“Trump social media” is a descriptive phrase for Donald Trump’s social-media activity, the accounts associated with him, and the platforms where those communications appear. It is not the formal name of a single service. Truth Social is the most directly Trump-associated platform in the records discussed here, but the phrase can also refer to Trump’s activity or accounts elsewhere.

What does “Trump social media” mean?

The phrase can refer to three related things: Trump’s posts, the accounts used to publish them, and the social-media platforms carrying those posts. Its meaning depends on which account, platform, and period a speaker has in mind.

That distinction matters: Truth Social is a platform, while a personal profile or an official government account is an account on a platform. The phrase “Trump social media” is broader than Truth Social alone; the sources cited here do not establish it as a formally defined service or a single product name.

What is Truth Social?

Truth Social is a social-media platform operated by Trump Media & Technology Group. The company’s SEC filing says it began operations on February 8, 2021, and began the platform’s initial launch in the first quarter of 2022. Trump Media & Technology Group’s filing describes the operator relationship and launch period.

The company’s 2025 annual report also describes Truth Social as a social-media platform. Its descriptions of the platform’s moderation system and intended public conversation are the company’s own characterizations, not independent confirmation of how the service performs in practice. The 2025 Form 10-K provides that company account.

Does the phrase have an official definition?

The sources cited here do not establish one universal, formal definition of “Trump social media.” A related official term appears in a 2020 executive order: for that order’s purposes, “online platform” meant “any website or application that allows users to create and share content or engage in social networking, or any general search engine.” That wording is specific to the order; it is not a universal definition of social media. Read the archived executive order.

Personal profiles and government accounts are different

A personal Trump profile should not be confused with an account representing a government office. The Donald J. Trump Presidential Library says social-media content was transferred as part of the official records of the Trump administration. It also explains that institutional accounts such as @WhiteHouse, @POTUS, @VP, and @PressSec transfer to incoming administrations. The Presidential Library’s archived social media page describes the distinction and archival context.

When discussing an old post, identify the account and administration or date where possible. The name of an account alone does not tell readers whether it was personal or institutional, or who controlled it at the time.

How to understand claims about posting rules

A Trump Media SEC filing described a past arrangement for non-political communications from Trump’s personal profile: those posts were to appear first on Truth Social and not be repeated on another platform for six hours. The filing also described an exception for posts Trump deemed political-related and said the exclusivity term ended February 2, 2025. Treat this as a historical arrangement stated in that filing, not as a current rule. See the SEC filing describing the terms.
