Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To choose compatible DDR5 RAM, check the exact motherboard model and revision first, then verify its DDR5 slots and memory support list. Next, confirm the exact CPU’s memory limits, match the kit’s part number and module configuration where possible, and follow the board manual’s slot order. A kit’s advertised XMP or EXPO speed may require enabling a profile and is not guaranteed on every CPU, motherboard, BIOS, or DIMM setup.
Start with the exact motherboard and CPU
Compatibility depends on the specific combination, not just the processor family or socket. Write down the full motherboard model and revision and the exact CPU model. If you have a prebuilt desktop, check the system maker’s specifications too: OEM boards may have rules that differ from a retail board with a similar chipset.

Confirm the board uses DDR5 DIMMs
Check the motherboard’s official specifications or manual for DDR5 DIMM support and supported module type. DDR5 and DDR4 modules are physically and electrically different; a DDR5 kit will not work in DDR4 slots. Do not infer the memory generation from the CPU or socket name. For a laptop or compact system, first confirm whether memory is replaceable DIMMs or soldered.

Check the processor’s memory limits
Use the CPU maker’s specification page for the exact processor. Check its supported memory generation, maximum capacity, supported data rates, channel information, and ECC support if relevant. Intel’s guidance explains how to find those limits and recommends consulting the motherboard manual or vendor to verify a particular memory brand and model: Intel processor memory specification guidance.

Use the motherboard memory support list
On the manufacturer’s support page for the exact board and revision, look for Memory Support, QVL (qualified vendor list), or a similar compatibility list. Compare the kit’s exact manufacturer part number, total capacity, number of DIMMs, and—if listed—the CPU family or configuration. MSI recommends using a board’s QVL to check supported speeds, capacities, and DIMM configurations in its motherboard selection guide.
A QVL entry is evidence that the vendor tested that specific combination; it is not a complete catalog of every compatible kit. If a kit is absent, that alone does not prove it will fail. The AMD Ryzen Processor Overclocked Memory Compatibility List is another official resource for listed Ryzen memory combinations and profile indicators.

Choose capacity and module count for your system
First decide how much total memory your workload needs, then check that both the CPU and board support that capacity and DIMM configuration. Compare matched kits rather than assuming unrelated modules will behave as one kit. The board manual specifies which slots to use and what populations it supports; follow it for the exact board rather than relying on a universal slot rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen comparing kits, weigh the following together:
- Capacity: total RAM and capacity per module, within CPU and board limits.
- Module count: whether the board supports that number and arrangement of DIMMs.
- Speed and timings: the kit’s rated data rate and timings against CPU specifications and board-tested configurations.
- Profile: XMP, EXPO, or standard JEDEC operation, and whether the board’s firmware supports the profile you want.
- Physical fit: module height and clearance around the CPU cooler and case.
- Validation and cost: whether the exact part number appears on the board’s list and whether the price suits your needs.
There is no universally best DDR5 speed or capacity without knowing the CPU, motherboard, workload, and budget.

- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Understand what XMP and EXPO change
XMP and EXPO provide memory profiles that can configure settings beyond standard memory operation. Intel describes XMP as a way to load predefined profiles and overclock compatible memory beyond standard settings; see its XMP configuration guidance and XMP product information. AMD describes EXPO as a user-friendly DDR5 memory-overclocking technology for Ryzen processors on Socket AM5: AMD EXPO for Socket AM5.
The advertised XMP or EXPO rate is a profile target, not a blanket guarantee that every CPU, motherboard, BIOS version, and DIMM population will run stably at that rate. Check the CPU’s official support, board documentation, and QVL before treating a profile speed as assured. A kit can use its standard SPD/JEDEC settings without the performance profile; enabling XMP or EXPO is a separate step in UEFI/BIOS.

Install the kit in the board’s specified slots
Use the motherboard manual’s memory installation diagram and slot-population instructions. The preferred slots depend on the board. For example, Gigabyte’s X670 AORUS ELITE AX memory support list gives board-specific guidance for a two-DIMM setup and notes that high-speed EXPO/XMP stability can vary with the CPU and memory modules. Treat that as an example, not a rule for other boards.

Check operation and recover from instability
- Install the DIMMs in the slots specified by the motherboard manual.
- Start the system and check the detected capacity and memory speed in UEFI/BIOS or the operating system.
- If you want the advertised profile, enable XMP or EXPO in UEFI/BIOS, using the board’s instructions. The setting name and location vary by manufacturer.
- If the system fails to train, does not boot reliably, or becomes unstable after enabling the profile, return to default settings. If appropriate, update the BIOS using the board maker’s instructions, then try a lower memory profile or speed.
Do not assume that every processor sample will sustain every kit’s advertised overclock. If you are still choosing, the best confidence comes from matching the exact kit part number and DIMM configuration to the board’s support list, while staying within the CPU and board’s published limits.
