useful to distinguish policy rates and yields from the interest-rate differential in a futures trade. The former can affect investors’ overall allocation and risk appetite. The BIS crypto-carry study, however, finds that ordinary rate differentials explain little of the variation in crypto futures carry compared with speculative demand and constrained arbitrage. Why studies reach different conclusions
Evidence about interest rates and Bitcoin depends partly on what researchers measure and over what time horizon. A New York Fed staff report published in February 2023 used intraday event-study data and found Bitcoin orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news in its sample. In other words, the study did not find a direct short-window response to those news events. Federal Reserve Bank of New York, “The Bitcoin–Macro Disconnect”
That result does not rule out broader or slower-moving effects through risk appetite and financial conditions, which the IMF and BIS studies examine. An announcement-window response and a multi-period change in a common crypto factor are different questions. The findings therefore do not establish one universal interest-rate effect or coefficient for Bitcoin.

How to assess a Bitcoin price move
When explaining a particular episode, check several possible influences rather than attributing the move to one headline:
- Rate expectations: Did expected policy, a policy surprise, or real yields change?
- Risk sentiment: Did equity markets, volatility, or broader funding conditions change at the same time?
- Crypto positioning: Was futures carry elevated, or was leverage exposed to forced unwinding?
- Access and flows: Did institutional products or cross-border flows change, and are the measures being compared alike?
- Supply news: Did the issuance schedule change, and was that change already anticipated?
These questions help organize an explanation; they do not turn market data into a dependable forecast. The SEC’s 2024 statement made the distinction explicit: SEC Chair Gary Gensler said, “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin.” Approval of product listings is not an endorsement of Bitcoin itself. SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s statement, January 10, 2024
