When you turn on background capture in Off Grid AI Pro, the vendor describes a screen pipeline: the app takes screen captures, reads the text in them with OCR, and uses an on-device language model to turn that text into observations and entities. Those derived records feed a persistent day journal, a replayable activity history, attention summaries, and a searchable index. The vendor also describes meeting recording and a clipboard history as separate Pro data surfaces. These descriptions come from Off Grid AI’s own materials, and the company has not published an independent audit of how the app behaves.
What the vendor says background capture records
Off Grid AI’s GitHub repository, in its Off Grid AI Pro overview, describes the Pro “Sees” feature as screen capture followed by OCR and on-device language-model distillation. The official desktop product page describes the same flow at a higher level: screen content is read on-device and filed into observations and entities.

The screen pipeline, step by step
- Capture. The feature takes screen captures and is described as multi-monitor aware, so more than one display is covered.
- Frame filtering. Blank or locked frames are skipped, according to the repository.
- Text extraction. OCR reads the text on each retained frame.
- Classification. The described feature classifies activity as consumption or work.
- Distillation. An on-device language model turns the text into observations and entities. Entities are described as people, projects, and companies, each with a generated summary.
The records built from that capture
Background capture does not stop at the screen pipeline. The vendor describes several outputs built from it, and these are the records that persist after the capture step:
- Day journal. A persisted journal organised into time blocks for each day.
- Entities. Generated profiles for people, projects, and companies, each with a summary.
- Replay. A scrubbable, movie-like record of the day that lets you move back through activity.
- Attention reflections. Attention by app and by hour, including what the product calls mind-share and the balance between focus and context switching.
- Unified search. Search that covers screen-derived records, meetings, clipboard content, and memory.
The practical consequence is that a single capture can produce both a short-lived image-processing step and longer-lived derived text. Whether the underlying frames are kept, and for how long, is not stated in the vendor pages reviewed for this article.

Meetings and clipboard are separate data surfaces
Two other Pro features are often assumed to be part of screen capture. The vendor describes them separately, and they should be evaluated on their own terms.

Enabling background screen capture therefore does not, on the vendor’s description, switch on meeting recording or clipboard history. Check each feature’s own settings separately.

What the privacy claims say, and what they do not
The GitHub repository states: “Everything is explicit opt-in, with a visible recording indicator, and nothing leaves the device.” The official desktop page states, in its FAQ: “Capture is opt-in, with a visible indicator.” The desktop page adds that screen content is read on-device and that pixels do not leave the disk.
These are vendor statements. They describe intended design, not measured behaviour. The reviewed pages do not include a third-party audit, a network traffic analysis, or a published data-flow diagram, so they cannot confirm that nothing leaves the machine under every condition, including meeting recording and any update or licence-activation traffic.

Platform availability
- Off Grid AI Pro is listed as currently available on macOS only. The product page says it is not included in Windows builds.
- The FAQ identifies the supported hardware as Apple Silicon Macs, M1 and later.
- Windows and Linux stable builds are listed for the base desktop application. That listing does not establish that background capture is available on those platforms.
How to verify behaviour before relying on it
- Confirm that the app is a Pro build on a supported Mac before expecting any capture features.
- Enable background capture only after you have located its toggle in the app’s settings, and note whether the recording indicator appears.
- Review any system permission prompt the app shows at that point, and grant only what the feature needs.
- Open the day journal and entity views after a short session on a non-sensitive window, and check what text was recorded.
- Look for the controls that the vendor pages leave unspecified: retention settings, exclusions, pause options, and a way to delete journal and entity records. If you cannot find them, treat the feature as unverified for sensitive material.
