What Does Power over Cable Mean? PoC, PoE and PoDL Explained

Power over Cable is an umbrella term, not a universal standard. Learn how it differs from PoE, PoDL and PoH, and what to verify before choosing equipment.

Power over Cable (PoC) is a broad label for sending electrical power through a cable. It does not name one universal, interoperable standard: in some technical usage, PoC refers to proprietary systems. To know what a particular product can power, you need its cable type, interface, and implementation—not just the words “Power over Cable.”

What is Power over Cable?

The NFPA electrical data summit workshop describes power-over-communications-cable technologies as “a general term for technologies that enable network cables to carry electrical power.” The phrase is useful as an umbrella, but it does not by itself specify voltage, wattage, distance, safety requirements, or compatibility. Those depend on the particular system. NFPA electrical data summit workshop proceedings

That distinction matters when shopping or planning an installation. A product labelled PoC may use a vendor-specific arrangement; it should not be assumed to work with equipment designed for PoE, PoDL, or another named system.

How does PoC differ from PoE, PoDL and PoH?

These names refer to different approaches, interfaces, or standards—not interchangeable names for one set of electrical limits.

Term What it describes What to keep in mind
PoC Power over Cable; in the NFPA workshop’s terminology, PoC systems are non-standardized or proprietary. Check the vendor’s exact cable, equipment, and electrical specification before assuming compatibility. NFPA workshop proceedings
PoE, PoE+, PoE++ Named Ethernet power approaches grouped by the NFPA workshop. A compatible Ethernet source, cable, and powered device are required. NFPA workshop proceedings
UPoE Cisco Universal Power over Ethernet, as named by the NFPA workshop. Do not infer compatibility from the name alone; confirm the equipment specifications. NFPA workshop proceedings
PoDL Power over Data Lines, an IEEE single-pair data-line approach. The IEC TS 63444:2026 catalog listing describes Ethernet-SPE ports as either PoDL-capable or data-only. IEC TS 63444:2026 catalog listing
PoH Power over HDBaseT. The HDBaseT Alliance says its approach is based on IEEE 802.3at with modifications and reports up to 100 W over four Ethernet cable pairs. That figure applies to PoH, not PoC generally. HDBaseT Alliance: Power over HDBaseT

The NFPA workshop also groups PoE-family technologies and PoDL with other power-over-communications-cable approaches. An overview from ATIS’s Protection Engineers Group presents a similar category list in a presentation dated March 24, 2022. ATIS Protection Engineers Group presentation

Can one cable carry both power and data?

Yes, in compatible systems. PoE is the familiar Ethernet example: a network cable can carry both data and power to a powered endpoint. PoDL is a single-pair data-line approach, while the HDBaseT Alliance describes PoH as power over HDBaseT. A label that merely says PoC does not establish whether data also travels on the cable; check the exact product documentation.

  • The Ethernet to USB extension cable is ideal for extending the lengths of a keyboard, mouse, printer, VR base station, telescope data cable, monitoring system, webcam, and other USB peripherals

Why send power through a communications cable?

Using one cable for power and data can avoid a separate power connection and may make installation or device placement more flexible. The NFPA workshop lists potential benefits including easier installation, avoiding AC outlets, and placing equipment where it performs best; it gives IP cameras and wireless hotspots as examples. It also notes that this approach may cost less than installing traditional power wiring. These are possible advantages, not guaranteed savings or outcomes for every project. What should you check before choosing equipment?

Start with the endpoint and work back to the power source. A PoE switch or injector is appropriate only for a compatible Ethernet-powered device; a generic PoC adapter is not automatically equivalent to standards-based PoE.

  1. Identify the device’s input requirements. Find the supported power method or standard in its specifications, along with any stated power class or requirements.
  2. Confirm the cable and interface. Determine whether the installation uses multi-pair Ethernet, single-pair Ethernet, HDBaseT, coax, or a proprietary cable arrangement.
  3. Match the source and receiver. Verify that the switch, injector, or other source supports the endpoint’s implementation and required power. Do not rely on “PoC” alone as proof of compatibility.
  4. Check the installation conditions. Confirm the cable type and length, existing infrastructure, and applicable electrical, fire, and safety requirements for the specific system.
  5. Use the implementation’s stated limits. Obtain voltage, wattage, distance, and compatibility details from the applicable standard or product documentation. There is no universal PoC limit established by the term itself.
