It refers to the city’s prominence as a technology and software hub—not to a formally defined district or official rank.
Why Bengaluru is called the Silicon Valley of India
The nickname reflects Bengaluru’s concentration of technology companies and its role in software exports. The Bengaluru Urban district’s history page describes the city as a leading IT exporter, while its industry page connects the sobriquet to the presence of major software companies and software-export revenue. The pages use “Silicon Valley of India” as a descriptive label, not a legal or administrative designation.

Bengaluru’s technology ecosystem extends beyond software firms. The district history page lists organizations such as ISRO, Infosys, Wipro and HAL, alongside research and educational institutions including IISc and IIM Bangalore. These examples illustrate the breadth of the city’s institutional environment; they should not be taken to mean that every organization listed is a software exporter. Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), under India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, says its Bengaluru Software Technology Park was established in 1990, among the first such parks in India. In 1992, STPI launched satellite-based data communications from its Bengaluru center to support software exports. STPI also reports a video-conferencing facility between Washington, DC, and Bengaluru in 1993–94. These milestones provide context for the city’s software-export development, but they do not establish when the nickname began or who first used it. STPI: About STPI-Bengaluru

What the export figure does—and does not—show
The Bengaluru Urban district’s IT services page reports that Karnataka software exports exceeded US$30.41 billion for 2017–18 through September 2017. That is a partial-year, historical figure for the state, not a full-year total or a current estimate for Bengaluru city. It therefore helps explain the state’s software-export significance, but it should not be presented as Bengaluru’s city-level exports today. District Bengaluru Urban: Industry (IT Services)
