What Does PFD Stand for in Boating—and Is It the Same as a Life Jacket?

PFD stands for personal flotation device. The USCG distinguishes life jackets from buoyancy aids by how they support a wearer in the water.

PFD stands for personal flotation device. In everyday boating conversation, “PFD” and “life jacket” are often used interchangeably. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), however, distinguishes a life jacket that can support a wearer face-up regardless of their condition from a buoyancy aid that depends on the wearer to move or adjust their posture to keep their face clear of the water.

What does PFD stand for?

PFD is short for personal flotation device: a broad term for equipment designed to help keep a person afloat. “Life jacket” is the familiar everyday name for wearable flotation, but the label on a particular device tells you more about its intended use and performance than the generic term does. The USCG explains the distinction in its life-jacket guidance.

Is a PFD the same as a life jacket?

Often, in casual speech—but not always in the more specific terminology used by the USCG. Its distinction is about what the device does in the water:

  • Life jacket: Provides face-up support regardless of the wearer’s physical condition.
  • Buoyancy aid: Provides flotation but relies on the wearer to swim or adjust posture to keep their face clear of the water.

This is a functional distinction, not a simple ranking of products. Check the device’s approval and label, including its use restrictions, rather than relying on the words “PFD” or “life jacket” alone.

What type of life jacket do I need for boating?

Choose a device approved and labeled for the activity and appropriate for the wearer. Design, in-water performance, fit, and upkeep all matter; a type number is not a quality score that can be read without its use information. The USCG describes inherent, inflatable, hybrid, and special-purpose designs, along with performance types or levels.

Match performance and activity

Read the label to see whether the device provides face-up support or requires the wearer to position themselves. Confirm that its listed use covers your activity—such as general boating or paddling—and heed any restrictions. A device intended for one use should not be assumed suitable for every boating condition.

Choose for the person, then check the fit

Use the size information on the label and choose equipment suited to the wearer’s size and swimming ability. Adult equipment is not a substitute for a properly sized child’s device. Fasten it as directed and check that it stays secure. The USCG recommends trying the device in the water to confirm that it keeps the wearer’s airway clear.

Consider whether it will be worn and maintained

A wearable device can only help if the person is wearing it and it fits correctly. The USCG’s guidance puts it simply: “The best USCG Approved lifejacket or buoyancy aid is the one you will wear.” Also consider the upkeep it requires before choosing a model.

What are the U.S. rules for carrying and wearing PFDs?

Federal requirements described here apply to U.S. recreational vessels; they are not a universal rule for every jurisdiction or circumstance. The USCG says a vessel generally needs a Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket in good, serviceable condition and of an appropriate size for each person aboard. Boats greater than 16 feet generally also need an approved throwable device, with a canoe and kayak exception. See the agency’s boating safety FAQ and circulars for the federal overview.

On a vessel underway, children under 13 generally must wear an approved wearable life jacket unless they are below deck or in an enclosed cabin. State requirements can add to or vary these rules, including by age, vessel, or activity. Check the boating authority for your state. The USCG recommends wearing an approved wearable PFD while underway, even where federal rules do not require every person to wear one in every circumstance.

Why wearing a PFD matters

In 2024, 76% of fatal boating-incident victims whose cause of death was known drowned, and 87% of fatal boating-incident victims whose PFD use was known were not wearing one, according to the USCG Boating Safety Division. These percentages describe the reported cases with the stated information available; they are not measures of risk per trip.

How should you inspect and maintain a PFD?

Maintenance depends on the design. The USCG advises inspecting foam-filled devices for wear and buoyancy at least annually. Inflatable devices need the checks and service specified by their manufacturer, including serviceable inflation components. For an inflatable, use only compatible parts for its exact make and model, and follow its instructions.
