Before sending crypto, verify the recipient, the full destination address, the asset, the network, the amount and the transaction details shown for signing. A confirmed transfer may be impossible to reverse: Bitcoin recipients can refund a payment, but a wallet or support team cannot be relied on to retrieve funds sent to the wrong place.
Why the checks have to happen before sending
Crypto transfers do not have a dependable undo button. Ethereum.org states, “A transaction sent on Ethereum is irreversible.” Bitcoin.org explains, “A Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed, it can only be refunded by the person receiving the funds.” A refund therefore depends on the recipient, not a reversal mechanism.

That makes the useful safety model a series of checkpoints before you submit or sign. A test transfer can provide an additional check, but it does not replace verifying the details of the larger transfer.

- Confirm who requested the transfer. If the instruction is new, unexpected or changed, verify it with the intended recipient through an independent, trusted channel. Do not treat a message containing payment details as proof of identity.
- Get the destination from a trusted source. Use the address supplied by the original recipient or a carefully established address-book entry. Avoid copying it from transaction history, where a lookalike may have been planted.
- Compare the full address. Check every character, including the middle—not only the first and last few. A similar-looking address is not the same destination.
- Match the asset and network. Select the asset you intend to send and a network supported by the receiving wallet. Similar-looking address formats do not mean two networks are interchangeable. Trezor warns, “If you select the wrong network, you could lose your funds.”
- Check the amount and sending wallet. Confirm the amount, including any relevant fee shown in the transfer flow, and make sure you are sending from the intended wallet or account.
- Review the final transaction details. Before confirming, compare the destination and transaction information displayed by the wallet or exchange with the details you verified. For a smart-contract transaction, read the signing message rather than approving it automatically.
Choose a safeguard for the risk you need to reduce
| Safeguard | What it helps check | When it applies | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verified address-book entry or original recipient source | Whether you copied the intended destination | Before entering or selecting the address | An entry must be established carefully; a saved address is not proof that a new payment request is legitimate. |
| Full-address comparison | Lookalike or poisoned addresses | Before submission or signing | Do not compare only the first and last characters. |
| Network and asset check | Sending an asset over a network the recipient cannot use | Before submission | The receiving wallet must support the selected network. |
| Small test transfer | Whether a new destination and network appear to work | Before sending the remainder | It costs another transaction fee and may be impractical because of withdrawal minimums or workflow requirements. |
| Hardware wallet on-device review | Unauthorized signing and destination details shown for confirmation | At signing | It does not make an incorrect transfer reversible; compare the device display with the intended destination. |
Use a test transfer when its cost is justified
For a new destination or a large transfer, consider sending a small amount first. Wait until it appears in the intended destination before sending the remainder. This can reveal a wrong address or network before more funds are committed.

A test is not free or universally practical: it involves an additional transaction fee, and an exchange may impose a minimum withdrawal. The appropriate amount depends on the service and the transaction; there is no universal minimum established here. Do not confuse an optional test transfer with an exchange’s ownership-verification procedure, which may require an exact requested amount.
Watch for address poisoning
In an address-poisoning attempt, an attacker sends a low-value or zero-value transaction from an address resembling one the user has previously used. The aim is to make the lookalike appear in transaction history so the user copies it later. Transaction history is therefore a risky source for a destination, even when the address looks familiar.

MetaMask says its wallet can warn about a new destination and show a blocking warning when a destination closely matches an address in the user’s history. These are MetaMask-specific features, not a guarantee available in every wallet. Regardless of wallet, use a verified contact or the original recipient source and check the full address, including its middle characters.
Review smart-contract approvals and hardware-wallet prompts
A transaction may ask you to authorize a smart contract, not merely send a payment. Read the transaction message on the wallet before signing, and limit token-spending permissions to what is necessary. If the request or permission is unclear, do not approve it until you understand what it allows.

A crypto hardware wallet can keep private keys offline and add an on-device confirmation step. MetaMask notes that most hardware wallets require confirmation of the destination on the device; Ethereum.org names Ledger and Trezor as examples. Compare the destination shown on the device with the address you intended to use. The device is a signing checkpoint, not a recovery service, and a model-specific comparison or current price is not established here.

When a transfer involves a business, shared wallet or custody process, verify more than the address. Check the intended recipient, amount, destination, asset, network and specific wallet or sub-wallet, along with the relevant instruction or approval record. Follow the organization’s required approvals before signing.

For some shared-control situations, Bitcoin.org identifies escrow and multisignature wallets as possible arrangements. They are context-dependent options, not universal requirements; choose controls appropriate to who must authorize the transfer and the way the funds are managed.
If crypto was sent to the wrong destination
Do not assume that an exchange, wallet provider or support agent can reverse a confirmed on-chain transfer. Contact the service involved promptly if a platform or custody workflow is part of the transaction, and provide the transaction details it requests, but recovery is not guaranteed. For a Bitcoin payment, only the recipient can refund it. Avoid anyone claiming they can recover funds for a guaranteed fee or asking for your recovery phrase or private keys.
