It is a product claim whose meaning depends on which features a vendor calls AI, what the product disables, and what data processing continues. An AI-off setting does not, by itself, mean your data stays on your device, that all machine learning is absent, or that analytics, sync, and telemetry stop.
What can “no AI” mean?
Vendors may use “AI” to mean generative features or large language models (LLMs), rather than every feature that uses machine learning. A product may omit LLMs by default, offer a switch for named AI features, or let you avoid using optional AI while the rest of the service continues to process data.

Waterfox illustrates why the distinction matters: its LLM usage memorandum says, “No LLM features are enabled by default,” while distinguishing general-purpose LLMs from narrower, single-purpose machine-learning functions. Its policy also says users may choose external services through extensions or their own setup. The statement therefore describes the scope and defaults Waterfox defines, not an absence of all machine learning. Waterfox’s LLM Usage Memorandum and Waterfox’s policy and interview material provide the company’s account.
What does an AI-off setting tell you about privacy?
It tells you only what the setting explicitly covers. Turning off a model feature may stop the associated prompt or content from being sent for that feature, but it does not establish that other app data stays local or that unrelated collection ends. Check separately for cloud sync, storage, analytics, crash reports, and telemetry.

DuckDuckGo’s noai search experience is a clearly named feature-level example: its help page says searches work like its regular search except AI features are off and AI-generated images are filtered from results by default. It names Search Assist and Duck.ai among the blocked features. That describes the search experience, not every data practice across all software components. DuckDuckGo’s noai.duckduckgo.com help page also says browser extensions can set that search as the default.
What should you check in a product’s policy?
Read the feature description and privacy terms together. A useful check is to identify the exact control, the data path it affects, and any separate controls for ordinary service operation.

- Definition and scope: Does “AI” refer to LLMs, generative functions, or all machine learning? Which named features are included or excluded?
- Default and control: Is AI absent, off by default, opt-in, or merely avoidable? Can an individual user change it, or does an account owner or administrator decide? Is the choice available on your plan?
- Data flow: What content is sent, when is it sent, and does it go to the software vendor or a third-party provider?
- Training, retention, and deletion: Are inputs or outputs used to train models? How long are they retained, who can access them, and how can they be deleted? A no-training promise does not answer the retention question by itself.
- Other processing: Are telemetry, analytics, sync, cloud storage, and crash reporting governed by separate settings?
- Security evidence: What safeguards and commitments are described, and do they apply to your product tier? Look for the scope of any attestations or contractual terms rather than treating a general policy statement as proof of every deployment.
- What remains usable: Which core functions still work with AI disabled? Can you use an external provider or extension instead?
Why can AI access and telemetry have different controls?
Product settings do not always map neatly onto a single privacy choice. Warp’s privacy page, last updated October 8, 2026, says telemetry may include AI interactions and console inputs when “Help improve Warp” is enabled. It also says telemetry must be enabled to use AI features on the Free plan, while paid plans can opt out and continue using AI. This is a Warp-specific arrangement, not a general rule about software or subscription tiers. Warp’s privacy policy describes its controls.
How should you read data and security promises?
TextExpander’s AI policy, last updated August 26, 2026, describes some AI features running on its infrastructure and others relying on third-party providers. It names Claude and Gemini for in-app conversations and says some AI inputs are transmitted to providers to produce the requested output. The company also states that customer content is not used for model training and describes encryption, access controls, assessments, logging, and user controls. These are the company’s policy statements; they are not an independent verification of every deployment or a guarantee that every risk is eliminated. The policy itself cautions, “Despite these measures, no AI system is completely free of risk.” TextExpander’s AI policy sets out its account.

Can you turn off AI and keep using the rest of the software?
Sometimes. A named mode such as DuckDuckGo’s noai search turns off specified AI features while leaving ordinary search available. Other products may leave LLMs out by default but still permit optional external tools, as Waterfox describes. The important distinction is whether the product has a deliberate, documented AI-free mode or merely lets you avoid particular features. Check what remains functional and whether your account or plan permits the choice.

- Find the vendor’s definition of “AI” and the list of features covered by its claim.
- Confirm the default and locate the setting that disables those features; check whether it is user-controlled or administrator-controlled.
- Trace the feature’s data path: identify what content leaves your device, the recipient, and any third-party provider.
- Read the terms for model training, retention, deletion, access, and security safeguards.
- Inspect telemetry, sync, analytics, and other cloud controls separately, then verify which choices apply to your plan.
If a no-AI claim is material to a privacy or security decision, ask the vendor which specific features and data flows it covers, and check the current policy and account settings. Treat the claim as a starting point for questions, not as a standalone assurance.
