What does it take to keep a Home Assistant setup running?

Home Assistant has no software fee, but hardware, compatible devices, optional radios, power and setup time can add up. Here’s how to budget for your own system.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home Assistant software is free, and neither a dedicated hub nor a cloud subscription is mandatory. The less obvious costs come from keeping a computer running, buying compatible devices and any protocol radios they need, and spending time setting up and maintaining a system that grows over time. Those costs vary by household; there is no established universal lifetime total.

Is Home Assistant free?

Yes. Home Assistant says its full software is free, with no subscription required and no features locked behind a paywall. Costs arise from optional hardware, accessories, and hosted services—not a fee to use the core system. The project says Home Assistant “works fully without” its cloud subscription. What are the main costs?

  • A computer that stays on: Use suitable hardware you already own, or buy a dedicated host.
  • Smart devices: Budget for the lights, sensors, switches, locks, thermostats, cameras, or other equipment you want to control. Prices and compatibility vary; there is no comparable device basket that establishes a typical total.
  • Protocol radios or bridges: Buy one only if your chosen devices require it and you do not already have compatible equipment.
  • Electricity: The host runs continuously, so its actual power draw contributes to your bill.
  • Optional cloud service: Pay only if its remote-access, voice, or other hosted features are useful to you.
  • Your time and replacements: Setup, configuration, upkeep, and eventual device replacement are plausible household costs, but typical hours and replacement rates are not established.

Do you need Home Assistant Green or a Raspberry Pi?

No particular computer is required. Home Assistant recommends Green for most people, but also lists a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual machine as reasonable options when you have suitable hardware. Whatever you choose needs to stay on all the time. Home Assistant hardware guidance

Home Assistant Green

Green is a dedicated, ready-to-use host. Home Assistant lists recommended pricing of $199 in the United States and €179 in Europe in 2026; the product page says the USD price excludes taxes, the EUR price includes applicable VAT, and local prices differ. These are recommended regional prices, not a guaranteed checkout price. Home Assistant Green

Hardware you already own

If you have a suitable always-on computer, using it can make the controller’s incremental cost $0. That does not guarantee the lowest overall cost: measure its power use rather than assuming it will use less electricity than Green. A computer’s draw depends on its configuration and workload.

How much electricity does Green use?

Home Assistant specifies approximately 1.7 W at idle and 3 W under load. At a constant 1.7 W for 8,760 hours, the arithmetic is about 14.9 kWh for a year. This is a calculation from the published idle specification, not a measured annual bill; multiply actual kilowatt-hours by your electricity rate to estimate cost. Home Assistant Green

Will you need a Zigbee or Thread radio?

Only if your device plan calls for one and you do not already have compatible equipment. Green can use the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 for Zigbee or Thread, but the accessory is not required for every home or device. Matter devices using Thread need a Thread border router, which you may already have. Home Assistant’s Green documentation says ZBT-2 Thread support is under development, so check current support before buying for a Thread setup. Home Assistant Green

Make a list of the devices you want first, then check their protocol and compatibility. A radio is an avoidable expense if your intended devices do not need it; conversely, a device’s low purchase price may not tell you the whole cost if it requires an additional bridge or radio.

Why can the total be higher than expected?

The hub is only one line in the budget. A system can accumulate devices across rooms, protocol-specific accessories, and replacements over time. Configuration also takes owner time, particularly when adding integrations and building dashboards. These are cost drivers, not a quantified estimate: available official figures do not establish a representative lifetime total, typical annual maintenance hours, or device failure rate.

Home Assistant estimates about 15 minutes for basic Green setup, plus another 30–60 minutes to add initial integrations and a dashboard. A custom installation on a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, or virtual machine is estimated at 1–2 hours. These are setup estimates, not a measure of ongoing annual work. The project publishes a stable release on the first Wednesday of each month and says an automatic backup occurs before each update. Home Assistant FAQ

How to estimate your own budget

  1. Choose the host. Start at $0 incremental cost if you already own suitable always-on hardware; otherwise compare Green’s local price with a self-sourced host.
  2. Inventory intended devices. List each category and check compatibility, protocol, and whether local control matters. Do not treat a device-category price as established without checking actual products.
  3. Add only required radios. Account for a Zigbee or Thread radio or bridge only if your devices need it and you lack compatible equipment.
  4. Decide whether hosted features are worth paying for. Include Cloud/Link only if you want its remote access, voice integrations, or other hosted features.
  5. Estimate electricity from actual draw. Use measured average watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × your price per kWh. Green’s published idle figure is a reference, not every household’s consumption.
  6. Allow for your own time and future changes. Setup and upkeep depend on the system you build; no representative maintenance-hours or replacement-spend figure is established.

The practical comparison is not simply “free software versus paid hub.” Compare upfront host cost, measured idle power, whether you already own the hardware, required radios, intended devices, internet dependence, optional subscription features, and the effort you are willing to spend configuring and maintaining the system.
