Start with your player association or union: ask whether it offers a current adviser directory, referral program, or financial-education service. If you play in the NFL, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) has individual and institutional adviser-program routes, but a listing is a screening resource—not an endorsement. Build a shortlist, interview several candidates, verify each person’s status and background, and get services, fees, and authority over your money in writing before you hire anyone.
Start with your player association
Ask your association or union whether it currently offers an adviser program, directory, referral service, or financial-education resources. Confirm eligibility and access directly: programs and rules are specific to each association, and an NFLPA process should not be assumed to apply to another sport or country.

If you are an NFL player
The NFLPA describes two routes: its individual registered-adviser program and an institutional program that provides a point of contact to help identify an adviser or team. Access to the registered-adviser list is limited; the NFLPA says active and former players and certified contract advisers can access it, while prospective players may request information. Contact the association to confirm current access and process. NFLPA financial-adviser program information and its registered-adviser-list access FAQ describe these routes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe NFLPA’s individual-program application page states that its initial application period for the 2027 program has ended and directs applicants to check back for the next cycle. Its stated criteria include a bachelor’s degree, a CFP and/or CFA designation, at least eight years of licensed experience, required fidelity bonding and professional-liability coverage, and criteria concerning fraud-related history, pending customer complaints or litigation, and custody of player funds. These are program criteria, not universal legal requirements for advisers. Check the current NFLPA application page for updated status and requirements.

If you play another sport
Ask your own association for current resources and eligibility rules. The NFLPA’s directory and screening criteria do not establish that another league or sport has a comparable program.
Build a shortlist, then compare candidates
Do not hire based on a single referral or a program listing alone. The NFLPA recommends interviewing several candidates and comparing their backgrounds, experience, qualifications, client base, and fees. Its guidance, “What should I look for in a financial advisor?”, also advises asking whether an adviser works alone or with a team and who will be responsible for your account.

Ask each candidate to identify everyone who may advise you or handle your work, including staff and outside attorneys, accountants, tax specialists, or insurance professionals. Find out what each person will do, whether they are paid separately, and how decisions and communications will be coordinated. Verify the backgrounds and credentials of the people who will actually serve you—not only the lead adviser.

Verify credentials, registrations, and background
Ask for each adviser’s exact legal and professional status, the services they are qualified to provide, and their current registrations in the relevant jurisdiction. A designation, license, and registration are not interchangeable: they may authorize or describe different work. NFLPA program rules distinguish among investment advisers, broker-dealers, insurance professionals, and attorneys or accountants, whose permitted program scope can differ. Check status and disciplinary records with the regulator responsible for the person’s role and location; ask the adviser to explain any complaints, litigation, regulatory actions, bankruptcies, or disciplinary events.

The NFLPA’s May 2023 regulations and code of conduct expressly disclaim endorsement and say the association makes no representation about a listed adviser’s skill, honesty, or competence. Treat registration as one screening signal, then assess references, current standing, experience, and fit for your needs.
Understand the fees, duties, and control of your assets
Ask for fees in both dollars and percentages where applicable, how they are calculated, who receives them, and what services they cover. Ask whether the adviser, firm, or an affiliate can receive commissions, referral payments, or other compensation from products or third parties. Request a written explanation of conflicts and how they are managed. Compare the full cost and service model—not just a headline percentage.

Before signing, read the written agreement for the services provided, reporting frequency, fee terms, termination process, and the adviser’s authority. Under NFLPA program rules, registered advisers must provide a written client agreement describing services and fees and itemized statements at least quarterly. The rules also prohibit specified conflicts and require advance written disclosure of certain referral compensation. Those requirements apply to the NFLPA program; ask other advisers what rules govern their relationship with you.
Ask who holds your assets, what authority the adviser has to trade or move money, and how you will receive statements. Do not transfer money to an adviser personally in place of using an appropriately qualified custodian. NFLPA rules prohibit a registered adviser from having custody of player funds unless the adviser is a qualified custodian. An adviser should explain any proposed arrangement and the safeguards in place before you authorize it.

Ask how the adviser’s duties apply to the specific services and investments being proposed. NFLPA registered advisers acknowledge fiduciary duties to player-clients under the program rules; that program language is not a substitute for understanding the adviser’s legal duties in your own relationship. Be wary of guarantees about investment results. Ask for risks, fees, and assumptions to be explained clearly and in writing.

A useful plan should start with your circumstances rather than a product recommendation. Discuss how the adviser will address:
- Cash flow and liquidity: irregular earnings, near-term spending needs, liabilities, and reserves.
- Investments: diversification, risk tolerance, time horizon, objectives, and how recommendations will be assessed against suitable benchmarks and periods.
- Taxes and professional support: tax planning and how the adviser will coordinate with your tax professional.
- Protection and long-term planning: insurance, estate planning, retirement, and relevant benefits available through your sport.
- Decision-making: which choices require your approval, how recommendations are documented, and how conflicts are disclosed.
These topics also appear in the NFLPA program’s suitability inquiries, which include assets and liquidity, liabilities, diversification, risk tolerance, objectives, financial sophistication, and relevant tax, estate, insurance, and retirement matters. The association’s program rules are a useful prompt for questions, not a substitute for a plan tailored to your circumstances.
Questions to ask in the interview
- How many current or former professional athletes do you advise, and what services will you personally provide?
- What licenses and designations do you hold, and where can I verify your current status?
- Have you or your firm had regulatory actions, customer complaints, litigation, bankruptcies, or disciplinary events I should know about?
- Who will make recommendations and handle day-to-day service? Can I meet and check the credentials of each team member?
- How do you charge, and do you or an affiliate receive commissions, referral fees, or other third-party payments?
- What exactly is included in the written agreement, and how can I end the relationship?
- Who has custody of my assets, and what authority will you have to trade or move money?
- How will the plan account for irregular career earnings, liquidity, taxes, insurance, estate planning, retirement, and benefits relevant to my sport?
- How will you report investment risks and performance, and what benchmarks and time periods will you use?
- Which decisions require my approval, and how do you document recommendations and conflicts?
These are interview prompts, not individualized legal or financial advice. For tax, legal, or insurance questions, clarify which professional is responsible and how that person will coordinate with the adviser.
