Yes. LibreOffice’s desktop apps can open and save common Word, Excel and PowerPoint files using local file operations, so you don’t need cloud services for the basic workflow. Open the file in Writer, Calc or Impress, then choose File > Save As and select the Microsoft Office format you need. Compatibility is not perfect for every feature, so inspect important files after converting them.
Which Microsoft Office files can LibreOffice handle?
Use the LibreOffice app that matches the type of file:

| Microsoft file | LibreOffice app | Typical save format |
|---|---|---|
Word .doc or .docx |
Writer | .doc or .docx |
Excel .xls or .xlsx |
Calc | .xls or .xlsx |
PowerPoint .ppt, .pps or .pptx |
Impress | .ppt or .pptx |
LibreOffice also documents support for additional formats, including macro-enabled workbooks and presentations such as .xlsm and .pptm, as well as templates. Support differs depending on the application and whether you are opening or saving a particular extension. Check the exact format when working with specialized files.

How to open and save an Office file without a cloud service
- Open the desktop app: use Writer for a Word document, Calc for an Excel workbook or Impress for a PowerPoint presentation.
- Open your file: select File > Open and choose the document stored on your device.
- Choose a format for the next step: use LibreOffice’s OpenDocument formats—ODT for text, ODS for spreadsheets and ODP for presentations—if the file will remain in a LibreOffice workflow. LibreOffice recommends ODF as its default.
- Save a Microsoft Office copy when needed: select File > Save As, then choose the matching format, such as DOCX, XLSX or PPTX, if someone using Microsoft Office needs to edit it. LibreOffice Help also explains how to set a default save format for each document type.
- Use PDF for fixed presentation: if recipients only need to view or distribute the document, LibreOffice’s guide recommends PDF rather than an editable file.
Will the formatting and features stay exactly the same?
Not necessarily. Being able to open a file and save it with an Office extension does not guarantee that every layout detail or feature will behave identically in LibreOffice and Microsoft Office. Microsoft documents possible formatting loss in some OpenDocument workflows, and LibreOffice’s format guidance distinguishes support for opening from support for saving.

Compatibility also changes with software updates. In its 2 October 2026 announcement for LibreOffice 26.8.1, The Document Foundation described around 40 bug fixes focused on Microsoft OOXML files. The listed fixes included DOCX table-of-contents hyperlinks, text alignment and line spacing; XLSX drawing objects and database ranges; and a PPTX issue that could cause Impress to close when opening a presentation. These are examples of fixes, not a guarantee that every document will convert without differences.
- Keep the original file or a backup before converting a complex or important document.
- Open the saved copy in the application where it will be used if exact layout or specialized features matter.
- Pay particular attention to complex formatting, spreadsheet functions, embedded objects and macros.
What should you know about macros?
Microsoft Office and LibreOffice generally use different macro environments: Office uses VBA, while LibreOffice has its own Basic and API environment. LibreOffice can load VBA macro code for viewing or editing and provides settings to preserve or delete that code. Its Help explains that when you change ordinary document content without editing the macros and save back to a Microsoft Office format, the macros may run as before in Office. That does not mean LibreOffice can run the same VBA functionality.

Choose the file extension carefully if a workbook contains VBA. Microsoft’s format reference says .xlsx cannot store VBA macro code or Excel 4.0 macro sheets; .xlsm is the macro-enabled Excel workbook format. Do not save a workbook as .xlsx if its VBA content must be retained. Check the result for the specific file and LibreOffice version.
Which format should you choose?
| Need | Format choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Continue editing in LibreOffice | ODT, ODS or ODP | These are LibreOffice’s native OpenDocument formats, recommended by its guide as the default. |
| Let a Microsoft Office user edit the file | DOCX, XLSX or PPTX | Save a copy in the corresponding Office format for the recipient’s editing workflow. |
| Share a finished document that should not be edited | LibreOffice recommends PDF as a fixed-layout sharing option. |
