A website NFC tag is a physical tag programmed with a web address. When a compatible phone reads it, the phone may show a prompt or notification to open that link. The tag stores the address; the website itself remains hosted online.
What a website NFC tag is
“Website NFC tag” is descriptive wording, not a distinct NFC standard term. In everyday use, it generally means an NFC tag carrying a URL, usually as a URI record in an NDEF message. NDEF is a format for storing and exchanging data on NFC tags; for this use, the important data is the web address.
NFC is short-range communication. Android’s overview says NFC typically requires a distance of 4 cm or less to initiate a connection. When a phone reads a tag, the stored information determines the action the device can offer or perform; the NFC Forum specifications describe an NFC Forum Device reading a tag’s NDEF message and initiating an action according to its contents.
What happens when a phone reads one
Reading the tag does not guarantee that a web page opens immediately. The phone’s operating system, version, settings, and the destination link’s associations affect what happens next.

Android
Android reads NDEF data and recognizes URI payloads. According to Android’s NFC documentation, scans of tags containing HTTP or HTTPS links invoke ACTION_VIEW starting in Android 16. The same documentation says Android 17 surfaces an “open link” notification and requires explicit user interaction to trigger the intent. These are version-specific behaviors, not a guarantee that every Android phone opens a page automatically.
iPhone
Apple’s background tag-reading system checks an NDEF message for a URI record. For Universal Links, the iPhone launches or foregrounds the associated app after the user taps the notification. If no associated app is installed, the link opens in Safari, according to Apple’s background tag-reading documentation.

Repeated scans and browser behavior
The result of touching the tag more than once can depend on the browser. The NFC Forum’s cross-platform UX guidance describes Safari opening a tab on the first tap and reloading it on later taps, while Chrome may open a new tab for each touch. Treat this as browser-dependent guidance, not a promise for every current browser version.
Does the tag contain the website?
No. The tag contains the URL, not the website’s pages, images, or hosting. A phone uses that URL to request the site online, so the page still depends on the destination being available and the phone having a suitable internet connection.

Do you need an app, and will it work on any phone?
A website URL on an NFC tag does not inherently require a dedicated app to be stored or read. The phone needs NFC support and must handle the tag’s NDEF URI record, but the exact prompt and link handling vary by platform and version. Some links may be associated with an installed app; on iPhone, Apple says a Universal Link can open its associated app after the user taps the notification, or Safari if no associated app is installed.
Is it safe to tap a website NFC tag?
Not automatically. Because the tag carries a URL, it can point to an untrusted or misleading destination. Check the displayed address before opening it, especially if the tag is in a public place or appears unexpectedly. Do not enter passwords or payment details unless you have verified that the destination is legitimate.

How to make a website NFC tag
To make one, use a writable NFC tag or sticker and write the intended website URL as an NDEF URI record. Check that the item is writable and suitable for your phone and intended use. The tag’s storage must fit the URL, and a lock setting may prevent later edits; confirm both details in the product specifications before choosing a tag. No particular chip, brand, app, or model is required by the basic URL-on-tag concept.
