It can limit the frames the game presents to the display—often to the monitor’s refresh rate—but it does not make your GPU render faster. Turning it off may raise the FPS counter while allowing torn images.
FPS and refresh rate are different
FPS measures how quickly a game produces frames. Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), measures how often a display refreshes. V-Sync coordinates when those frames are presented with the display’s refresh cycle.
For example, a 60 Hz display refreshes 60 times per second. With V-Sync enabled, frame presentation is commonly synchronized to that cadence, so a game running fast enough may show about 60 FPS. A 120 Hz or 144 Hz display has a different refresh cadence; 60 FPS is not a universal V-Sync cap. The exact behavior depends on the game, graphics API, driver, buffering, and display setup. Intel explains V-Sync settings and refresh synchronization; NVIDIA describes how its control-panel setting synchronizes frame rate with monitor refresh.
At 60 Hz, each refresh interval is about 16.67 milliseconds (1 ÷ 60 of a second). That interval is not a measurement of V-Sync’s input delay.

Why can the FPS counter fall when you turn V-Sync on?
With V-Sync off, the game can render frames without waiting for the display’s refresh cadence. It may report more FPS than the monitor can show as complete, separate refreshes. For instance, NVIDIA uses 120 FPS on a 60 Hz display as an example of a situation where tearing can occur with V-Sync disabled. The higher counter indicates more frames rendered, not that the 60 Hz display is showing 120 complete refreshes each second. NVIDIA’s V-Sync reference explains the synchronization behavior.
Intel says that disabling V-Sync allows virtually unlimited FPS, but makes tearing, jerkiness, or stuttering more likely depending on the configuration. Turning it on can therefore make the counter drop from an uncapped value to a value near the display’s refresh rate. That is a presentation limit, not a sign that V-Sync increased the GPU’s rendering capability or damaged performance. Intel’s support article was last reviewed September 15, 2025.

What are the trade-offs of V-Sync?
| Setting or technology | What it does | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| V-Sync on | Synchronizes frame presentation with display refresh to reduce tearing. | Can constrain presented FPS; depending on implementation and performance, it may add input delay or stutter. |
| V-Sync off | Lets the game render without waiting for the display’s refresh cadence. | May allow a higher FPS counter, but can produce tearing when frames arrive during a refresh. |
| Adaptive V-Sync or Enhanced Sync | Vendor-specific driver features that change synchronization behavior to address some traditional V-Sync trade-offs. | Behavior and availability vary by vendor, system, and supported configuration; results are not guaranteed to be identical. |
| FreeSync or G-SYNC (variable refresh rate) | Allows a compatible display to adjust refresh rate to match the GPU’s changing frame rate within a supported range. | Requires compatible hardware and configuration; check the GPU, display, connection, and supported range. |
Input delay and stutter are possible, not fixed outcomes
Traditional V-Sync can add input delay because presentation is coordinated with the refresh cycle, but the amount varies by implementation and setup. The available documentation does not establish one general input-lag figure. Nor is stutter inevitable: what happens depends in part on whether the game can sustain the display’s cadence.
NVIDIA’s Adaptive V-Sync example describes performance falling to 45 or 30 FPS below a 60 FPS cap. Those are example frame rates, not guaranteed steps for every PC. NVIDIA says Adaptive V-Sync unlocks frame rate below the cap and locks again as performance recovers, aiming to reduce stutter while minimizing tearing. AMD describes Enhanced Sync as designed to reduce latency and stutter compared with traditional V-Sync. These are vendor descriptions, not promises of the same result on every system. NVIDIA explains Adaptive V-Sync; AMD describes Enhanced Sync.

Should you use V-Sync with FreeSync or G-SYNC?
FreeSync and G-SYNC are variable-refresh-rate (VRR) technologies, distinct from traditional V-Sync. Rather than requiring the display to refresh at one fixed cadence, VRR can adjust its refresh rate to match changing frame rates within the supported range. On a compatible setup, that can reduce tearing or stutter as performance varies.
Compatibility depends on the GPU, monitor, connection, configuration, and the display’s supported refresh range. Check the specifications for both devices before relying on VRR. NVIDIA outlines G-SYNC technology; AMD’s FreeSync overview describes its variable-refresh technology.

How to choose a setting
- Try V-Sync on if tearing is distracting and you prefer a more coherent image over an uncapped FPS counter.
- Try V-Sync off if responsiveness is your priority and you can tolerate possible tearing. Compare how the game feels and looks on your own system.
- Check VRR support if your GPU and display may support FreeSync or G-SYNC; confirm compatibility and the supported range rather than assuming the feature is active.
- Check driver options if traditional V-Sync’s behavior is not a good fit. Adaptive V-Sync and Enhanced Sync are vendor-specific alternatives, so consult the relevant GPU documentation.
