Turn on automatic updates wherever your operating system and apps offer them, but do not assume one switch covers every program or device. For a personal device, enable updates in the operating system and in each relevant application. For a business, automatic deployment is only one part of patch management: software must also be inventoried, prioritized, installed, and checked for success.
What automatic software updates do—and what they do not do
An update changes installed software, which can include firmware, an operating system, or an application. Updates may fix security or functionality problems or add capabilities. NIST describes patching as preventive maintenance that can reduce risks such as compromise, data breaches, and operational disruption in its SP 800-40 Rev. 4 guidance.
Automatic updates let a product download or install updates without requiring you to start each one manually. The exact behavior varies: a product may install updates immediately, wait for a schedule, or notify you before installation or a restart. Enabling a setting in one place does not necessarily update other applications, devices, or services.
How to enable automatic updates on a personal device
There is no universal menu path: it depends on the device, operating-system version, and application. Use the update controls provided by the maker of each product rather than relying on a generic “update everything” switch.

- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
- Update the operating system. Open the device’s system settings and look for a section named Software Update, Windows Update, System Update, or similar. Turn on automatic downloading or installation if offered, and review any options for scheduled installs or restarts.
- Check applications separately. Enable automatic updates in each app’s settings or in the official app store or package manager used to install it. Some desktop applications have their own updater; others are updated through the operating system’s store.
- Include devices with their own software. Routers, printers, and other connected devices may have separate firmware-update controls in their settings or management apps. Check the device maker’s instructions for the exact model.
- Allow the update to finish. Keep the device connected to power and, where needed, a reliable network. Complete requested restarts; an update that is downloaded but awaiting installation or restart may not yet be active.
- Verify the result. Return to the update screen or app’s update settings and check its status or update history. If an update failed or remains pending, follow the product’s recovery steps or retry when the device is available.
Automatic installation can reduce the time a device remains without a fix, but it can also interrupt work or expose a compatibility problem. Where the device offers scheduling, choose a time when a restart or temporary service interruption is acceptable. Avoid disabling updates indefinitely to prevent interruptions; instead, address the cause and verify that updates resume.
Why automatic updates are not a complete management plan
For an organization, a fleet-wide “on” setting cannot ensure that every product is covered or that deployment succeeded. NIST defines enterprise patch management as identifying, prioritizing, acquiring, installing, and verifying patches, updates, and upgrades throughout the organization. Its SP 800-40 Rev. 4 treats this as an ongoing lifecycle, not a one-time configuration.

USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors; 1MB=1,000,000 bytes]
- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
- Sleek, durable metal casing
- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
- Inventory: Know which software and devices are in use, including versions and systems that may not connect regularly.
- Prioritize: Consider the update’s security or operational importance, the organization’s exposure, and the consequences of leaving it unapplied.
- Acquire and deploy: Use an established process and suitable tools to distribute updates, including to remote or intermittently connected systems.
- Verify: Confirm installation and identify failures, devices that did not report, and updates still awaiting a restart.
These steps matter because patching can consume staff and system resources and may reduce service availability. NIST’s SP 1800-31 implementation guide discusses routine and emergency patching, inventory, alternatives to patching, and security for patch-management systems.
Balance deployment speed with operational risk
Delaying a security update can leave a period in which a known vulnerability remains unaddressed. Deploying too broadly without enough validation can also cause disruptions. NIST summarized the trade-off in an August 27, 2025 article: “Once a vendor detects a vulnerability in its software, deploying a patch quickly reduces the window of opportunity for attackers, but it increases the risk that the less thoroughly tested patch might disrupt an organization’s operations.”

A practical organizational process can match testing and rollout to the update’s urgency and the potential impact of failure. For routine updates, teams may validate on a limited group before expanding deployment, and schedule changes around service needs. For urgent updates, they may shorten that process while still monitoring results and preparing a recovery plan. These are ways to apply NIST’s considerations, not a single schedule that fits every organization.
When an update cannot be applied promptly, assess the specific exposure and available mitigations rather than treating the delay as harmless. NIST SP 1800-31 discusses alternatives such as isolation and workarounds, as well as emergency patching. Record the decision, who or what remains affected, and when the issue will be reviewed again.

Check whether automatic updates are working
- Review operating-system and application update status or history rather than assuming that an enabled setting means installation succeeded.
- Investigate repeated failures, devices that have not checked in, and updates waiting for a restart.
- For a managed fleet, compare deployment results with the software inventory so missing or unsupported systems are visible.
- After a disruptive update, use the product’s documented recovery or rollback process and reassess deployment before expanding it.
NIST’s older 2012 summary of enterprise guidance also notes practical concerns including broken applications, unexpected reboots, and mobile data use. Those are reasons to plan timing and monitor outcomes, not reasons to leave systems unpatched indefinitely. The summary describes phased deployment of patch-management tools and balancing security with usability and availability; it is context, not current instructions for a particular device or operating system.
