Register.si’s terms define a .si domain holder as a natural or legal person and do not state a Slovenia-residency requirement in the cited provisions. You still need to register through a registrar and choose a name that is available, not reserved, valid under the registry’s rules and consistent with applicable law.
What does .si stand for?
.si is the country-code top-level domain for Slovenia. IANA identifies ARNES as its manager and lists the domain’s registration date as 1 April 1992. IANA’s delegation record was last updated on 25 March 2026: IANA’s .si delegation data.

A country-code domain signals a connection to a country or territory, but the extension alone does not establish where a website’s owner lives, where a business operates, or what laws apply to it.

Can someone outside Slovenia register a .si domain?
The Register.si general terms define a domain holder as “a natural or legal person who registers a domain name in accordance with these General terms and conditions.” The cited definition and application clause do not state a Slovenia-residency requirement. That supports saying the rules do not require the holder to be a Slovenian resident in those provisions; it is not a guarantee that every applicant or requested name will be accepted.

Registration requests normally go through a domain registrar, which handles the customer’s request with the registry. The current general terms were published and took effect on 15 November 2024. Register.si’s notice says the update involved minor amendments related to ARNES’s founding instruments and personal-data legislation, and that registration conditions were otherwise unchanged: Register.si general terms and conditions and Register.si update notice.
How to get a .si domain
- Choose a registrar. Submit your registration request through a registrar rather than assuming you can register directly with the registry. Check the registrar’s current price, renewal terms and registration requirements before ordering; the registry sources do not establish a universal price.
- Check the exact name. Confirm that it is unregistered and not reserved. Availability alone does not show that a name complies with law or avoids conflicts with another party’s rights.
- Check the format. Under the published terms, names must be 2–63 characters long and use permitted characters. The rules allow the standard Latin alphabet, digits, hyphens and listed characters for internationalized domain names (IDNs). A name cannot begin or end with a hyphen; two hyphens cannot occupy the third and fourth positions unless the sequence is an allowed ACE string used for an IDN.
- Submit the request and follow the registrar’s instructions. The registrar processes the request under the registry’s terms and any applicable requirements. Read the current terms and provide any requested information accurately.

Which .si names are reserved or restricted?
Some names are reserved for specified Slovenian public authorities. Register.si’s terms identify these examples:
- 112.si for Slovenia’s civil-protection and disaster-relief administration.
- 113.si for the police.
- si.si and rs.si for the government.
More broadly, Register.si says names contrary to law, public policy or morals may not be registered or may be deactivated. Relevant legal interests can include official names and national symbols, consumer protection, trademarks, and business or association names. An available name is therefore not automatically a lawful one, and domain registration does not establish that you have permission to use a name or brand: Register.si’s guidance on names contrary to law, public order or morality.

What happens if you change your mind?
Register.si describes a 16-day return window after registration, but it is conditional: the domain must remain inactive and other return-period conditions apply. The registry treats a domain as activated once nameserver records have been submitted to its activation system. This is not an unconditional refund promise. Contact your registrar promptly and check the current terms before relying on the return option: Register.si’s registration and return guidance.

The general terms incorporate .si alternative domain-name dispute-resolution rules (ARDS). Registering a domain does not remove other people’s rights or settle whether a name infringes them. If you are choosing a name that resembles a trademark, business name or another protected identifier, review the applicable rules and seek qualified legal advice where needed. The current terms are available from Register.si.
