In animal-behavior research, “queer” can be a reader-friendly umbrella for the diversity of same-sex courtship, sexual behavior, and partnerships found across species. Scientists generally describe the specific behavior or relationship they observe; those observations do not, by themselves, establish a human-like sexual orientation or identity in an animal.
What does “queer” mean when discussing animals?
Here, “queer” is an accessible framing for variation in animal behavior, not a scientific identity label. Research typically uses specific terms such as same-sex sexual behavior, courtship, or pair bond. Those terms identify what was observed or inferred, rather than assigning a human identity to an animal.

One mammal study defines same-sex sexual behavior as sexual activity or courtship between members of the same sex. It distinguishes that operational category from sexual orientation identity, an overall pattern of attraction or arousal over time, and sexual preference. A recorded interaction can establish that a behavior occurred; it cannot alone establish a lasting pattern of attraction.

Studies may record several different things, and they are not interchangeable:

- Courtship: Displays or interactions associated with mating. A courtship event documents behavior, not necessarily an enduring relationship.
- Mounting or genital contact: Behaviors recorded separately from courtship in the mammal study’s species-level summary.
- Copulation: Sexual interaction, which should be reported as observed rather than treated as proof of identity or long-term preference.
- Pair bonding: A relationship construct inferred from indicators such as sustained proximity or partner-specific behavior. Measures vary by study and taxonomic group.
- Joint care of offspring: A form of shared activity that may be relevant to describing a partnership, but does not by itself define every pair bond.
When comparing accounts, check what was observed, how long it continued, whether the behavior was partner-specific, and whether the record came from a wild or captive setting. A brief interaction and a persistent partnership are different kinds of evidence.
What has been reported in mammals?
A 2023 Nature Communications study reported same-sex sexual behavior in 261 mammal species, about 4% of the species in the authors’ dataset, across 62 families and 12 orders. The 4% figure is a share of species in that dataset, not a share of individual animals or an estimate of how often the behavior occurs in nature.

Within those reported species, the authors recorded mounting and/or genital contact in 87%, courtship in 27%, and pair bonding in 24%. These are proportions of species in the dataset, and categories can overlap; they are not mutually exclusive counts of animals.

That is a published literature count, not a census or a measure of prevalence. The authors caution that many species lack adequate behavioral observations and that uneven research effort can make behavior harder to detect in some groups.

How should same-sex pair bonds be described?
A pair bond is an inferred relationship, not simply any interaction between two animals. Researchers may assess sustained proximity, allopreening, joint vocal displays, cohabitation, or courtship directed toward a particular partner. No single measure applies universally; definitions and evidence differ among species and studies.
A 2025 review describes persistent same-sex pair bonds in birds and calls for more systematic data. It is useful evidence that researchers examine same-sex partnerships as relationships, but it does not establish how frequent such bonds are across birds or what they mean in every species.

Why might same-sex sexual behavior occur?
There is no single established explanation that applies across animals. The mammal study discusses possible social roles, including forming or maintaining bonds and alliances, reconciliation after conflict, communicating social status, and influencing aggression. A 2026 review highlight on nonhuman primates describes possible drivers as complex and context-dependent, with social or environmental stress among factors proposed for study.
These are hypotheses, not universal functions. Evidence about a particular species or context does not establish why the behavior occurs in another. Claims about function should therefore be tied to the relevant study and its setting.

How to read claims about animal “sexuality”
When you encounter a report or headline, distinguish what the evidence actually supports:
- Behavior: What did the animals do—court, mount, make genital contact, copulate, or share a persistent partnership?
- Duration and partner specificity: Was this a single recorded event or a relationship observed over time with a particular partner?
- Sampling: How many settings, years, or animals were observed, and how thoroughly has the species been studied?
- Scope: Is the claim about an individual observation, reports across a species, or a proposed social or evolutionary function?
Careful wording keeps the finding meaningful without claiming more than the evidence shows: describe the documented behavior or bond, and avoid treating one observation as proof of an animal’s identity or enduring preference.
