When an NHL player is “sent down,” his NHL club has assigned or loaned him from its NHL roster to an American Hockey League (AHL) roster, usually its affiliate. It is a roster move—not, by itself, a release from his contract, a statement about why the team made the move, or an indication of his pay.
What changes when a player is assigned to the AHL?
The player is moved off the NHL club’s roster and onto an AHL roster, where he can play unless the club recalls or moves him again. Teams make assignments in several circumstances: trimming a training-camp roster, opening an NHL roster spot, providing AHL playing time, or responding to changing lineup needs. The transaction alone does not establish which reason applies or mean the team has given up on the player.

For example, Carolina announced on September 30, 2026, that goaltender Cayden Primeau had been placed on waivers for the purpose of reassignment to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. The Islanders’ September 27, 2026, announcement listed assignments to AHL Hamilton separately from Vitek Vanecek’s waiver placement for the purpose of assignment. Those announcements illustrate that waiver placement and the eventual assignment are distinct steps (Carolina announcement; Islanders announcement).
Does a player have to clear waivers first?
Not always. Waivers are a process that may be required before an NHL club can loan a player to the AHL. A waiver-exempt player can generally be assigned without being exposed to a claim. If a player must go through waivers, other NHL clubs may claim him before his current club can assign him. If he is unclaimed, his club may loan him down, subject to the applicable rules.

The Hurricanes’ transaction primer gives a general overview, but a player’s eligibility depends on his circumstances and transaction history. The NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement and its amendments govern; check those rules and the player’s transaction record for a specific case.
Can an AHL player be called back up?
Yes. An NHL club can recall a player from its AHL affiliate, though waiver rules and the kind of recall can affect what the club may do afterward. The Hurricanes’ primer describes a general threshold: after a player clears waivers, the club’s right to send him back down without another waiver process can expire once he has played 10 NHL games or spent 30 days on the active roster. It notes different treatment for emergency recalls. This is a general explanation, not a determination of any individual player’s eligibility; the CBA, waiver history, and recall circumstances matter.

Does being sent down mean a player earns less?
No conclusion about an individual’s salary follows from the assignment alone. A two-way contract sets different salary rates for NHL and AHL play, but not every player assigned to the AHL has one. The player’s contract is what establishes his pay terms. Philadelphia’s March 5, 2026, announcement that Garrett Wilson signed a two-way NHL contract and was placed on waivers for assignment to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms is one example, not a rule for all assignments (Flyers announcement).

Why can’t some young players be assigned to the AHL?
Some players drafted from the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) are subject to an age-based limit on assignment to the AHL. Depending on the player’s age and circumstances, he may need to stay in the NHL or return to junior hockey rather than go to the AHL. The applicable CBA rules and the player’s draft and age details determine the outcome; the rule should not be generalized to every young player. The Flyers’ transaction analysis discusses this issue in the context of one player.
