Documented military AI is real, but it sits at very different stages. NATO’s Maven Smart System NATO is reported as already used by Allied Command Operations. The U.S. Army’s TITAN program has moved to production. A Marine Corps counter-drone capability is reported as fielded to five installations. Israeli military data tools are described in an IDF statement and in Associated Press reporting. An Australia–UK–U.S. sensing effort was exercised in a 2024 trial. This article covers eight named programs and uses, each tied to a dated source and labeled by stage. It does not present a verified count of 21, because no public source establishes one.
Why this is not a verified list of 21
Lists of military AI “deployments” circulate with a range of totals, and they disagree because they use different definitions. No public source reviewed for this article establishes a complete inventory of exactly 21 deployments. A 2025 NeurIPS proceedings paper includes a table of publicly documented systems and their status categories, but it is a secondary compilation with its own categories, so its entries are not treated here as a verified count.

This article applies one inclusion rule. An entry appears when a dated source names a military user or program, states what stage it has reached, and identifies the AI element. Where the source does not establish the AI element, the entry says so. Trials and demonstrations are kept, but they are labeled as trials and demonstrations rather than counted as deployments.

Stage labels used in this article
- Operational use: the source says a military organization is using the system in operations.
- Fielded: the source says the capability has been delivered to units or installations.
- Production, with units retained: the program has moved to production and units are kept for operational use. This says nothing about how often those units have been used.
- Trial or exercise: the system was tested or exercised under trial conditions.
- Demonstration or integration: work to connect or show a capability that is not yet fielded.
- Experimentation: exploratory activity testing a capability in an operating area.
Three things that are often conflated
- AI software processes data, fuses sensor feeds, or ranks information. MSS NATO’s data integration is an example.
- The platform carrying it is the drone, vehicle, sensor or interceptor. An uncrewed platform is not evidence of AI by itself.
- Conventional automation runs fixed rules without machine learning. Several entries below involve automation whose AI content the sources do not establish.

Intelligence processing and situational awareness
NATO Maven Smart System NATO (MSS NATO)
NATO reported in July 2026 that MSS NATO was already used by Allied Command Operations. According to NATO, the platform brings together data from multiple sources to improve situational awareness, targeting and operational planning. This is the clearest operational-use entry here, but it rests on NATO’s own announcement. It gives no performance figures and does not describe how staff check the outputs.

IDF Gospel (Habsora)
The Israel Defense Forces’ June 2024 statement, titled “The IDF’s Use of Data Technologies in Intelligence Processing,” discusses Gospel, known as Habsora, and says it was first used operationally in 2021. Those are the IDF’s claims. The Associated Press, in reporting from February 2025 that drew on interviews and internal documents, described AI-supported intelligence processing and targeting, and the use of commercial cloud and AI services supplied to the Israeli military. Where the two accounts differ, each is attributed to its author rather than merged.
IDF Lavender
The same IDF statement discusses Lavender, which received media attention, and gives the military’s account of its procedures. The stage of Lavender is not stated in the public accounts cited here. AP’s reporting describes AI-supported targeting in general terms, and the public accounts cited here do not establish how Lavender was used in any particular decision. Treat Lavender as a press-documented tool with disputed details, not as a verified operational capability with a known role.

Sensing and uncrewed systems
AUKUS RAAIT sensing trials
The U.S. Department of Defense reported in 2024 that autonomous and AI-enabled sensing systems were deployed during RAAIT trials in March 2024, with personnel from Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. In one example, a Tactical Assault Kit plug-in supported a UK RedKite UAV in detecting opposing-force locations, and a second UAV supplied imagery for confirmation. Because this was a trial, it shows an exercised capability rather than routine fielding. The report does not describe the operators’ role in acting on the outputs.
NATO Task Force X
NATO Allied Command Transformation says Task Force X began in the Baltic in January 2025 to bring commercially available uncrewed systems into operational environments. Its account, published 23 July 2026, says the first iteration showed ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) delivery, and that participating nations moved into a second phase involving procurement and deployment in the Baltic Sea. Activities in the North Sea, the Arctic and the Central Mediterranean are described as trials, exploration or testing, with differing maturity.

Bart Hollants, Allied Command Transformation Innovation Broker, said: “Proving that industry is able to deliver at speed and scale is only the first step of the Task Force X model. Next, we moved to direct deployment of uncrewed capabilities into real-world conditions, across the European area of responsibility.” That is his description of Task Force X’s transition, not a general statement about military AI.
The entry belongs here as a record of uncrewed deployment. The account does not establish that the systems involved use AI.

Counter-drone interception
Installation-Counter small Unmanned Aircraft System with Anvil and Lattice
The Marine Corps Portfolio Acquisition Executive reports that its Installation-Counter small Unmanned Aircraft System capability has been fielded to five installations. The office describes Anvil as a kinetic defeat drone interceptor controlled through Anduril’s Lattice interface. Anvil is the interceptor; Lattice is the control interface. The release is headlined as a demonstration of a kinetic interceptor capability, and its fielding statement is the office’s own claim. It does not establish that every component uses AI, so this entry is best read as a counter-UAS capability with a software control layer.

U.S. Army TITAN
The Army’s announcement of 1 September 2026, “Army Announces Move to Production for TITAN,” says the program has moved to production and that nine prototype units were retained for operational use. That supports describing those units as available for operational use. It does not establish how often they have been used in specific operations, or how they perform. The announcement does not detail TITAN’s AI functions, so this article attributes no specific AI capability to it.

NATO DIANA 2026 cohort
NATO’s 13 July 2026 announcement names 10 companies selected through DIANA. They are integrating and demonstrating tools in NATO’s cloud-based environment, with demonstration work scheduled to culminate by December 2026. Each selected company receives EUR 100,000. That figure is contractual funding for integration and demonstration; it is not a system price or a performance result. These are development and demonstration activities, not deployments, and they should be kept separate from MSS NATO, which NATO describes as already in use.
Governance that applies to these systems
NATO’s Summary of NATO’s Autonomy Implementation Plan, dated 13 October 2022, lists six Principles of Responsible Use for AI in Defence:
- Lawfulness
- Responsibility and Accountability
- Explainability and Traceability
- Reliability
- Governability
- Bias Mitigation
The summary says these principles apply to AI-enabled autonomous systems and affirms that international humanitarian law continues to apply fully to all weapons systems, including potential lethal autonomous weapons. These are NATO’s framework, not a description of every state’s rules.

It also stresses that many AI applications are dual-use and that innovation is often driven outside the military sector. Those points explain why a named product, contract or trial does not by itself show a mature operational capability.
Quick Recap
What the public record does not show
- Performance: no reliable, broadly comparable statistic was found for how much faster, more accurate or more lethal military AI is than human-only processes. Figures that circulate without a named source and method should not be used.
- Autonomous targeting: none of the eight entries establishes that an AI tool autonomously selects or attacks targets.
