Common categories are 150 mm (about 6 inches), 200 mm (about 8 inches), and 300 mm (about 12 inches). It describes the wafer, not the size of an individual chip.
What is a semiconductor wafer?
A wafer is a thin disc sliced from a high-purity semiconductor ingot. Silicon is widely used, though other materials, including gallium arsenide, are also used. Integrated circuits are formed on the wafer, which is later separated into individual chips.

The ingot’s diameter determines the wafer’s nominal size. In ordinary usage, “wafer size” refers to this diameter, usually expressed in millimetres.
Common wafer diameters
| Nominal diameter | Approximate inch name |
|---|---|
| 150 mm | 6 inch |
| 200 mm | 8 inch |
| 300 mm | 12 inch |
The inch names are convenient approximations, not separate measurements. SEMI’s FAQ lists silicon wafer sizes including 2, 3, 100, 125, 150, 200, 300, and 450 mm: SEMI standards FAQ.

What does a larger wafer size change?
A larger-diameter wafer has more surface area and can hold more chip dies. But diameter alone does not tell you how many usable chips a wafer will produce. Die dimensions, how dies are arranged near the wafer edge, and manufacturing yield all affect the result. There is no single chip-count figure that applies to every wafer of a given diameter.
Wafer diameter also does not determine how advanced a chip is by itself. SEMI’s 2021 supply-chain comments described advanced small-geometry designs using 300 mm wafers while noting that important devices were also made on 200 mm and 150 mm wafers. That is context from 2021, not a current market-share ranking or a rule that every advanced chip must use a 300 mm wafer: SEMI’s 2021 comments.

Does nominal wafer size equal its exact measured diameter?
Not necessarily. “300 mm,” for example, is a nominal category; processing such as edge trimming can make an individual wafer’s measured diameter differ. SEMI’s guide for a specific class of nominal 300 mm thin wafers on tape frames gives a maximum diameter of 301 mm and no fixed minimum. Those figures apply to that guide’s stated scope, not to all wafer sizes, materials, or specifications: SEMI 3D3 guide listing.

A wafer is the larger disc used as a manufacturing substrate. A chip, or die, is one of the individual pieces separated from that wafer after fabrication. So a “300 mm chip” would be a misunderstanding in this context: 300 mm refers to the wafer’s nominal diameter, not to the width of each resulting chip.
