What Does “Write Protect Error” Mean?

A write protect error reports that storage was treated as read-only. The message alone does not identify the cause; start by checking the affected media and any physical lock.

A “write protect error” means a device or operating system refused a write because the storage media is being treated as write-protected. It describes what happened, not the underlying cause: the message alone does not tell you whether a physical lock, a host setting, or another condition is responsible.

What the error says

Microsoft defines Windows status STATUS_MEDIA_WRITE_PROTECTED (0xC00000A2) as: “The disk cannot be written to because it is write-protected.” The status identifies why the attempted write was refused; it does not diagnose why protection is active. See Microsoft Learn’s [MS-ERREF] NTSTATUS Values.

You may see related wording such as “the disk is write protected” or “write-protection of USB.” The exact phrasing varies, but the practical meaning is that the attempted save, copy, edit, or other write did not go through.

What might be causing it?

A physical lock on removable media

Some memory media have a physical lock slider or lever. Sony says the Memory Stick error covered by its support guidance appears when the media is locked; its instruction is to move the slider to the unlock position. That guidance applies to the specified Memory Stick products, not every storage device. See Sony USA Support.

For the Kodak PIXPRO FZ53, Kodak says a locked SD or SDHC card can trigger a “Write Protect” error. Its guidance is to move the card’s lever from LOCK to UNLOCK, reinsert the card, and power the camera back on. This is specific to that camera scenario, rather than a universal fix for all cards or drives. See Kodak PIXPRO Support.

A host setting or policy

Write access can also depend on the computer, camera, or other host using the media. A 2025 Microsoft Q&A discussion describes a case involving removable-media policy and BitLocker. It illustrates that host configuration may be relevant, but a community discussion is not an authoritative diagnosis or a guaranteed fix for other devices. See Microsoft Q&A.

What to check first

  1. Identify the affected device and media. Note whether the message comes from a USB drive, memory card, camera, or another device.
  2. Check for a physical lock only if the media has one. If it does, follow the instructions for that specific media and device. Do not assume every card or drive has a lock switch.
  3. See whether the problem follows the media. If practical, check whether the same device is write-protected on another host, or whether multiple storage devices have the same problem on the original host. This helps distinguish a media-specific issue from one that may involve host configuration; it does not by itself prove the cause.
  4. Protect important files before destructive troubleshooting. If the files are readable and matter to you, preserve them before attempting a format or other action that could erase data.

What the message does not establish

  • It does not, by itself, prove that the storage device has failed.
  • It does not establish that a particular command, registry change, or repair utility will remove the protection.
  • It does not identify one universal fix. The appropriate next step depends on the media, any physical lock, and the host or policy environment.
