In a documented legacy TIDAL interface, an “M” means Master sound quality. It is a historical badge, not proof that a track is currently streaming in MQA: TIDAL says MQA has not been available through its apps or integrations since July 24, 2024. Current playback quality is shown with indicators such as Max, High, and Low, and depends on the track and your settings.
What the M badge meant
An Alpine Electronics device manual for TIDAL operation says, “Content with MASTER sound quality is indicated with ‘M’ on the tile.” That establishes the badge’s meaning in that documented interface: M stood for Master, TIDAL’s legacy label for its highest-quality tier.

The manual is from an older device interface, not a current TIDAL help page. TIDAL’s present support information describes Max, High, and Low quality labels; it does not establish that every current app or connected device still displays an M badge. If you see an M today, its meaning may depend on the specific interface displaying it.
Why M does not mean current MQA playback
Master was closely associated with TIDAL’s former MQA offerings, but the label should not be read as confirmation of MQA playback now. TIDAL says MQA and 360 Reality Audio have been inaccessible through all TIDAL apps and integrations since July 24, 2024. Saved MQA tracks and albums were replaced with the highest-quality FLAC version TIDAL distributes when one was available.

So the useful distinction is: M is a legacy Master badge; the current player’s format indicator tells you what TIDAL is delivering for a particular track and playback session.
How to check the quality TIDAL is playing now
- Start playback and open Now Playing. The displayed quality depends on the setting for that device and the formats available for the track.
- Find the format indicator. On mobile, TIDAL says it appears in a pill below the progress bar. On desktop and web, it appears to the right of the progress bar.
- Tap or select the format label for details. TIDAL says the Now Playing screen can show additional information, including bit depth and sample rate for High.
TIDAL’s published quality descriptions are:
| Indicator | Documented format | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Max | HiRes FLAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz | When HiRes FLAC is unavailable for a track, TIDAL’s documented fallback order is FLAC, then AAC. |
| High | FLAC at 16-bit/44.1 kHz | The label describes the selected quality level; confirm the player’s format details for the track. |
| Low | Compressed AAC up to 320 kbps | This is the compressed option among the three documented levels. |
These are TIDAL’s published format specifications, not a promise that every track is available at the maximum. The selected streaming or download quality and device compatibility also affect what you receive.

M is not the explicit-content marker
The same legacy device manual maps E, not M, to explicit content. TIDAL’s current support page describes controls for allowing or blocking explicit content, while its terms caution that filtering may not prevent every explicit item from appearing. M refers to the legacy sound-quality label; it does not mean “mature” or “explicit.”
