The spinning rainbow circle on a MacBook is macOS’s wait cursor. It means the Mac is loading something or has been delayed for more than a few seconds. It does not say what is causing the delay, and it does not by itself point to a hardware fault.
What Apple calls the spinning rainbow circle
Apple’s support article “Pointers in macOS” lists this cursor as the Wait (spinning disk) cursor, described as “Items are loading.” The same guide also describes it as the wait cursor that “Appears when a delay of more than a few seconds occurs.” Informal names such as “spinning beach ball,” “spinning wheel,” or “Mac wait cursor” refer to the same symbol, not to a separate error.

Because the cursor only signals waiting, the same icon can appear when an app is busy with a large task, when a file is opening, or when an app has stopped responding. Looking at the cursor alone will not tell you which one is happening.
What to do when the cursor appears
In most cases the right response depends on whether the wait ends by itself.

- If the cursor disappears within a few moments, keep working and save your documents.
- If one app stays unresponsive, try to close it and reopen it.
- If the app will not quit, force quit it (see the Activity Monitor steps below).
- If the problem continues after that, restart the Mac and install any pending software updates.
Apple’s guidance for apps that stop responding follows the same order. If simpler steps fail, Apple suggests deleting and reinstalling the app. Apple warns that deleting an app can remove data stored in it, so back up anything important first.
Using Activity Monitor to find the stuck process
Activity Monitor shows which process is holding up your work. Apple marks an unresponsive process with “(Not Responding)” in the process list.

- Open Finder, go to Applications > Utilities, and open Activity Monitor.
- Look in the process list for an entry marked “(Not Responding).”
- Select that process, then click the Stop button in the toolbar.
- Choose Quit first. Quit lets the process exit when it is safe to do so.
- Only if Quit does nothing, repeat the steps and choose Force Quit.
Force Quit stops the process immediately. Apple warns that this can lose data in files that are still open, and it can cause problems for other apps or processes that depend on the one you stopped. Use it only after a normal quit has failed.

The wait cursor is a status signal, not a diagnosis. Apple’s documentation does not connect its appearance to a specific cause, and it does not give typical durations or how often it appears. A rainbow wheel that clears in seconds is usually normal activity. A wheel that repeats across several apps, or that does not clear after closing and reopening an app, is the point where a restart and software updates become the next checks.
