It appears next to the route’s travel time and distance, so you can spot toll roads before you start the trip. The icon does not tell you how many toll booths you will pass or the exact amount you will pay.
Where the circled 1 appears
The symbol shows up in route-planning view, when you have entered a destination and Maps is listing one or more driving routes. Each route card shows the estimated time and distance. If that route uses toll roads, a small circled 1 sits alongside those details. You will not see it on walking, cycling, or transit routes, because tolls apply to driving.

Current coverage of the feature, including a SlashGear report from October 2026, ties it to Google’s 2022 announcement of toll-price estimates. That announcement is the reason Maps can show a price in some cases. Google’s own post was not available for this article, so treat the 2022 date as the date reported by that coverage.

The circled 1 is a route-level signal: this way includes tolls. It is not a count. A route marked with a 1 may pass one toll point or several, and the numeral should not be read as the number of booths or charges.

Whether you also see a dollar figure depends on the route and on whether Google has toll-price data for it. In some cases Maps shows an estimated price. In others it only indicates that tolls apply, with no amount attached. Both cases use the same icon, so the absence of a price does not mean the route is toll-free.
Comparing routes with and without tolls
When Maps offers more than one route, compare three things before you choose:

- Toll status: whether the circled 1 appears and whether a price is shown.
- Estimated travel time: the time difference between the toll and non-toll options.
- Whether a toll-free option exists: sometimes Maps presents a separate route labeled “No Tolls.” Other trips offer no such alternative, even when you ask for one.
If the time saved by a toll road is small, the free route is often the simpler choice. If the difference is large, the toll may be worth paying. The estimate helps with that decision, but it is not a bill.

How to avoid tolls
If you want Maps to route around toll roads, set an avoid-tolls preference. Menu labels change between app versions, so the exact path may differ on your device:

- On the mobile app, open the menu, go to Settings, and look for Navigation or Route options. Turn on the option to avoid tolls.
- On the web version, open directions for your trip and look for the Options control in the route panel. Select the option to avoid tolls.
- Recalculate the route. Confirm that the circled 1 is gone from the route you plan to follow.
Even with the preference on, Maps may not find a toll-free path for every trip, particularly where toll roads are the only practical connection between two places. If the app still shows a toll route, it means no reasonable alternative was found.
Do not confuse it with the blue location circle
A different symbol can cause confusion. The blue dot on the map marks your current position. The light-blue ring around it indicates how precise Maps is about your location: you could be anywhere inside the ring. A smaller ring means Maps is more certain. That ring has nothing to do with tolls, so if you see it near your position, ignore it when reading route cards.

Why toll estimates can differ from what you pay
A toll estimate is Google’s approximation, not a final charge. Coverage of toll prices is not complete, and Google’s public material does not explain how each toll authority bills a specific vehicle, payment account, or trip. Pricing can depend on your vehicle class, how you pay, and any discount programs you use. For an exact figure, check with the toll operator or the account you use to pay tolls in that area.

Because coverage varies by country, region, and app version, do not assume that every route in every place will show a price, or that the same toll behaves identically everywhere.
