It is distinct from the U.S. Space Force, which organizes, trains, and equips space professionals and provides forces to combatant commands. As of the latest cited updates in April 2026, USSPACECOM’s headquarters transition to Redstone Arsenal was underway; the available milestones do not establish that the entire command had moved.
What is U.S. Space Command responsible for?
USSPACECOM’s mission is to plan, execute, and integrate military spacepower into multi-domain global operations with allies and partners to deter aggression, defend national interests, and defeat threats when necessary. In practical terms, it employs joint forces, delivers space capabilities to joint and combined forces, and protects and defends the space domain. The command’s official mission statement describes that operational role.

The command describes its “astrographic area of responsibility” as extending from the Kármán Line to the Moon and beyond. Its FAQ places the Kármán Line at 62 miles (100 km) above mean sea level. This is USSPACECOM’s stated boundary description, not a claim that it owns or controls everything within that region. The FAQ provides the command’s description.
How is U.S. Space Command different from the Space Force?
The two organizations are related but have different institutional jobs. The Space Force is an armed service that organizes, trains, and equips space professionals and supplies forces. USSPACECOM is a combatant command that employs joint forces in operations. Forces and space capabilities also support other combatant commands. USSPACECOM’s FAQ explains the distinction.

How is the command organized?
USSPACECOM is joint: its forces and components draw on multiple military services rather than only the Space Force. The command’s FAQ identifies the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Space Force. A 2025 command presentation chart also depicts service components and joint organizations; because the chart’s revision date is not stated in the retrieved material, treat its specific names and reporting lines as a snapshot rather than a guaranteed current org chart. See the 2025 presentation.

The same chart shows staff functions from J0 through J8, covering chief-of-staff and support, human capital, intelligence, global operations, logistics, strategy/plans/policy, digital superiority, and capabilities and resources, as well as development and training. It also depicts the Combined Space Operations Center, National Space Defense Center, Missile Warning Center, Joint Overhead Persistent IR Center, and Joint Navigation Warfare Center. The chart indicates the kinds of staff and operational organizations involved; it should not be used alone to confirm today’s names or reporting relationships.

Where is U.S. Space Command headquartered?
The location is in transition. USSPACECOM’s FAQ lists Colorado Springs, Colorado, as the headquarters and describes personnel and functions at Peterson Space Force Base and Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado, Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. It also says the command’s final size is being determined through a manpower analysis. The FAQ’s location and size information should be read alongside the dated Redstone updates.
In an April 15, 2026 update, the command reported that personnel from its J2 Intelligence Directorate had relocated to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, and referred to Redstone as the designated headquarters location. On April 29, 2026, it announced operational control of a Redstone facility for the Joint Intelligence Support Element, describing it as the first operational element of the headquarters there. Those announcements establish initial activity and a transition milestone, not completion of a full headquarters move. See the command’s April 15 update and April 29 facility announcement for the dated details.
