What the phrase means in the film
The line works as a promise between two people. Writer-director Januel Mercado describes it as “their promise and their pact,” and says that each time the characters say it, they have to act on it. He compares the attitude to “ride or die.” In practice, the phrase marks a moment when Jo and Raissa agree to face a problem side by side rather than separately.

Why the directors kept a formal-sounding phrase
The phrase was not chosen for everyday street usage. According to the filmmakers’ account in Vogue Philippines’ August 2026 interview, voice actor Liza Soberano, who plays Raissa, noticed that “tayo na” sounded formal to her, while “tara na” sounded more casual. The directors checked the phrase with cultural consultant Kirby Araullo and kept “tayo na” anyway, because its role in this friendship mattered more than its tone.

The film’s premise puts the friendship under strain. Two lifelong friends grow apart and are tested in a mythical world where their memories of each other are at risk, which is why a promise like “tayo na” carries weight in the story.
