Local-first software stores working data on your device so you can keep using core features without relying on a server connection. That can make it a good fit for writing, but the label alone does not mean your drafts stay private: account requirements, sync settings, encryption, AI features and backups all affect what happens to your work.
What local-first means
Local-first software treats your device as a primary place to create and use data, rather than requiring every action to go through a remote service. It may still offer cloud sync or collaboration. The original local-first principles, proposed by Martin Kleppmann, Adam Wiggins, Peter van Hardenberg and Mark McGranaghan, describe goals such as offline use, collaboration, multi-device access, long-term preservation, privacy and user control.

Those principles are useful for evaluating an app, not a certification. Products can meet some goals and make different choices about accounts, syncing, encryption and data access.

Is local-first software safe for writing?
It depends on the app and on what you need to protect. Keeping drafts on your device can reduce routine transmission and let you write offline. It does not protect an unlocked or compromised computer, prevent accidental deletion or give you a second copy if the device is lost.

Sync also changes where your data goes. A provider may be able to read synced content even if it encrypts data in transit and at rest. Those protections are not the same as end-to-end encryption, where the provider does not hold the keys needed to read the content. An app’s AI features can create another data path if they send selected text or document context to an AI provider.
Official product documentation illustrates how different the trade-offs can be. These are vendor descriptions, not independent security audits.

App features and policies can change. Check the current documentation and settings before storing sensitive writing, and decide whether the documented protections match your own threat model.

What to check before writing in an app
- Test offline use and account requirements. Find out whether you can create and edit a document without an account or internet connection. “Works offline” may not mean account-free.
- Inspect sync controls. Check whether sync is automatic, optional or off by default, and whether you can disable it for a particular document or workspace.
- Establish who can read synced content. Look for a clear explanation of whether the provider can access the content, whether encryption is end-to-end, and who controls the keys. Also check what metadata—such as titles, timestamps or device identifiers—may remain visible.
- Check AI data flows. Determine whether an AI tool sends selected text, surrounding context or an entire document; which provider receives it; and whether transmission happens only when you invoke the feature.
- Confirm you can take your writing elsewhere. Prefer exports to readable formats such as Markdown or plain text, rather than relying solely on a proprietary format or converter.
- Plan for device loss and deletion. Find out what backup and recovery options exist, and keep a separate backup of important work. A local copy is still vulnerable to device failure or accidental deletion.
- Look for specific, current security information. Implementation details and independent review, where available, are more informative than a privacy slogan. A vendor’s description is not itself an independent audit.

Compare products along the dimensions that affect your work rather than treating “local-first” as a single privacy rating.

- Sync: Is it enabled automatically? Can you turn it off or limit it to selected workspaces?
- Encryption and key control: What is encrypted, and can the provider read synced content?
- AI transmission: What text leaves the device, where does it go, and what action triggers it?
- Portability: Can you export readable files without a proprietary tool?
- Backups and recovery: Can you restore work if the device or local workspace is lost?
- Security claims: Are the explanations specific and current, and is there independent review?
A sensible choice depends on the sensitivity of the writing and the trade-offs you are willing to accept. For private or high-stakes work, verify the app’s current settings and data-flow documentation rather than relying on its category label.
